help please!!!

Just put together an ASUS P4pe/l/gd Skt478 I845pe with a pentium P4 2.53G. THe system ran (surge preotected) for about 5 secs before the fuse to the PSU blew. unmounting the Mobo/CPU from the case and disconnecting everything, I eventually found that the Mobo would fire up with the CPU not in place (but with the CPU fan plugged in), but as soon as I popped the CPU into place, the mains fuse blew again (Yep, I watched the fan spin for about 5 seconds).
This was reproducable using a differant PSU.

I assume there is a problem with the MOBO, though i suppose it could be the P4. Am having trouble returning the combo to Ebuyer, as they only want the bit thats at fault (how helpful!). All my other gear is AMD, so Icant try swapping.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong, or if there is anything I can do to put it right?

YOurs in anticipation....TextText

I wondered that too at first, but the same thing happened when the Mobo was unmounted from the case, ie- powered up lying on some of that 'insulation' plastic wrap that the componants come in (on top of some bubble wrap and a wooden table).

Recheck every single wire?... And every connection?... And start off with bare minimum... Also, do You have a Power Supply that can handle that configuration?... I think there talking like 350 to 400watts nowadays?

Hmmm....can't see how a CPU can cause a PSU to blow....I would suspect that it's the motherboard thats to blame....when it's trying to supply power to the CPU it creates some sort of feedback??

Ebuyer....their customer services are a pile of rubbish....I love the way you are only allowed to raise one query at a time, if you try to raise another it comes up with "You have too many notes open" I raised a note about this once....they close it without answer!! :|

Just had a thought....if the CPU is completely dead then I guess there is some way it could be causing some kind of short....but it's a longshot....

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

the PSU was 400, so OK there (the second one I tried was 350).

Ebuyer have finally taken it back, though if they find a fault on the CPU they'll probably charge me a re-packing fee for the Mobo!!!

well, there's always PCworld....
