I just scored a new job last month. Right now my brother and I are sharing a 2000 Maxima GXE that has ~140k. He works nights and I work 8:30-5. We bought it about 3 years ago with ~110k for $2,600. Only thing we've had to replace on it was brakes and alternator.

By June-July I would like to have my own car. I have 24 mile commute to work which takes a little less than a hour. Looking for advice on what to pick. My priority is gas mileage and reliability, also not TOO pricey parts/repairs.

Right now I'm looking USED years from 2006-2010 for the following models:
Honda Accord/Civic
Hyundai Sonata
Mitsubishi Galant
Nissan Altima/Sentra

Any Advice/Suggestions?

Thanks AT fam.

If you are looking in that range might want to look at an acura tsx too. About splits the difference between the civic and accord size wise and its a bit more fun than either. Used seems to cost about same as the accord. They are super reliable really well built made in japan etc.

The Altimas of that generation had some sludging issues. And CVT failures so its something to be aware of

Where do you work? Can't take CTA?

Ford Fusion.

I work in Orland Park.

Isn't there problems with some of the Fusions transmission? I'd rather stay away from Ford, my first car was a '93 SHO.. Smh.

I'll be letting my bro have the Maxima. At the moment I'm leaning towards the Galant since theyre so cheap and seem to last.

If you're already into the 10k+ range I'd get a little more together and grab a new base model Honda fit auto or manual a little cheaper. Will hold it's value and will last forever. No used car issues, high resale assures least loss when ready to sell, and unlikely to have many repairs during it's life.

Currently I get cheap cash cars and deal with issues as they come. I enjoy a little work with my hands and enjoy using all the fancy tools I've bought so not a big deal. When I get where I want to be financially I'll just buy new small cars and get rid of them at about 100k.

Just lease a new economy car using one of the $99-159 deals that are in the paper every week.
