The Rookie 10/10

* Fun cop show (not like CSI)
* Turns into a GOOD cop show, with heart
* Love Nathan Fillion
* Exactly what I want in a TV show...I can play on phone & zone out after a long day while watching, not too serious, but enjoyable!
* Just renewed for Season 7, so plenty to binge-watch!

I've seen a few episodes of The Rookie here and there and it's pretty entertaining. It may be one of the shows I'll binge from the beginning one of these days.

If it's entertainment like that you want, Supernatural is pretty good too. It also went to crap after maybe three seasons. And Heroes. First two seasons are good. Then it also devolves.

Watched Terminator again. Love the snippets of code that scrolled the screen when looking through the Terminators eyes. Seemed to be Assembler for a mini-computer. VAX, PDP, etc. I think the 2nd movie used some COBOL code. Will have to watch to verify.
Been awhile, but I'm thinking 6502.

It's a great TV show to chill with! Not too serious. Plots aren't too involved. One of my favorite pasttimes after a long day at work is getting some munchies & zoning out on Tiktok on my phone with a good show in the background haha

First two seasons of Heroes were EPIC after Lost flubbed the ending & never explained anything in the episodes! But yeah, then it lost the plot. So much fun initially tho!

The Old Man - Jeff Bridges - season 2 starts next month

I watched all of season one when it aired last year. Very cool show. Bridges character is a former "company man" with some terrorists on his tail and he's fighting back.

It has the feeling of a real spy vs whomever. And grampa Bridges nails the role. It's mostly pretty serious but it also has a light hearted side. I loved s01 and looking forward to s02.

jackpot! - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt26940324/reference/

fairly decent non-stop action film based on the premise that, in the great state of california, when you win the lottery everyone else has until sundown to kill you (without using guns) and if they do they claim your prize.
john cena (yeah my shift key is broken) stars as the lottery protection services tough guy, akwafina is average asian female who wins said lottery. cue lots of punching and stunts and, well you know that's the whole film, just a lot of it.

it's ok, but the problem is the the fight choreography and stunts etc are not filmed well and it's often just a blur of unintelligible motion, which [capslock] ACTUALLY FUCKING SUCKS in a film that is 99% action.

6/10 if you accept that this is a stupid action comedy that has a really fun premise but is badly executed.

i watched a 4-hour fan edit of The Hobbit, the "M4 Book Edit", which is half as long as the 8h+ runtime of all 3 films, and obviously it's vastly superior to the original releases, to the point of it being an actually-watchable LOTR film.

i think the .. erm .. "source material" still has tons of faults that aren't easy to overlook. First and foremost, Martin Freeman's horrendous "i'm bri'ish" mannerisms that absolutely grate with the character of Bilbo Baggins. And when you get a situation where pretty much every time your PROTAGONIST speaks and it makes you want to rip your eyes out, you're not gonna have a great film.
The story is obviously very good, but it is very much an inferior work compared to LOTR. The trolls are stupid, the spiders are stupid, and just about every situation is resolved at the very last minute with one guy having gotten away and saving the others. What if Bilbo didn't make the closing doors of mirkwood hall? Yeah well then everyone dies and the story is over. Too many lucky coincidences.

Also, i take particular offence at the dwarves looking like they do, and again i take *extreme* offence at Dain Ironfoot looking like a fucking Warhammer "trollslayer" miniature, with Billy Connelly dubbing a CGI character.
Mind you, this fanedit does away with 90% of the CGI altogether, but even then - being that the story centers around dwarves - there's a shitload of STONE involved in the sets, and you absolutely 100% can tell every time they are on a set instead of a location, and by god the sets are shit in this film. This is after the film was re-encoded to remove that horrid "gleam" that the Peter Jackson production created, with what combination of super-high-res cameras and the 48fps framerate.

all in all i'd give it ALMOST a 7/10. i would say that a good bit of this rating comes from the relief of having watched a version of the hobbit that isn't complete shit, after having suffered through the original 3-film release.

Furiosa - it's on HBO now actually. I enjoyed it. Good origin story and with more info on the Mad Max Universe we are in now. I wish they made a sequel but considering how bad it did at the box office, doesn't seem like it.

I like movies like this because it acted as a window into a different era, in OUR timeline.

Enjoyed it. It's more drama than anything too dramatic though there are moments of dramatism.

Only watch if you are bored of watching same-y movies.

I think that happened because of the ending. Should've let the girl and her guy get away. It was just too brutal and cruel an ending.

