i disagree. He only did American History X - which is awesome. The Prestige was bad, and i haven't seen The Remake Of The Italian Job, but he's got a minor part in whichever Bourne film he was in, Death To Smoochy is such a minor film i have never heard about it until you mentioned it, and Rounders is a Matt Damon film which totally eclipses him. Was he even in Birdman ?

By the way, his film The Score is one of the very few films i have ever walked out of. The 25Th Hour had raving reviews, but since then he hasn't had a single lead. I mean, he was even in The Budapest Hotel, but nothing that spotlights his ability as an actor.
Death to Smoochy is a cult classic. Also, sure Damon was the star of Rounders but Norton had a big role. The Italian Job was a fair bit of lighthearted fun. Norton was in the Illusionist, which came out around the time of The Prestige.

Like I said not nearly enough bangers in his career at all, it's a bit strange, but he has a few good ones sprinkled in there.

Not strange if you have seen the extra features for his Hulk movie. He WANTS creative control over the movies he stars in, which can be a strain on the studio and especially the director. Most of them prefer actors who do what they are told, not the actor telling them how they should do their job.

RoboCop - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093870/reference/

I had to rewatch this after many, many years because i've been noticing on the YouTube reviewers circle that it's got a far better reputation than i'd give it.
And yeah, it does have some nice touches, the direction / camera has got some interesting tricks, but i still think this is a cheapo film for very simple-minded audiences. I mean, nothing wrong with that, given that RoboCop exists in the same time period where the A-Team would dump mags into people and not a single person dies, so i too would have loved ED209 exploding more blood squibs than anyone would think reasonable, or the guy who gets covered in acid getting subsequently liquidized by the car smashing into him.

But then, you gotta accept when i say that this film is on-par with Street Trash, or maybe Brain Damage. It's the same kind of script tricks for the same kind of target audience.

My vote: 7/10 - i'd rather have Predator than this.

Just wrapped up the season 3 of Hacks on HBO Max. Just a great show. Great cast and the chemistry between Deborah and Ava is on fire. This show has a little bit of everything from drama to humor to tackling all sorts of personal and sexual and sociopolitical topics, all within a natural flow. Looking forward to season 4.

apparently, it's not done yet.

Anger Management (the 2003 film, not the far-superior tv show with "Tiger Blood" Sheen) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0305224/reference/

Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson who, at this stage, will take any role.

Sandler is a meek office guy who everyone abuses. One day he is on a flight and through some weird misunderstanding - and exaggeration on part of the others involved - gets him kicked off as a rowdy passenger; he winds up in court and is assigned to an anger management class taught by Nicholson. This keeps repeating, with the anger management class only leading to Sandler being more and more inculpated as a violent person, until he's facing jail. Nicholson is revealed to be more and more insane.

Aah ha ha.

Except it's THE SAME JOKE for an hour and a half. Nicholson: "Sandler don't be angry". Sandler: "ok i will not be angry". Nicholson: *proceeds to start a riot with someone else and get Sandler blamed for it*.
This happens like, 12 times in a row. It's the same fucking joke over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

Once the film is finally over they have a 5-minute ending where everything is revealed to be a big hoax and everyone lives happily ever after.

5/10 - dont be fooled by Marisa Tomei, she's in it for a few minutes only and has barely any lines.

From the featured review:

plus i also find hiragii really relatable, i too am a guy who cares alot about helping people even if i dont know them, me and him also basically look the same so it felt like i was in the movie wich made it even more immersive for me, the animation is also crazy good, some of the best i have seen in 2024 so far

so overall i really reccomend this movie, dont listen to the hate comments, its worth it.

Explains my score of 7.5/10

New York, I Love You - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808399/reference/

Film made up of multiple independent segments all telling short stories about living life & love in NYC; some about hooking up, some about being lonely, some about finding meaning and some about losing it. Starring *EVERYONE*, it was decent, mostly because the stories are short and the content concentrated, but obviously there is no central story to even try to summarize.

6/10 - decent if this is what you're looking for.

I watched Grave of the Fireflies for the first time. Probably 8.5/10. There might be something wrong with me because I didn't really feel sad or anything.

I can relate. I don't have a soul either. I went to see the Queen movie with some people (Rami Malik version) and everyone was so moved. I was like, meh, good music.

El Cid - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054847/reference/

3-hour long starring Charlton Heston, and Sofia Loren as the wife. Having watched the excellent Julius Caesar, i was hoping for something similar, but instead it's a excedingly long slog of poorly costumed medieval dudes riding horses and bad fight scenes. Think the word "Epic" but everything bad associated with that word; every scene is too long, every fight is a farce, the music is overbearing, every line is delivered too slow, the screen is awash with extras, all to tell a simple and unrealistic story of this medieval knight, "El Cid", who wins every battle, but also needs to be shown as struggling through every battle, but then again needs to be shown as always winning. It kinda defeats the purpose if we have this unkillable hero but you need to show me fake tension where he's supposedly at risk.

Loren is wooden as the wife, and the slow and badly theatrical delivery of everyone's lines just makes her even worse. With the content the film has, this could have easily been shrunk to 1 1/2 hours, as there isn't much happening and not much of that is interesting.

