I just got a LG L1720P 17in LCD and love it so far. Im running it off my Radeon 9800Pro on the analog out connection. I fired up Doom 3 for the first time days after getting the monitor. I immediately noticed white speckles all over the screen where its dark in the game. My questions are these:
1. Should I have hooked up the monitor over the digital interface? Would that help if this is a "noise" issue?
2. I set Doom3 to run at 1280 x 1024 (same as my desktop) which is the native resolution for this monitor, is that correct way to do it?

Thanks for any help.

Did this happen on your old monitor, assuming you have one? Sounds more like a video card issue than the monitor.

Oh, and for the love of all things holy, if you have the capability to use the DVI port, do it.

Yes I do have DVI out on my Radeon, and my panel supports it. I guess I should be using it, I wasnt sure if I should with games. Im not sure about the old monitor, I never suffered this before, but I never ran Doom 3 on the old monitor 17in CRT. Thanks.

What he said.

My Radeon 9800Pro has been fine with my LG L1710B ever since they met. Been happily married via the DVI port since they connected.

I hooked up now via the DVI port and everything seems fine, I dont notice much of a difference. However, the speckles in Doom3 are still there. I found on Activisions web site that they suggest to try setting my Radeon down to 4x instead of 8X via the SmartGart tab in control panel. I did, and the speckles went away. I set it back to 8x to confirm that the speckles came back but they didnt. Now Im set up just as before (accept using DVI) and everything seems to be fine. Thanks for the help. Am i correct to run my desktop and games at the native resolution of the LCD? Thanks everyone.

Glad to have the issue solved even if our suggestions didnt make that much difference.

Using the LCD's native resolution is best for picture quality however Id say its another subjective thing where if you are happy with 1024x768 or 800x600 then dont let anyone stop you

Turnes out my speckles came back and wont go away without disableing 8x on my AGP port.
I found a new bios for my mobo that came out recently. I updated it and reset my ESCD to resolve an issue with my HDD and bootup. However a side effect is that the speckles in Doom 3 are gone even when set at 8x. Everything working good now. Thanks.
