Anything that's as much of a phenom as the first one was, you know that they're going to milk the piss, shit and bile out of that puppy. Sorry that was a bit graphic but the last movie was really shit. If you hadn't seen the first ones (when Harrison Ford didn't look like a shriveled, bent raisin), I can see how kids might have liked it. But it really wasn't much better than a rerun.

OK, first 4 then 3. It will make me appreciate 3 more I think

no, just don't watch 4. at least, wait a long time and do it when drunk and ready to hate life.

You know how people hate Godfather 3? I always find some decent moments there, over the 3 hours, and when I go into those Godfather re-watches I don't really think about not watching GF 3.

for Indy...no, there is nothing redeeming about 4. No reason to watch it. It's really weird, though, because Spielberg was in charge of that and I can't really think of a single movie that he's directed that was actually unwatchable, or simply bad. I'm not the biggest fan of the guy, but he doesn't make shit movies. Except for Crystal Skull. It's nuts.

Re-binging The West Wing. One of the best written shows in TV history. How we wished things actually were.

The newest Indy wasn't nearly as bad as the LeBeef fridge Indy movie.
so ..

I have watched the very mediocre Indiana Jones and the Dial Of Destiny - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1462764/reference/

1. it wasn't anywhere near as insultingly bad as IJ4. Like, not on the same planet.

2. it is still a bad film.
the production is vaguely close to what IJ1 was, the photography is decent, but isn't used with anywhere near the mastery of IJ1, which is still a visual masterpiece.
The plot is also decent; there is a good McGuffin that has reasonable powers, and tied to it there is a pretty solid villain - played very competently by Mads
Mikklesen. Not a perfect character, because he becomes better as time goes on, while you'd generally want your villains to be villainous from scene 1. I love the
"Nazi who wants to kill Hitler" twist.
The character of .. whatever her name is .. the granddaughter? of Indiana, is super fucking annoying. Rather than being a "Girl Boss" character, i think the faults
are that, she's constantly fucking smirking, she can't keep a tone, can't deliver a line that both believable and consistent, goes from fraternal to treasonous and back
in the blink of an eye, and on top of that is just fucking ugly.
To be 100% honest, i found the kid to be even worse, but at least he's only marginally in the film.

3. Indiana Jones is a shit character in this film.
Harrison Ford actually did a much better job here than in that monstruosity which is IJ4 - probably, because he watched IJ4 and got shocked back into giving a shit
about his acting - but the "old version of a character known for being athletic and dashing" is just not fun.
There's also quite a few, badly done attempts at playing a gag of "whoops Indiana, you're not young anymore" that are meant to be fun, and they are *not* fun, and it really
stings when they come onscreen.
But it's also true that there's some decent scenes in here, just not used effectively.

4. i think the film would have been better if the introduction was placed in the middle.
See, if you START by showing us old, retired Indiana working in a boring desk job at the university, then when we are shown the train sequence, it kinda explains WHY
we need to put up with the uncanny-valley digital deaging of Indiana; it's because we're shown something we know is not part of the NOW in the story, but has relevance
AND we need to know that it happened when he was younger.

5. the action scenes were confusing and not well done - not a small crime in a Indiana Jones film.
I did however like the CIA girl, and the nazi goons were really good as faceless-nazi-goons.

This along with a thousand little changes would have made for a vastly superior film, but at least it hasn't got alien skulls and bomb-proof refrigerators.

Crystal Skull: 3.5/10
Dial Of Destiny: eh, 5/10. Probably 4.5/10 because it pains me that Indiana Jones can have fallen so far, if they had used brand new character it would have been a 5-5.5/10

The Gentlemen
guy richie series where he gets to do his thing on a longer format. writer credit goes to matthew read but richie has co-writer credit.
english duke gets caught up in organized crime and attempts to extract himself and his family from their situation. tons of characters and factions of criminals with eccentric characters and slight film noir touches. dark humor and dramatic absurdity tone with a theme of paralleling aristocracy and criminals.
cast and acting is on point, some of the relationships feel like they have years of familiarity. cinematography is gorgeous and sets are polished. the longer format allows richie to take his time and layer in all kinds of callbacks and foreshadowing. if you arent into the whole "we're all fk'd" situational despair style of movies, it may not be your cup of tea.

9.5/10
not sure if i want a 2nd season, it had a specific intention and executes it well with a proper ending.

If I've already watched the film, does the series have anything to offer?

Star Wars - Acolytes - 4/10

Same 2 problems as always:

1. Trying to appeal to both kids AND adults
2. Trying to appeal to both an American AND international audience

You end up with a cobbled-together product that doesn't really hit the mark for any particular target audience...