Also, Hemsworth was beyond insane, with no logic to his madness. The part where the little girl grows into a young adult is also skipped which I found pretty annoying. There was definitely plenty filler stuff in there that it would've been much preferable to remove the filler material and give more screen time to the little girl's evolution to what she became. I think 15 minutes of that would have sufficed.

Seems like a big budget production. Did not like the chemistry between the leads. Maybe Chris Evans and ScarJo would've been better. Or newer, fresher faces.

Heck, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone would've worked immensely better.

6/10 but just barely.

I think they carried the fake moon landing thing a bit too far. It got kinda boring.

I also watched Furiosa this weekend. Like you said It was a great story. I was hooked within the first 12 minutes and I wasn't expecting much since I didn't care for Fury Road. I may have to give Fury Road another watch.

Tulsa Kings S1
stallone is a mob cappo that gets out after 20yrs in prison. for reasons he is sent to tulsa to build a presence.

the quasi theme is fish out of water or man out of his time. it has the post modern slow progression(less spoonfed) narrative directorial style. there isnt a rush to the next plot point and they will dwell in a scene a little longer than normal for either comedy or drama. the primary failing is that when it comes to the crimes they consulted to get some of the details right but failed to get the law enforcement aspect right. people who should know better use easily traceable phones in the open. it detracts from the premise that stallone's character is a disciplined mafia boss familiar with all the ways law enforcement can jam you.

the plot moves along at subtle pace and builds nicely but rushes it in the last 1.5 episodes and doesnt stick the landing.
they had some nice character arcs building and then they cut off abruptly into tidy ends. i guess getting the 2nd season greenlight shifted the goals.

it is watchable but you wont really rewatch it. there are maybe 3 scenes that have the humor or the feels to make you come back.
i may wait for reviews to decide if i bother watching S2.

Argylle
matthew vaughn side story possibly set in the Kingsman universe.
spy novel author bryce dallas howard find herself caught up in a spy battle due to her books predicting actual world events and outcomes. sam rockwell as the spy trying to keep her alive.
if you watch the trailer it captures the best of premise but the gun ballet should clue you in that this is a bit on the whacky and whimsy side with a touch of absurdism.

the acting is good, the action has a bit of cheesy excess when it comes to the visualfx, the practical stunts are great. it all looks very polished for a lower end big budget movie. beware, it goes into bollywood levels of climaxes.

rockwell is great, dua lipa and john cena are fun additions, the cameos are worth it. my primary problem is brycedallas. her acting is correct for the role but she is sporting mom bod which detracts from some of the later premises, though oddly makes the stunt double substitutions easier.

it is a thoroughly structured movie with a theme, but if you arent onboard for the style or if you come in with different expectations it is easy to never buy in and tune out. which explains the bad reviews. the trailer with rockwell bullet timing out of the floor should have been a hint for those wanting a truer spy movie.

i would watch it again mostly because it a multi-twist movie so seeing the beginning with the knowledge from the end means you can get more out of it. (technically there are parts of the plot that dont add up, but it isnt a full on turn off your brain situation)
8/10
the movie is an original work meta on an actual book series, with the novels being a straighter spy fare supposedly. there is an end credit scene that hints at a proper adaptation possibly with henry cavil and the male lead from enola holmes.

well the HBO transfer is pretty awful, tbh, including the terrible sound that HBO streaming is known for.

The image is completely cleaned up and sterile--no grain, no lovely tarnished desert visuals. Considering that Furiosa is disappointingly digital and cartoony compared to Fury Road, it's much more obvious without all the grain, with what HBO showed. I saw it twice in the theater and it looked very different.

I hope the BD release isn't savaged as horribly as what HBO presented.

Still, it's an excellent film and well deserving.

Um guys--you do realize Furiosa is a prequal, right? The "sequel" was out like 9 years ago. ...but Miller had been talking about a follow up to Fury Road, but with these production schedules, he'll be 98 or something if that ever gets released. Shame, though, because the plan was to release these pretty close to each other.

I'm not really interested in action movies after Miller is gone. What's the point, really? No one else can do it.

why on earth would they do this to one of the world's most hated, vilified, lowest rated, idiotically-scripted, Nielsen-ratings-so-low-they-dont-chart shows to ever be broadcast????

Idiot Disney people should outsource their series and movies to Sony Entertainment.

At least now everyone involved in that series can breathe a sigh of relief and go on to do better things, if their career isn't permanently scarred by this job, that is.

They should do a prequel to that with Carrie Ann-Moss as the main protagonist. She was awesome.
