Godzilla x Kong: The new Empire 8/10

This movie took my childhood love a kaiju and elevated it to another level. It's cheesy, it's fantastical, it's impossible, it's awesome. Many LOLs were had.

The Beekeeper 8/10

I enjoy the hell out of Youtube channels that fuck up call center scammers. This takes that premise, adds a Captain America level superhero badass, and delivers over the top action with lots of Statham fight choreography.

If I have not mentioned A Quiet Place 1 and 2 before. I liked them. I am a sucker for sci-fi movies. My current rating is 7.5/10 for the first, 7/10 for the second.

sooo ...

it turns out that Hardcore Henry - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3072482/reference/

isn't really good.

You already know the gimmick; the whole film is shot in first person, and it's most about this dude, Henry (who - by the way - is a cyborg), shooting / punching / stabbing & a good deal of environmental-kill-ing people, FPS style.

What you DON'T know is that everything else - the acting, the scene dressing, the cinematography, etc is really, really bad. Straight-to-DVD bad. You know those shovelware korean action/scifi films we've had our favourite torrent sites invaded with? Yeah, those.

The story isn't better than what you would get, well, out of a non-name CoD clone FPS. Henry is a cyborg, but so is every other goon thrown his way. Hordes and hordes of goons.
And, obviously, there's the shooting / parkour / combat aspect, which would be interesting, if it was actually planned right, but the direction and choreography is also very mediocre, and on top of that there's no sense of pacing, it's just the same over and over, and it's just numbing.

The concept was great. And if it had capable people at the helm, then a 30, at most 45m film would have been great, just do what you did here, but better, and spend your budget more wisely. If you got scene A that looks terrific, and then you have scene B that looks like shit, CUT IT OUT OF THE FILM.

I can think of another (dated much later) film that does *kinda* this, but much, much better - Boss Level. it's the same "we'll show you quirky, hyperviolent combat over and over" gimmick, but actually concentrating the good stuff, cutting out the bad stuff, and with a decent sense of pacing.

Yeah, i wouldn't recommend this film. It may have been cool to live the hype back then, but today my vote is : 5.5/10

i also watched Boyz n The Hood - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101507/reference/

a film i like as little today as i did back in 1991.

See, i was in the US during these years, and this was the peak of the 1980s crack epidemic; the news was awash with the ethnically-challenged committing crime upon crime upon crime, and my thoughts on the subject were that, was i one of them, i would want to be as far as i could be, culturally, from that group. I wasn't really up to date with the Contras Affair or the C.I.A.'s involvement into the whole shebang.
So when i watched this film everyone was raving about, i just saw a whole bunch of underprivileged youths reveling in their underprivileged-ness, and found the whole thing disgusting. How am i supposed to feel for these characters?

Well, 30 years later not much has changed. I may have a slightly better perspective on the whole "hood" thing, but the lives of the character still make little sense to me; i can't relate to the way they live, the way they reasons. The "drama" aspect of this - billed as - hood crime drama coming of age film, is that the characters all want something better for themselves, e.g. stay in school or just not go to jail again, and yet, they can't seem to grasp the simple concept of "dont hang out with gangbangers". So when in the end they all die, it seems to me as if they have died out of their own stupidity, Darwin-style, rather than the oppression of the circumstances.

No vote. 7.8/10 on IMDb.

I watched Monkey Man the other night. It's like an Indian John Wick. I had trouble following the dialog but the fight scenes were well done.

Recently saw Godzilla minus one 10/10 Its such a great godzilla movie!
Then I saw the Godzilla x Kong 5.5/10 I didn't dislike it but coming off of Minus one, it was just meh. I grew up on 60s 70s cheezy godzilla but this one was even cheesier. Still good tho.

The story is better so I just ignore him. He looks like a big teddy bear anyway.

Awww, teddy bear being a meanie weanie. Back to the story!
Agreed. I like the story. Let's see how it finishes, with a whimper or a bang.

