New MBP Vs. Old MBP

Well, I couldn't justify the extra $400 for the new MBP over the 2.5Ghz MBP. $1600 seemed like a steal to me, and the performance difference isn't that great from everything I've read. I figured I'll put that $400 towards a Nehalem release in a year or two. Pulled the trigger on it, can't wait!

Yes.. this is what I'm doing personally. I love my machine now, and don't really have a need for more power at the moment. I would love to have the newer trackpad, and user replaceable HDD, but it's not that big of a deal. I'm going to wait until Nehalem comes out next year, and Snow Leopard and get whatever the best combination is to run that.

I don't think that Apple will completely negate the performance gains of OpenCL with the 8600GTM line, but I think that there will be even MORE performance to be had, if Apple will utilize the other features of the 9600/9400 GPU combo (ie Hybrid SLI).

So I'll be waiting until Macworld to see what that entails. My work was going to buy me a current model, but looks like they're a bit hesitant now... so we'll see how that goes.

In theory, Snow Leopard will better utilize the GPU in processing besides 3D acceleration. In practice, I wouldn't get too hyped up about future software implementations in this area.

For example, Quartz 2D Extreme was touted for Tiger but quietly shoved under the rug. It was hoped that Leopard would be resolution-independent but that didn't happen either.

sorry, i've been really busy with work this past week... fell behind due to gf's mom being in town. i really havn't had a chance to test the battery life...

i'll play around with it a little bit this weekend and get back to ya...
