Amsterdam (2022) -

Oh god this was so boring. Imagine having Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock, Robert DeNiro, even Mike Mayers and Taylor Swift!! and still producing this pile of shit. You also get Rami Malek, Colleen Camp, John (the son of Denzel) Washington.
Set in 1933 Amsterdam, it's a sort-of spy thriller who does not understand what makes a good thriller. Or even just a thriller.
The dialogue is near-nonsensical, constantly veering into irrelevant conversation that covers what little plot-necessary content is there. I need to stress how frustrating is trying to follow this film, it's tons of characters constantly talking about the mundane, leaving YOU the job of trying to distill what part of the vomit of words you have just heard is actually important for the story. The dialogue is almost violently self-indulgent, lots and lots and lots of redolent, flowerful phrases that contribute *nothing* to the progress of the film. It's two full hours long and barely anything happens.
It's .. allegedly, vaguely inspired by the
Business Plot, but there is no mysterious discovery or evil villain to serve as a anything resembling a proper film antagonist - until nearly 1:50, the film "heroes" don't even know who they are fighting against.
The 3 (!) protagonists are friends who know one another from WW1. With Bale being a doctor, he is asked to perform an autopsy, which leads them to discover a rich man was poisoned. Shadowy forces attempt to silence the protagonist, and you'd say "aha DigDog, there's the plot!" but the shadowy forces are hardly in the film; like good IRL spies, they don't constantly stick around to see what's happening. The protagonists pretty much stumble around aimlessly, until they finally .. and i mean FINALLY, near the closing act of the film, meet a General, and they guy says oh yeah, yes i did get asked to read this speech against Roosevelt, but now that you've brought to my attention that fact that the guys
you do not see in this film may have killed the rich guy, then i won't. And that's .. the film. The shadowy plot *exists*, but IS NOT IN THE FILM. The heroes are like, we've discovered this plot, that is taking place somewhere else !!
This was awful. I was yelling at the screen "what is this" and "what am i watching" most of the time. There is so much bad in this film i could probably build a youtube career out of ripping it apart.
My vote:
4/10 - it's shit.
