I live in NJ, and i've grown up with this.

I went to Rhode Island for an interview a few months ago and when I went to fill my gas I was waiting there for a few minutes till I realized nobody was going to come...

Why is it that you can drive over a bridge from NYC and get gas 15 cents cheaper in NJ when full serve?

Me too. Not long ago I was at the gas station and some woman asked me how it worked? I looked at her like WTF what planet are you from? Then she explained she was from NJ and they weren't allowed to pump their own gas. I think I looked at her again like WTF?

Put the nozzle in your mouth, then press down on the trigger. Swallow fast! It comes quick and you wouldn't want to spill any.

Seriously. They make it sound like the entire economy would collapse and the state would fall into the ocean because a few of those high paying gas pumper jobs disappeared.

It is even further ridiculous that you think it might not.

Do you think the service attendents work for free? Where do you think their pay comes from? A surcharge added to every gallon of gas sold.

Since when did these attendants have a union together? Must be that they are demanding higher wages to pump gas which is why gas prices are so damn high.

So now the gas company will make 30.1 billion in profit other than the speculated 30.0 billion. OooOOhh the humanity.

Now if each gas pump had it's own supply and was sealed off from everyone else, I could care less that they blow their asses up. But man, pumping gas next to them pisses and freaks me out. Other than that I think NJ's gas thing is full of doo doo.

Uhhh, what does a cellphone have to do with pumping gas? Yes, I realize that everyone's putting signs up now that say "no using a cell phone" because there is a "risk" of causing a fire, however, there's *NEVER* been a fire caused while filling up gas and using a cell phone.

Furthermore, about smoking cigarettes. Try this: pour gasoline on the ground. Toss a lit cigarette onto the ground. Hmmm... nothing. Okay, get a container of gasoline and drop in a lit cigarette. Wow, the gasoline puts out the cigarette. Interesting. Of course, Hollywood movies need the macho star to start the fire with a lit cigarette, so everyone believes it'll work pretty easily. (warning: Do not use a lighter to light your cigarette while around gasoline )

Do you have any clue on how a business runs? Have you ever been to a gas station that offers both self-service and full-service? Full-service gas is always more expensive than self-service gas. If New Jersey allowed self-service pumps, consumers could choose to pay the lesser amount. It may only be like 10cents/gallong but at least consumers would have that option. That 10cents/gallon (or however much more full-service gas is) is what the station uses to pay for the service attendent. It doesn't go towards the oil company.

Yes I know how these businesses work and I also know how the government works. We have no clue what we are paying for or what service we are getting as everything comes with a hidden subsidy.

Maybe im a realist or maybe just a pesticmist. We are talking about 7 cents a gallon when every station in the united states charges you 20 cents more a gallon on a "forecasted" bad hurricane season. If NJ didn't have enough problems with sky rocketing property tax, traffic, illegal immigrants, and car insurance (which actually is starting to get better), maybe then I can save up enough money from that 7 cents a gallon to buy me a nice big chocolate bar by the end of the week. I guess...just to remind me of how f**ked I am.

If they can't figure out how to pump gasoline, then I wonder how they'd manage having children, either. Seems like a pretty similar procedure overall.

I'm gald this didn't pass. I don't like the idea of getting out of the car and pump the gas myself.

Now imagine being in a rush and having some fat or very slow people in front of you pumping their own gas....

Bam.

You would be suprised. I used to live on the CA / Oregon border *CA side*. Oregon also will not allow people to pump their own gas.

I used to get asked all the time "how do I use this darn thing" by the Oregon drivers *refering to the gas pump*. It boggles the mind.

I would kindly show them how to use it then say " Make sure you have your cell phone off while doing this.. It can cause an FIRE !!"

So you'd like to pump your gas when it's raining or when it's 20 degrees out ?

I am part of the "I will pump my own gas, thank you very much" crowd.

I guess I value being independent higher than others. My reasoning is: If I can do something for myself I will, I don't need nor do I want someone else doing something I can easily do myself. Especially something as trivial as pumping gas.

Perhaps I also enjoy weather too much, as when its 20 degrees out, yea its cold, but if I need gas I'll get it. When I hop back in my car it's nice and toasty, kind of makes me appreciate the heat more. Similar to cooking in the sun at the beach and then jumping into the water (or vice versa).

Lastly, why get gas when there are huge lines? Plan ahead a bit, and know how many days of fuel you have left and just go when there are fewer people.

yes he does. When i was interning in Jersey last year, the first few times i went to get gas i would get out of the car and the attendant would come up to me and look at me like i was crazy. But you've gotta love full-service gas stations in the winter