This Wed is some good TV - Finale of Top Chef, and I like all the three finalists a lot, episode 8 of Dark Matter, which I guess is the finale.

HOD definitely off to a good start this season!

Very unusual movie. All the well known actors are playing supporting roles in this one.

Touches a sensitive subject and deals with it beautifully. But it's not for everyone. Don't go into this one expecting to be entertained. It may move you, maybe to tears and maybe who knows, to action?

i watched Street Kings - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421073/reference/

very average cop thriller starr.. suffering from the lead being give to Keanu reeves, and Forrest Whittaker as supporting. Whittaker is one of my favourite actors, he is magnificent as Bumpy Johnson is Godfather Of Harlem, but despite being given decent dialogue here, he makes little of it, save for a final scene.
The script is every "corruption runs deep" script since Clint Eastwood. Keanu is, with his Chief's blessing, an exterminator. He goes after the BAD bad guys, and kills them. Chief comes in a fudges the evidence to make him get away with it. He's on the edge of the law, but firmly in the good guys camp.
And then whatever average script thing you need to get to the Chief being the actual bad bad guy.

Decent action, i mean, JUST decent, atrocious acting from Reeves, mediocrity all-around from everyone else, just not a satisfying film in any way. If you are expecting Training Day, stay away, and if you are NOT expecting Training Day, then fucking go watch Training Day instead.

6/10 just barely

Would've been a 6 if they could've made a decent ending. But it seemed like they went over budget and the studio gave them a really short deadline to finish filming or the movie never sees the light of day. Well it did see the light of day but only barely as 5/10.

Watch if you wanna see how to get really close to making a watchable movie and then fail.

Lynch's Dune is on Netflix, will give it a watch soon. If anyone has wanted to see it and has Netflix, Lo and Behold!

What's the best one? (hope the answer isn't: it depends)
the european theatrical release.

The spicediver edit just has *all* the Dune shoveled in, regardless of how horrid the scenes are. And for no reasons - given that he's adding in some horribad, grainy, unprocessed footage from the TV series and from the outtakes, he cuts out Virginia Madsen's introduction, and the rain finale.

One of the absolutely baffling changes which are now lost - i had this on VHS - is that the guild navigator had a completely different, deeper voice. I think maybe if you can get a hold of some of the Korean or Japanese market DVDs, some should have the original audio.

There's been *many* releases of this film. https://videofileblog.com/2022/08/31/dune-1984-home-video-history/

House of Dragons s1 was so effing terribad I'm not sure I will watch season 2. ...at least will wait until they are all out.

Also went and saw Furiosa a 2nd time last week, it's even better than I thought. I'm not sure what is the point of the cinema anymore if they continue to project films that aren't made by George Miller.

CB4 - 10/10 - A spoof of the gangsta rap movies from the early 90's starring Chris Rock as Albert & MC Gusto. Allen Payne, Charlie Murphy, Chris Elliot and Phil Hartman are also in this.

This is an all time classic for me and one of those movies that could not be made today. The writing is witty, the music is over the top, and there are life lessons to be learned.

Yeah yeah, I'm licking yer balls...

Finally got around to watching The Flash. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, that would probably be Observe and Report, but possibly the worst superhero movie I've ever seen. Not sure it has any redeeming qualities. Just pure garbage. Avoid at all costs.

i watched .. erm.. HALF of whatever this thing is, Origin.

it's well over 2 hours long. And it's about another ethnically-challenged woman who struggles with some kind of .. race-based grief. Interspersed with Nazi images, and then just veers off into some other oppression that has nothing to do with her. Because the message here is that HATE EXISTS IN MANY FORMS and THE OPPRESSION and idk, i kinda lost track because i'm a white aristocrat that grew up having horse riding, fencing and archery as my sports so i can't really relate to this poor-people stuff. I suppose it could be meaningful to people who have empathy.
