My question is, will the Macbooks receive the Santa Rosa treatment before mid-August?

Doesn't seem like it. The Macbooks were updated about 3 weeks ago, so it probably won't be until the end of the year until they're updated again.

said thing is that 2600XT mobile would have been better upgrade.. saw the benchmark and it is about 25% faster than 8600GT mobile and consume less power. But i am looking to obtain a ASUS G2 notebook. The Exterior Design is so much better than mac pro.

That notebook is loaded with feature and cheaper price

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...e/display/asus-g2.html

The only thing it lacks is MAC OSX but i can install MAC OSX on a my machine and it runs just fine

They don't want to the MacBook line to compete with the MacBook Pro line - that's why they're not upgrading it to Santa Rosa right away. I think they ran into that issue when they first released the MacBooks - nearly all of the specs were the same; the primary difference was the video card (aside from screen size and price). While the MacBooks are still powerful, they are now lagging behind the MacBook Pros which makes the Pros look better.

The Asus looks a little tacky...but maybe thats just me. I suppose the red is a little better than the green in the G1

No, because the Apple subforum is in the Software Forum. So long as we keep talking about the MacBook Pro and it's hardware, we are solid. We can also talk about iMacs, Mac Minis, Sony Vaios, Dell Latitudes, and kittens.

If it's about iKittens then you have to go to the Apple forum. Sorry.

That shoes a notebook with an X1700. I don't get your point?

Well, you only have to wait another week for WWDC to see if they release the new iMacs. If you really want a Mac, buy it now! Leopard won't be out until later this year, and then you'll have to wait another 6 months for bug fixes and for developers to port their software to 10.5. It's just like upgrading to Vista - it's better to wait awhile for things to be smooth. I won't be upgrading to Leopard until probably mid-2008 because of those reasons.

I have to take exception to that, because OS X updates don't work like Windows updates. Tiger was already in 10.4.4 in the fall/winter of 2005, and it was released in April of 2005. I'm pretty sure the first update came within a month or so of its release.

I expect 10.5 to be relatively smooth upon release, and beyond that, to be very stable and up to the usual standards once 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 comes along. It shouldn't take too long for that to happen. If it comes out in October, expect those updates by Christmas.

Just so I stay on topic, the newest MBPs and the second revisions should both be 64 bit with Leopard's arrival. The hardware is there for it, and I'm looking forward to the operating system catching up to the hardware that's already onboard.

Now that WWDC has come and gone, I'd say there's no reason to wait on getting a new MBP, unless you're determined to get Leopard free with it. Whatever you get now, it should be able to take full advantage of 10.5, and deliver pretty good performance.

im looking to purchase a new macbook cause of the update
i was wondering if its worth the $500 jump from the 2.2ghz model to the 2.4ghz one?

im a college student and i would be using it mainly for some gaming and general work
also, how is the gaming situation on a mac w/windows nowadays?

Well, the 2.4 comes with a 256 MB 8600 nVidia card, and a 160 HD. both the 2.2 and 2.4 come with 2 GBs of RAM now, so that's no longer a reason to get the higher of the two.

If you can, I'd wait a couple months for the refurbs to start coming along, and then grab a 2.4 for the price of a 2.2. That's how I got my 2.33 MBP.

I don't think that it will be anything painfully apparent, but I could be wrong. To the best of my knowledge, there are no benchmarks out yet that directly compare the two... You could always go to an apple store and try out both machines, see if the techs will let you install a mac equivalent to 3DMark (no, I dont know if such a thing exists) or something.

They point out that the 8600M video clocks higher for the 17-inch than the 15-inch - probably because they don't have to worry as much about case heat. At any rate, the difference isn't large enough to dissuade someone from getting the smaller models.

I just purchased one today... the 2.2ghz, mainly because of a number of sites that bench marked the two 15.4"s and there was very little performance difference. I upgraded to the 160GB drive, although not the 7200rpm due to the long wait. (weeks)

I'm moving from a 2.16 GHZ C2D MBP... I just recently sold it.

It hasn't shipped, but I'm excited.

I'm probably going to move to 4GB of ram due to the cheap price... ($200 or so from newegg)

I am curious as to what you think of performance. I have a Core Duo 1st gen, and I am debating on the purchase.

i wonder how much better the battery life will be with led backlighting. from what i remember, ccfl tends to drain a sizeable amount.

Battery life on the LED-lit models tends to extend by an extra 30-60 minutes of real battery power. I also hear the 17-inch (which still uses CCFL) also gets an extra 15 minutes or so.

I got it yesterday... so far it doesn't seem any faster then my 2.16ghz although that's too be expected. It seems like a nice PC, and since it was basically a free upgrade, it was definitely worth it. I haven't installed windows yet, so I haven't really tried out the graphics yet, but I'd assume there probably is quite a bit of difference between the x1600 and the 8600m

I am experiencing temptation to buy this macbook pro.
With student discount (my university login still works) I can get macbook pro 2.2 ghz for 1799 and get $200 off an ipod nano.
Since I am due for an ipod upgrade anyways, this will effectively bring the price of laptop to 1599.
Anyone use Apple and XP? How hard is it to live with only one button?

It really brings the price of the laptop down to 1799 and the price of the ipod to 0.

But anyway, I have Vista and OS X installed on my macbook, and it works well. using the trackpad in OS X is completely intuitive and natural, you can tap the trackpad with two fingers to secondary click (right click) and then place two fingers on the trackpad and move them to scroll around the screen in any direction.

As far as Windows goes... you place two fingers and click the button to right click. Two finger scrolling works as well, but i am not positive if it works horizontally. The Bootcamp 1.3 drivers really are something.
