"8 fully buffered DOIMMs, an incredible design and beautiful, simple access to it all. We've had a lot of fun building great configurations for our customers. One standard configuration... Dual 2 2.66 dual core Xeons, 1 GB, 667 MHz FB-DIMM. 250GB HD. Nvidia geforce 7300GT, 256 MB and 16xc superdrive for $2499. I know what you're thinking. Apple makes the best computers but they're expensive. We're going to bust that myth. Similar configuration about a thousand dollars less than Dell.""

"We've really worked on Build to Order. Most customers go this route. You an choose what processor speed you want. You can add up to 16 GB of memory and you can upgrade to an ATI Radion or Quadro FX 4500, Bluetooth and AirPort. Almost 5 million possible configurations. So that's the new Mac Pro. A Quad Xeon 64-bit workstation. And the Mac Pro will start shipping... today." (Applause). The transition is complete, Jan 10 to Aug. 7. Just 210 short days."

Since it starts at $2499 with only a gig of RAM and 250 GB of storage space, I'm not that excited.

And a 7300GT for $2499... good job Apple!

At least it's a quad-core. Hopefully those are Meroms...

Why did they keep that ugly "cheesegrater" case design? It was lame 2 years ago, and it's STILL lame now.

Um I for one think the apple case is pretty damn nice. I think Lian-Li did as well when they released a similar looking "cheesegrater" case. The Mac Pro does seem pretty damn nice aside from the vid card.

Couldn't you build something like this yourself with the right server dual-socket motherboard and Xeon chips?

You could build it, no one ever said you couldn't. But for the non-builders market, this is a pretty good workstation that is actually moderately priced in terms of apple standards / dell standards. But I'm not too sure if you can build a machine to run OSX...

Man, I dont need quad processors, what I do need is a good dual core procecessor, 2 gigs of ram, and a 7900GT...Wait, I have that already. How about they give me OSX?

Pretty good workstation-class machine. Not something for the budget gamer though. Was a little disappointed that it doesn't come with 2GB standard and more than 250GB out of the box for $2499. All-in-all it's a rather unsurprising machine. OS X 10.5 seems nice, but again no big surprises. There wasn't anything that was a definite "killer-app" that blows everyone out of the water.
But this is ATOT and the hate-kiddies get all in an uproar when you mention something besides Windows and budget machines held together with glue and duct tape that they play their pirated games on.

i'll be impressed if you can do intense work(was gonna say games...but its a mac) on one of these in a warm atmosphere for a few hours. Or if the battery lasts long enough for you to look back at the screen after you unplug it

I'm still waiting for Windows benchmarks so I can decide if I want to sell my old G4 and my PC, get the Mac Pro and use Boot camp for my XP stuff.

no legacy PCI? hmmm. is there such a thing as a PCI-e cardbus adapter that works with macs?

From the pricing I've done, it comes out about the same as building your own, not counting the OS, and if you upgrade the ram from elsewhere. not bad.

That's what I was going to do, but then I realized Apple makes terrible computers, and I decided to build my own and dual-boot with Vista and Leopard. Then I realized you can't custom-build a mac...
