New MOBO and CPU

I have and old HP computer that I decided to upgrade. It has some kind of ASUS Mobo and a Pentium 4. I ordered an MSI G33M and an E2160 Dual Core.

I knew this probably would not work, but I tried anyway. I just replaced the mobo and cpu and left everyting else the way it was, hoping it would work. It didn't!

I tried inserting the mobo driver CD and booting from it, but came up with nothing.
I really want to keep all of the info on the HD.
Is this possible, or will I have to erase?
Is there a way I can back up all the info on the HD?
The HD has Windows XP Media Center Edition , and I own a copy of Windows XP.
I aslo have my gaming rig, that has enough space in it's single 250GB HD to back up all the info, if it is possible.

Thanx,
Josh

New mobo usually equals a new Windows install. If I were you I would copy your stuff to your gaming rig and then reinstall the things you need after you do a clean install on the new computer. Easiest way is to just put the hard drive in the other computer.

Ok, Both mobo's have a LGA 775. I tried installing the dual-core in the old mobo, and it won't boot. Any suggestions.

Sure. By 'won't boot' what do you mean? STOP 7B when you boot, or some other error?

If it's a stop 7B, you could put the drive in your old machine, add drivers for the disk controller on your new motherboard (somehow - sometimes it isn't easy) and then assumedly you could boot on the new hardware.

If it's an ACPI issue (different HALs) you're outta luck.

So then what you can do (if you're outta luck) is do a repair install of XP. Google that; basically you reinstall XP on top of the existing installation, keep all your programs (usually), and just have to reapply all the patches/etc. to your "new" XP install.

Hey, I really appreciate the help. By "won't boot", I mean that nothing ever shows up on the screen. The computer runs, but nothing happens. Fans are on, but nothing is running. No error what-so-ever.

This computer has XP Media Center, is it possible to to do a reinstall with my copy of XP?

Would it be possible to get a new HD, and install everything, then hook up the old HD and transfer all of the files. I want to know if this will work b/c the old HD has media center and I have XP Pro.

OR....Would it be easier (Or possible) to get a new HD and back-up everything on it then overwrite the old HD and get all of the files back. Again, will this work b/c the old HD has Media Center and I have XP Pro?

For datafiles, sure you can transfer anything anywhere. If you don't want to reinstall all your programs, I'd just do a repair install.

OH Crap! I backed up all of my files and did a repair install of XP. I am currently at the part where it asks you for the product key. It tells me that the key I entered is not valid(I entered the key from my copy of XP). Is this because it wants the key from the origional version of media center? If so, I have no idea how to get it.

Nevermind. I searched the hidden files on my XP CD, and found that I had written the product key incorrectly on my cd.
