This announcement has spawned a lot of interesting articles. The one from DailyTech is also good and now AnandTech has one too .

Edit: it's funny that I can read whole articles on Seekingalpha, EETimes, DailyTech, ExtremeTech, IEEE Spectrum and others on a multitude of possible memory technologies, yet the suggestions of AnandTech are none of those!

Given that Intel stated it isn't PCM, I think AnandTech might be onto something, although PCMS wouldn't surprise me.

Great article in any case.

BTW, this kind of announced make me really sad that Anand has left since I'd be looking forward to a podcast discussing it.

Well, ya know, Samsung got to reap the minor benefits of being first to 3D NAND for awhile... Now Intel/Micron will get to reap the benefits of selling 3D XPoint to all those high-end NAND applications with the best margins.

It'll be interesting to see how long it is before anyone else can reverse engineer the technology to come up with something similar which doesn't step on whatever patents are in place. Certainly hope that the answer is a number of years such that Intel and Micron get to recoup their research investments.

Since this stuff makes a new space for itself, maybe Samsung will keep its first-mover advantage.

Should point out that in the AT article Micron mentions a second memory type which is two years out. Either it's the 'real' DRAM replacement or it's a chip more suitable for mobile than enterprise, which is what XPoint is first aimed at.
