New major appliance time...what are your recommendations?

We’re going to replace all the major appliances in the coming weeks...probably during the labor day sale. The wife wants stainless steel.

I’ve only started looking at refrigerators and will probably get the Samsung RF4287HARS

http://www.lowes.com/pd_330637-149-...uctId=3240550&Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1

I still need to research the gas stove, dish washer, front loading washer and gas dryer. There are too many choices and its quite overwhelming. The fridge will probably be the most expensive piece. I’m thinking we’ll spend about $1500 each for the other pieces, more or less…

Any recommendations?

thanks

I have a similar model as that refrigerator. The ice maker takes up way too much space. I am thinking a side by side would have been better. no other issues with it though.

I have the Samsung FX710 gas range. The center burner doesn't light half the time, I still need to contact them about that. Also the temperature setting on the stove was way off on mine (~30 degrees too low), had to get an oven thermometer to adjust it. I don't really see a whole lot of benefit from the convection feature, but I might not use it enough to notice.

i did thought about going all samsung for a little bit, but the initial research shows they have sub-par dish washers...maybe their gash range isn't so great either...

Most of the stuff they pump out now-a-days is trash that will need repair in a few years.

That even includes wanna-be high end like Electrolux etc.

You want something that lasts, you have to pony up big bugs for name brands like sub-zero or go with a commerical line of products.

Get French Door and get ice and filtered water on the door.

I got French Door when I bought my house in 2008 but am kicking myself now for not getting Ice and filtered water on the door.

Also, find what you like then go to Best Buy and they'll price match plus 10% of the difference plus free delivery. Every appliance I've bought in the past 5 or so years I've done this since I can often find a better deal at Home Depot and Lowes but both places (usually) charge $50 for delivery.

Also, at Best Buy you use or sign up for Best Buy Reward Zone and on my fridge alone I got $100 Best Buy gift card in the mail.

french door fridge for sure. we have a nice Kenmore ELITE. Dishwasher I'd go Bosch. We've had 2 and they are great.

I'd go black or stainless look...real stainless is PITA to keep clean...and it won't hold refrigerator magnets.

when they deliver the new appliances, do they typically hook it up for gas/water and haul away the old ones?

I've heard mixed things about Samsung appliances. A bit pricey for what you ultimately get. Kenmore are usually pretty decent and not too expensive. Whether or not Sears still stands by their products like they used to is a whole new kettle of fish. Unfortunately no appliances have great build quality anymore. 10 year life if you're lucky.

The other suggesting I can make is DON'T GET STAINLESS STEEL. It looks good at first but it's a bitch to clean.

Agree 100% on the Kenmore Elite and Bosch. My parents have the Kenmore front load washer & dryer and the Bosch dishwasher. Both are fantastic. Dishwasher is the only time I'd suggest stainless steel, for the interior anyway. The white plastic tubs stain up pretty bad. Especially if you've got tomato sauce on anything.

I know this will fall on deaf ears but, buy used. All the manufacturers offer stainless versions. Most are simply panels that slide in on the doors and sides. It sounds like the wife is buying more for looks than for utility.

What do you want from your appliances? Used can save you huge amounts of money and is every bit as dependable as new (which isn't saying a lot) but, I've had very good luck with my used appliances for the last twenty years and I'm a Chef.

Used and scratch/dent models that some stores offer. All of them are merely cosmetic, and most of them are on sides that will be against a wall or another appliance anyway so you won't see it.

I assume your current appliances work. Why be thrilled with someone hauling them away from you for free? You can easily sell the working appliances. Hell, people would be happy to "haul them away for free" because they can make some decent money selling them for scrap metal.

Recommendations: I have never regretted my Jenn-Air dual fuel stove. The burners on top (5) are gas. The ovens are electric. I never knew how much better electric ovens were than gas ovens. Convection is an added bonus.
I never used the roaster in the old oven; the stove I got actually has 2 ovens. The roaster/main oven configuration is switched. There's a smaller oven on top. I use that smaller oven more often than the larger oven. It's perfect for a pizza, or a sheet of cookies, reheating, etc. Plus, at Thanksgiving, etc., I can be baking pies in one oven and a turkey in the other oven.