El Cid is a knight at the court of Castille, one of the fragmented counties of Spain during the moor invasion of 1050. At the start of the film he saves 2 important moor generals from death, on a promise of peace, which causes him to be labelled a traitor. He has to fight his accuser because that's the way people determined who was guilty or not in those days, killing him, however this dude is the father of Sofia Loren, which pisses her off, despite the fact that she was about to marry him. El Cid needs to then do stuff to make Sofia love him again; he fights a bunch of moors, but also befriends another bunch of moors. Eventually he gets too involved with the moors, and because of this he is expelled from Spain. Obviously the dude goes to fight for the moors, and then there is a really big & famous battle.
This is the epic ending where El Cid is killed, but Sofia has his body rigged to a horse so it looks as if he's alive, come back from the dead. This really poorly shot scene is the climax, the sight of a resurrected Cid throws the moor army in a panic and Spain is saved. And we didn't need 3 hours to get here.

I wouldn't recommend this. The fighting is poor, the costumes are meh, the acting is really fake, and there's no concept of pacing.

i'd give it a 6/10 considering the historical importance of the film at the time, and maybe to show that even with Charlton Heston you aren't necessarily gonna have a good film. If you're going into this with a modern mind for some sword-fighting entertainment, 5/10.

Dune 2 - 8/10.

John Adams - 7.5/10 Great period piece and acting.

Wonka - 7/10 It did a surprisingly good job of filling in the backstory on the Gene Wilder version of Wonka.

Crank - 6.5/10 I saw this BITD when it came out. Forgot all about it. Still a good popcorn flick. Needed more over the top Statham hand to hand fighting.

Trespass against Us - 5/10 Meh. Good cast, poor script.

Road House remake - 1/10 Garbage. Hot stinky garbage in the Florida Keys sun. The OG is hilariously bad to the point it's good. I remember my son walking in on me watching it when he was maybe 13. It was Pat hitting the tiny improvised duffle bag/heavy bag in the barn scene. My son stands there for a few seconds watching and says - "I hit harder than that." I said while laughing - yes son, you do.

She's pretty decent in "She came to me".
She Came To Me - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6689014/reference/

Very "serious" film starring Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei and Anne Hathaway.

There's two main plots, supposedly entwined, but one much more interesting than the other.

Plot 1. Dinklage is a composer of modern operas; he is married to psychologist Hathaway, who is, well, hot, but is not exactly a "giving" wife.
He's also suffering from writer's block, and one day in his miserable life he just pops into a bar in the morning to see if whisky can help.

He meets Marisa, who is just in a chatty mood, nothing else. She's a tugboat captain, quirky girl. She shows him the boat, she shows him the deck, the helm and the bedroom. And then she shows him her tits.

Turns out that Marisa has a bit of a stalker personality. Nothing serious though.

Dinklage finds inspiration in this and writes a good opera that makes good money. He is Saved(tm).

Plot 2. there's the kid of Hathaway and another kid and they are bf/gf. The girl has a asshole father who wants to get the kid thrown in jail because he is asshole.
Dinklage and Tomei "kidnap" them and since she's a boat captain, she can get ordained, and marries the two kids, no more statutory rape charge, everyone happy.

The dialogue is good, the plot is decent, the acting is obviously very good, i mean fuck, Tomei / Dinklage / Hathaway you really can't do much better than than, the film is .. okay. The script is not terribly relatable, or otherwise very interesting. I mean, it's a story that makes sense, but the style is of a romantic comedy with a tinge of sadness. And i'm not really sure who, aside from the arrogant film critic, is the target audience. I need either more of a cinderella romantic fable, or a punch in the gut (but no Million Dollar Baby, please).

Idk, i'd rather recommend one of the other good films i have watched this year; if you are in the mood of watching one of these actors being really good at their actor-ing job, then ok, watch it, but otherwise spend your time on something else.

My vote: 6.5/10

Erased - WWII's forgotten heroes of color ?/10 (NatGeo)

This is pretty new. You can watch the first 3 episodes Monday night.

Idris Elba narrates so do you really need to know anything else?

Fargo (the FX tv series, not the movie) 10/10. Mrs. Ned & I are burning through this very quickly. It is the first show we've watched in a long time which has that Breaking Bad feel, in that we just can't wait to see each next episode. We have always loved the movie, and the series is more of the same. The tv show is an anthology series - all the seasons are loosely related to each other and the film, but each season has an all new plot/cast/etc. Each and every season has been better than the last so far. Even season 3, which started slow (and I didn't like as much at first) but gradually built up to an absolutely brilliant ending

Squaring the Circle - 8/10

British documentary on Netflix about the birth of Hipgnosis. A design studio that created some of the most iconic album covers mainly from the seventies including Dark Side of the Moon and Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy. Very interesting for anyone who loved albums back then. Album covers were a big part of the experience of buying music, which of course faded away with the progression to CDs and especially streaming.
Of course, back then there was no photoshopping, so realizing artistic ideas involving photos was a lot of work and ingenuity. The studio began around the birth of Pink Floyd, so there's also a lot of interesting history there as well.
