You're in denial. How about I BLOW IT UP FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-Series
LS
IS

roofline.jpg

The design of the LS's doors/rear quarter windows match the IS, not the 5-Series.

5-Series
GS

roofline2.jpg

GS windows/doors match the 5-Series.

GS windows/doors match the 5-Series.

the big fat lack of rear deck on the GS makes it totally different from the 5 series. the slope of the LS's rear glass and the width of the C pillar are in proportion with the 5 series. the amount of wrap around of the rear lights and their geometry and light pattern matches on the 5 series and the LS. the relative length of the hood and the position of the A pillar in relation to the front wheels matches on the LS and the series.

And what you are failing to realize is that while you are saying that all of these design patterns match up with the 5-Series, the very same items that you point out (taillight design/shape) showed up on the ES in 2001 and the overall shape of the vehicle is very similar in proportion to the IS.

It seems that people get caught up on the side profile shot of the LS and look at the triangular shape of the taillamps and instantly say 5-Series, when in fact that triangluar shaped light has been around for a while on the ES and the rooflines of the 5-Series and LS look nothing alike (as I showed up above with the cross section of their windows/doors).

It's like someone seeing a twin kidney grill on a Pontiac and saying "BMW ripoff." HELLO, Pontiac has had that theme for years.

NFS4: that "groove" in in rear windows has a name. It's called the Hoffmeister Kink, and it's a BMW invention.

The progenitor of the E9 CS coupes was the 1965 2000C. The designer, Wilhelm Hoffmeister, is credited with first penning the little forward wedge at the base of the C-pillar that has become a BMW design hallmark known as the "Hoffmeister kink." Apparently, it only seemed kinky the first time, because the same styling cue has not only adorned nearly every BMW since but also many a would-be Bimmer from other manufacturers.

I know what it's called. I just didn't know how to spell it

But what Lexus has done with the IS and LS is not the same as on the 5 or 7. Just look at the curvature of the rear doors around the rear quarter window:

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/NFS4/roofline.jpg

Now one cannot credibly say that the two are the same.

That kink is more prone to show up on BMW coupes, not sedans. I personally think it creates a larger blind spot in the C-pillar, which BMW has tried to minimalize with E60.

The new LS looks nicer than the new 7-series as far as I am concerned, but I have to give it to BMW...at least their designs spark controversy and aren't boring. It's funny how Lexus is now going to the "same sausage, three different sizes" philosophy that BMW invented and has now gone away from.

I studied those pics and I think NFS4 has got the better argument.

In all honesty tho...I wish I saw some more flare...some more defining shapes. They all got that same feel...bulky rear-end kinda thing.

the ES tailights don't look anything near the same. they're an amorphous blob like the camoflouge of a flounder. the LS and 5 series tailights are almost exactly the same from the side. the ES also has the clear part at the bottom, whereas both the LS and the 5 have the clear part at the top.

the only thing that you showed with that cross section (in which you left out the bimmer) is that you're severly lacking in geometric cognizance.

and the 5 and GS do not share the same butt. the 4 is trim and athletic, while the GS has some huge ghetto booty that looks like it's about to lurch forward and flatten the driver.

none of them are the same! the only thing you've really tried to claim is the same as on previous lexii you've just showed isn't the same at all!

No two cars are going to be the same. But the styling trend of the rear door/roofline sweep on the LS is closely related to the IS.

If you can't see that, then you're flippin' blind. Can you not see the sweep of the rear door on the LS and IS or are you covering one of your eyes with your palm?

I already acknowledged the fact that the LS lights look like the 5er lights. But you cannot use that point to say that the whole car looks like a 5er.

My point was that the basic shape of the lights is the same as it is on the ES including their positioning. The placement of the white reflector in the taillight is of secondary concern. Top, bottom, who cares? So it happens to be at the top? So that means the whole car is a rip of the 5'er?

So what do we have? Taillights look the same from the side...OK.

Side profile/roofline/windows? Nope.
Front lights/bumper? Nope
Trunk lid? Nope. The 5'er has a cutline going from the tail lights up the bangle trunk up to the rear window.

So what are you clinging to? Taillights?

the tailights don't look anything at all the same on the LS and the ES. the ES looks like a fish. the LS looks like a machine. the ES looks like an acid trip. the LS looks geometric.

i'm clinging to the proportions of the car, which if you were to measure it against the 5 series, is probably accurate to 98-99%. the side profile is the same. you do know what a profile is, don't you? it's the same athletic look.

and the windows do look quite a bit like the 5, what with the bmw kink at the base of the C pillar, which isn't the same as the guppy curve on the ES.

I'm a big lexus fan, but that does like a bmw from the back and a chrysler or something from the front

If we used a black on white silhouette to showcase proportions/side profile to determine if a car is a rip, 75% of the cars out there would be the "same." That's why I have been focusing on the DETAILS.

Instead of making any tangible comparisons, you make comments like guppy, acid trip, guppy curve, flunder, etc. and generic references to the profile or proportion of the hood to the alignment with the moon at midnight.

the details aren't what give me the overall impression. the overall impression is to sit back and look at the car as a whole, and that just screams 5 series to me, and apparently to a lot of other people. if you're going to go detail by detail, i'm sure there is a lot of minor bits out there that aren't the same on the LS as either the ES or 5 series. but the sum of the parts is that it looks like a 5 series to me.
