You would think the gas station/store owners would want self service. Then the customer would have to come in the store and pay. While inside the store they purchase drinks, smoke, chips, etc.

What he said. While I don't think going self-service is as big a danger/inconvenience as people seem to make it out to be (and yes, there are some really stupid things said in that article), the effect it's going to have on gas prices is less than minimal. Self-service is not the answer to the high gasoline prices.

You are right, it is not the answer, but how about allowing people a choice? It is not like full service gas stations are illegal in other parts of the US. They are just rare because most people choose not to use them and save a few cents.

Jersey people are idiots, and its really funny when they don't know how to pump gas (I like in Philly so I've seen it). Plus I love their high and mighty stance on it, like they're too good to do it.

Have you ever BEEN to a NJ turnpike, or AC expressway, gas station?? Or any busy full-service station for that matter. It takes SO GODDAMN LONG because there aren't enough attendents and the attendents are slow. Plus, like the article says, "full service" in Jersey is not REALLY full service....all they do is pump the gas for you.

Yea that's what I always hear Jersey dumb-dumbs say, as they're waiting in line 5x as long as necessary to get their gas.

Obligatory joke::

A woman is driving through Lincoln, Nebraska and decides to stop for gas. Finally after finding a gas station in middle of hay-stacks, she enters the gas station and waits for magic to happen.

The gas station is observeing her all the time. Finally he comes out and says, "Lady, either you must be a widow from Florida or lived your whole life in New Jercy"

Bam.

I live in NJ. This has got to be the dumbest decision made in awhile. I'll take $.05 off every gallon, anyday.

One day when the newspapers were ranting about gas prices, there were two headlines in competing papers. The NJ paper said "Let's Begin Self-Service to Cut Gas Prices". The NY paper said "NY should End Self-Service to Cut Gas Prices". Or words to that effect. The papers were sitting right next to each other at the display.

In other words, nobody knows what the heck they're talking about.

Don't get me started on that.

In Oregon you can buy alcohol in grocery stores, & even hard liquor in a few test stores (they were just starting that when I left, no idea how it turned out).

Freaking PA makes you go to three different stores if you want beer, vodka, and a loaf of bread.

Where abouts in PA do you live?

I moved up to central PA (State College) about a year ago from Texas. I always thought - assumed - that we had some crazy blue laws down in Texas, but they are not anywhere as crazy and simply idiotic as the PA alcohol laws. Much like Oregon, in Texas we could go to the liquor store and get *everything* or we could buy wine and beer in a grocery store (some were allowed to sell twice distilled stuff like Sherry and Port) and also buy at just about every convenience store. Only downside is you can not buy hard liquor on Sunday - beer is okay, though.

Pennsylvania blows.

Could you imagine if people were allowed to pump their own gas? How would they know what to do? What a crazy, untested idea.
My thoughts exactly.

I wonder more how you would find ppl whose job decription is: pump gas. That job surely cant pay more than 1$/hr - even brooming the street seems more interesting

Besides, apart from having to pay for the pumper - gas station without self servace got to have a much lower revenue compared to self service - as ppl do not (need to) enter the shop anymore - which is responsible for the vast majority of the income of a gas station (here in Germany at least)

I don't get it. So they won't pump your gas even if you're old and/or handicapped? I'll keep full serve, thanks.

They would still have the option of full service.

But yes, this whole story is quite ridiculous

As for not knowing how to pump gas, anyone who is licensed to drive a vehicle should have the ability to learn how in 30 seconds. (Or take the Gas Station Attendant Training Seminar.

Just admit that it has devolved into a jobs program

The stupid thing about this is that people should care more about this when gas prices are LOW (when the worker salary represents a larger percentage of the total). When gas prices are high it becomes a (relative) bargain.

I've never pumped gas for a living but I would imagine that a pump attendant pumps several hundred gallons per hour. When they're making minimum wage or thereabouts ($7.05 or something like that in Oregon) that's just a few cents per gallon.

It's definitely a jobs program, but until you've lived it don't knock it - Pumping your own gas is a nuisance.

It's not for everybody, but I would wish I had the option

Is he insinuating that people from NJ are incompetent and stupid? Sounds like it to me.

Wow ... how lazy can we get?!

I don't like the hassle of pumping my own gas? It takes all of 5 minutes!! Too busy stuffing your face with fast food get out and pump your own? Just what we need, MORE laziness. *grumble*grumble*[/rant]

Damn this thread is funny. How about a full service option. Anyone think of that one? Most stations have alot more than just 1 pump. Designate a few pumps as full service lanes for those too stupid/lazy to do it themselves and the rest for those looking to save a few bucks.

What's wrong with keeping the engine on while pumping your gas? I do it all the time. Asian gas stations are always full service and you keep the motor running.
