What the heck just happened? Ahsoka Ep05 is the best episode so far. This is the Star Wars we know and love. How do they come up with this masterpiece after four previous not-that-great ones? Disney is annoyingly unpredictable and inconsistent.

Wandering Earth 2: 8/10

Watched it on a plane ride using subtitles.

This a Chinese movie, and the prequel to Wandering Earth.
It made $600M worldwide and is currently #8 for 2023's top grossing films.
(Barbie is #1 at $1.4B???)

As the Sun becomes an expanding red giant and threatens to engulf the Earth in 100 years, the United Nations, now renamed as the United Earth Government (UEG), decides to proceed with the Moving Mountain Project, a proposal of building ten thousand gigantic nuclear fusion engines that can propel the Earth out of the Solar System towards another habitable star system.

Glad i didnt watch the first one (heck, i didnt even know this was a prequel) else I wouldnt have been filled with all that suspense.

Hey, Star Wars people. Do I need to watch anything before checking out Ahsoka?

- No but the show does launch directly from where the Cartoon "Rebels" ended. Rebels is definitely a tougher watch since it was squarely targeted toward tweens and younger audiences (i couldn't do it) , so it might make sense to find a recap video on youtube somewhere and just go from there.

Watched Band of Brothers for the third time on NETFLIX. Figured it was worth watching again since much of the Russo-Ukrainian war is fought under WWII like conditions. Still rates a 10/10.

Oh rebels wasn't SO bad. I mean a big chunk of it was indoctrination but that's cool. Kids need to be properly socialized.

I've watched maybe 2 and half seasons of Rebels. I forgot what happened in it since it was so long ago. So no, doesn't matter if you go into Ahsoka totally cold. The first three episodes, maybe sip coffee in your bid to stay awake and attentive. Then the story picks up really well and you will be hooked.

I'm halfway thru a rewatch of Endgame. It's really quite good. A bit intricate and timey wimey as the Doctor would say, really excellent.

Went last night to see 'A Haunting in Venice'. I'll give this a 7.8/10. But you probably won't.

Personally I loved it. It is made like an old film. This is made more in the style of an old Vincent Price movie then a modern movie. It takes it's time and lets the dialog develop, and make no mistake this is a movie that is propelled by the dialog. No snappy back and forth dialog here. This is the slow theater like back and forth with plenty of dramatic statements with the appropriate camera movement to accentuate it.
The movie is heavy on the atmosphere. The setting is practically a character, and is given opportunity to have it's own scenes.

As for the story. Well, it is a Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot story, you know the detective from 'Murder on the Orient Express' and 'Death on the Nile'. Either you love him or you don't. I personally think that Kenneth Branagh's version of him is perfectly acceptable. The story is pretty much on course for Agatha Christie. She was a good mystery writer in her time, but her plots and characters has been reiterated so often that you probably won't find her story all that creative anymore, but it is worth remembering that they were considered so when she was writing them.

The Irrational - S01E01 10/10

This has one of the detectives from the original L&O. Jesse something maybe? Too lazy to look it up.

This actually a very educational show. Tonight I learned about false memories, the cocktail party effect, the reciprocity effect. I'm probably forgetting one.

For a lot of you, this might just be common sense. And even for me it is to some degree. Categorizing behaviors can be extremely useful since we don't normally think of them in a way that involves language - directly.

i watched again Babylon, the 2022 film with Margot Robbie.
now, the director here is the same guy who wrote & directed Whiplash (9/10), but i really have a problem with how LOUD this film is. I mean this both figuratively, as it is loud stylistically, oversaturated with visuals, and too too fast - despite the 3 goddamn hours of runtime - but also literally loud, as the soundtrack is excessively loud, relentlessly.
i wasnt too fond of the protagonist Diego, and while Margot is a stellar actress, her character isnt particularly deep.
Pitt on the other hand is magnificent as a Marlon Brando who has lost the spotlight. I just wish the film was a little more ... careful .. on how it tells these 4 stories (including jazz trumpet guy).

i would recommend this mostly for the brad pitt scenes, with the caveat that the film will be very often too much.

6.5/10
