having endured an absolutely awful flight from Bogota to London, plus various assorted delays, i am finally home and have watched

Batman : The Doom That Came To Sarnath Gotham - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt24223450/reference/

despite this being a 1-hour long cartoon, and PG-13, i found it absolutely excellent. Uber-stronk Cthuloid vibes without aaaaalways descending in the same fucking tropes. Would recommend.
7.5/10 - good for both Batman fans and Cthulhu fans.

The Irrational, Ep 3 - The Barnum effect 10/10

I wasn't going annoy everyone by posting about every episode, but this was quite good and not at all obvious, at least not to me. Strong focus on psychology again, so that was very good too.

Money Heist (Spanish) - S01-02 are stellar 10/10

This isn't much of a spoiler so I'm not going to bracket it, but S02, not surprisingly, ends with a bit of a cliff hanger one might say.

I've been meaning to pick up the following seasons (S03 and 04 so far) so I can't comment on those. I don't even know if the show is still being produced.

What I can say is that at least at the beginning of season 3 take a different approach and start jumping around in time. That's not necessarily bad, but I consider it a warning sign.

Colombiana - 6.5/10

Decent entertaining flick from 2011. Nothing new here as far as the story. Young girl in Columbia witnesses her parents' murder through involvement in the drug trade. She grows up with a mission for revenge. Develops quite a skillset for the job.

The first murder we see her commit was a very cool plan where her victim is in a Chicago police precinct. All part of a plan to draw out her prey. Worth watching if you like sexy hitwoman kind of stuff.

I really liked that one but didn't follow up after most of the first season. Unusual to draw out that kind of story.

There is an Israeli series, a drama called Fauda I reviewed about two years ago on here. Filmed on location and very well done, from an Israeli perspective of course. Might go back and re-watch it.

funny you should say that, I DO like sexy hitwommen' kinda stuff.
Haha, I really love that sort of thing myself and Columbiana has to be one of my faves - even over Black Widow and I love SJ.

BTW, the first imported Nikita movie (French, La Femme Nikita, 1990 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Femme_Nikita_(film)) was pretty good from what I remember.
I suppose you have seen this? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7456310/reference/

I found it pretty amazing when I saw it at the time. Dunno how I will feel about it now.
Anna 2019

I vaguely remember seeing that. Might have to check it out at some point once I get thru the current stack of things I haven't watched yet. I really need therapy for my cable news habit/addiction. But then again, you sorta need to be informed these days I suppose.

Very refreshing movie. Benecio Del Toro was great, as always. The real surprise was Alicia Silverstone. She plays a super supportive wife who is not totally defenseless when she is alone. A slow burning movie that will keep you guessing. Unique directorial style too.

Judas and the Black Messiah

Excellent movie. Draws you in. Not really any wasted screen time at all.

Especially sad considering a huge chunk of MAGA would easily go back to those times if they could.

John Wick 4 (2023)

IMO the franchise has continued its autorectal exploration with silly names for absurd roles within the criminal community and with the amount of Latin/pseudolatin being dropped I felt like it was going to cross over into the Warhammer franchise at any moment. Also the priestly garb was a little weird.

Thankfully the second half of the film got to the fucking point and made it more about old-fashioned motives like revenge and loyalty.

IMO the makers of this franchise should have watched M (1931) as well as a few good mob movies beforehand, because if you're going to go global with the plot (or at least spanning many criminal organisations), you can't treat 99% of the characters like unnamed bots who simply cease existence except during their moment with the main character. It's like almost no-one in any of the criminal communities in this franchise have any ambitions/plans of their own, let alone running contrary to the whims of the "high table". Maybe you can't make an pure action revenge flick while also giving so many soon-to-be-dead people some kind of personality. But without any personality, what's the point? Overall I think the lesson here is not to make action flicks with plots that span multiple films, it just doesn't work. For example, the Matrix trilogy.

The action got boring after a while. I almost fast-forwarded.

I finally got around to watching The Dark Tower.

As a standalone movie, one of the worst I've ever seen. It wasn't as bad as Observe and Report but it was close. Idris Elba is usually at least serviceable in his roles, this is perhaps his worst performance ever. Matt Mac was terrible. The kid was awful. The plot was nonsensical. 2/10

As a "Dark Tower" movie it was abysmal. It had a 'Dark tower' and there was a character named Roland but that's about it. I just finished reading all 8 books in the series and had avoided the movie just in case there were spoilers; I wasn't sure if they were trying to cram the entire story into one movie or what. I needn't have worried. Just the worst. I'm trying to think if I've ever seen a worse film adaptation and I'm coming up blank. Even the third book of the Divergent series, which was split into two movies and the second one never got made because the first was so bad, couldn't hold a candle to this turd. 0/10

Dennis Quaid and Heather Graham take you on a wild ride through the skies, with sleep inducing acting and scenes that will cause your hair to fall out from the incessant scratching (police car chases kids on bikes around an airfield, unable to catch them). One of the BEST Christian movies ever!

i watched the absolutely fantastic The Burial - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5648882/reference/

Dialogue-heavy courtroom procedural with frills, Tommy lee Jones is a elderly funeral-home business owner who enters into an agreement with a large canadian company in the same line of work; when the big canadian company decides to stiff him, he hires flashy TV attorney Jamie Foxx, in absolutely top form never seen before.
Now, Jamie is a "Black" Lawyer; he purposely chooses predominantly black communities to file his suits in, and he knowingly exploits his blackness. He's smug and arrogant about having found this magical key to victory that made him not lose a single case in 12 years. Evil canadian company puts him against equally-black lawyeress Journee Smollett, who instead throws the race card back in his face. The film skirts between the manipulation of race politics and being a straight "against the man" courtroom drama, with Jones being the honest man fighting the nameless corporation, with tinges of Erin Brockovitch.
This film will make you see Jamie Foxx in a completely different light.

No Country for Old Men - 8/10. Very interesting movie. Very good acting and pacing, IMHO. Some really well done intense scenes also some very well done banal ones. I'd give it a 9, but the ending is unsatisfying (which may be the point, still).

i watched the new Rick & Morty Season 7 Ep1, which is after they fired the fucking creator of the show for unproven sexual misconduct allegations.

.. aaaand it was allright. It's a good IP and it's difficult to fuck it up. Wasn't great, but not completely fucked.

It was far more than just that. The guy had been half-assing it for years. His legal troubles were simply a good excuse to cut ties.