Review:

1. Similar slow pacing to Boba Fett. It took me awhile to get through all of the episodes. Sol's death was just kind of...perfunctory.
2. I never really bought into the story. Osha's dark side conversion felt pretty meh.
3. This COULD have been an outstanding series, but there was no meat in it. I wanted to learn SO MUCH MORE about the Force witches!
4. The heck was up with the "Hidden Tiger, Crouching Dragon" floating bit in the fight scene last episode? Felt like when Leia floated in space lol.

Positives:

1. The mid-season forest lightsaber fight where the Wookie lived was imo the best choreography in all of Star Wars. Got me hyped about the remaining episodes!
2. The color-changing lightsaber was pretty cool
3. Space shots CGI were OUTSTANDING. Great planets, great spaceships. It's incredible how good TV show graphics are these days!
4. The Sith helmet was dope. Great saber-protection features, super awesome voice. WAY better of a villain than the tantrum-throwing Kylo Ren!

?? season ??
so, not the film?
the gentlemen (2019) movie
the gentlemen (2024) 8 ep series on netflix
If I've already watched the film, does the series have anything to offer?
the movie and series are separate things. they have similar set pieces in there is a faction running the mj trade using the same hiding technique, but the actual plot/story telling is different and the themes/tones cover slightly different territory.
the movie is a big name star fest with a slightly convoluted storytelling order and framing mechanism. the series is a more linear tale with for the most part lesser known actors. the lack of familiarity with the actors for american audiences makes it feel more real life, with less over the top behavior and extremes. it is subtle and not pressing its points into your face.

spoilers for ep1 in order to set the premise and roles(if you think you might want to watch then avoid).
the series is about the younger son(captain in the royal army) of a duke taking over the title and estate after the duke's death. the cost of maintaining the estate he inherits along with the older brother's debts forces him into a difficult position. he then learns that his father had made a deal with organized crime to grow mj underground on the estate for a large sum each year. the person running the operation is a mysterious dark haired woman(film noir requisite) who attempts to get him to continue the agreement.
the new duke finds himself getting caught up in dealings with other crime families in an attempt to extricate himself and family members from any connection with the criminals. there are a bunch of developments that make it harder and harder to see a way out. an overarching theme is: who can you trust.

it is the opposite side of the plot of the movie. mickey is the protagonist and you are getting his gang's viewpoint with the nobles being background fodder. in the series theo the duke, his family, and some of the other nobles are the protagonists and all the criminal factions being antagonists or fodder.

the main difference with the series is that they have time to develop the family characters so that you care about them and can feel the stakes when they are threatened. the movie has to use voice over and meta commentary cleverness to rush you through the complicated plot points/introductions at the start of the movie. the series can take their time and it feels less forced and more like a natural development.

minor movie spoilers
in the movie you are obligated to be on mickey and family's side even though they are gangsters doing bad things while lampshading the moral questions with the mj trade be less destructive so you dont feel so bad about the protagonist killing so many people. there is less question or doubt about how the movie will end, even with the flash forward shooting in the pub/bar gimmick at the start. no one is innocent: not the wife, not the kid/punks, not the minor criminals. but the series has characters who you can feel bad for because they just get caught up in circumstances.

Hundreds Of Beavers - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12818328/reference/

Dialogue-free, black&white absurdist comedy about a fur trapper, who needs to trap hundreds of beavers.

Literally anything i say after this would be spoilers that will ruin *some* part of the enjoyment, so if you decide to watch it, 7/10, otherwise read on.

i recommend a healthy dose of beer and vodka and preferably some friends in the same state of mind.

Imagine a live-action remake of the early 1940s cartoons, think Cuphead but zero budget and the art designers make things look fake on purpose. Like, there's a scene where the protagonist and a trapper are discussing (without dialogue) the awesome qualities of a certain horse, and the horse is a dude in a horse suit, with the dude's face sticking out of the suit.

It can be a bit hard to get into, hence the vodka. Totally worth it by the end.

Mrs. Ned & I discovered by accident that all episodes of Ren & Stimpy are on Paramount+. See you in a month.
I used to watch Ren and Stimpy with my mom on Sunday mornings. She would make breakfast and give her view. Good times.

i watched

The Return Of The Living Dead - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089907/reference/

1985 comedy back from when sequels were still somewhat decent, it was critically scorned for abandoning the social commentary of the previous films, and replacing it with comedy, but it had also a very good audience response, which once again shows that film critics are full of shit.
What you lose in the feeling of dread and desolation, you gain abundantly in MORE! zombies, more gore, more laughs.
Also, it seems that the dubbed version i watched in italy 40 years ago was HEAVILY censored, because in this version there is a smoking hot chick that takes it all off and she's got a magnificent rack.

You know, it's a classic. it's the film with the line "send more paramedics" which inspired the band of the same name. It's got tits, zombies, nukes, "braaaaains", all that good stuff that you expect from a film that genuinely just wants you to have fun.

Highly recommended. 7/10