Very high rating as well. The electric ovens provide more even heat than most gas ovens. Plus, you can roast a turkey in the middle of the summer and it won't warm your kitchen up by a degree. The outside of the stove barely gets warm to the touch, even if I have it cranked up to 500 degrees inside. Since it's not burning natural gas, it doesn't have to vent the products of burning that gas - in other words, while not "air-tight", a lot more of the heat is sealed in.

Bought a stacked Frigidaire washer/dryer combo in 2008. Been happy with it so far. Basic washer/dryer combo, dials (instead of the electronic controls that cost a couple hundred for a replacement board), front load. Just basic white enamel though...which I think would be easier to keep clean than stainless in a laundry room, it wipes up easily.

just bought new GE fridge and over the range microwave for the new house, stainless steel is hard to clean, but have learned some tricks since to keep it clean. love the ice maker and filtered water, no more worrying about ice running out because I forgot to refill the tray after getting half drunk or dealing with brita water filters lol

ice and filtered water from fridges... scares me. people dont clean them out, ever.

i like the r/o filter systems you put under your sink. and for ice, i either buy it or make it in trays that i can easily wash. even the auto ice makes inside freezers get dirty and nobody ever cleans them because its hard to.

we change out our filter every 3 months or so, the fridge tells us to
also change the air filter

have an electrolux fridge with freezer on bottom, french door fridge, getting a fridgedair range gas, 5-6 burner kinda like the one doc P posted except the smaller oven is next to the larger one not on top of it (36 inch main + 18 inch small) microwave will be fridgedair as well not sure what and i think the dishwasher is gonna be a wirlpool

looked at wolf, viking and bluestar but was really hard to justify the cost of a $10K range

I won't recommend specific models, but sometimes I see almost new stainless steel appliances on Craigslist for half price. Also, setting up a deal alert on slickdeals could really come in handy. Sometimes they'll have an entire appliance set on a really good sale.

This is true. There is a reason you see those massive wolf commercial style stoves still hanging in there in old places.

Wolf is a brand I'd look into, they are great stoves (used 2) and they last forever.

yes wolf is great so is viking and sub zero and a few other, the isue is the cost of entry into them is so expensive you can get a large number of consumer models for the same price

i know that we could have gotten 4 of the fridgidair model we got for the same price as the equivelent wolf,

We just purchased new appliances for the house my wife and I moved into back in March. The kitchen appliances are all Fridgidaire and the fridge is the gallery version which i hear from BestBuy and Warner Stallion is better than regular Fridgidaire. The sales person said ratings are good for brands until you get an ice maker and water dispenser then even the best brand can become crap. This is true based on the reviews i had poured over. I love the French Doors with freezer on bottom. So much less moving stuff around when you put something in or take it out.

For Washer and Dryer again all brands have mixed reviews, but i think there are people who hate how the new washers don't clean as well since they use less water.

I would not go front load wash machine unless you want to clean it each week to prevent mold growth and smell. Plus the newest top loaders have a bigger tub.

Sear's own brand Kenmore is Maytag/Whirlpool and their Elite is LG, at least for washers and dryers. I don't think it is a secret when you talk to their sales reps on who makes their products.

I did exactly the same thing over the last few years (except for my fridge). I was able to get a stainless dishwasher and a stainless range, but was unable to get stainless washer and dryer. I waited a long time for the washer and dryer too (1.5 years) and did not ever see a good deal on the stainless units. I ended up just getting white.

I did not look for specific model numbers. I waited for a model to go on a deep discount and then determined if the model was something I wanted.

According to consumer reports you are dead on about the icemaker and water dispenser, it seems many brands tank in that category.
