So I got this situation. I have laptop with 14" display, 1 DP and 1 VGA (no HDMI) and this resolution: 1366 x 768. I'm currently thinking about getting a 21:9 monitor for productivity use (school, research, multitasking) and for watching movies. So colors and lack of backlight bleed is important.
Two 16:9 displays don't seem to be an option since I only have 1 DisplayPort (and 1 vga).

So far:
I ordered 2x 21:9 monitors. The "LG 29UC88-B" and the "Samsung S34E790C". I sent them both back. Here's why.
LG: Looks great for office work but it's absolutely aweful when watching video's. The color seems, no matter how much I tweaked the setting, completely unrealistic. I've had the same problem with a LG tv I got in 2013.
Samsung: Viewing angle is a little bit dissapointing for a 34" (for 29" probably no problem). Like many Samsung monitors there's this annoying buzzing noise when it's on.
For my taste, I think 34" is a little bit to big for me so I highly prefer to get a 29" display.

What I want to know is this:
What is the best way to go? Because, and this is question number 2, there is currently no 29" display with 1440p out so when is there one going to come out (if ever)?
What brand would be good other than Samsung and LG? Dell seems promosing for color but it seems to have lots of backlight bleeding.
A good 29" 1440p display would solve all of my problems.

Skip IPS panel displays for movie watching. You're going to want a VA panel to get close to having decent blacks. But you've already sent back the S34E790C which is one of the better VA 21:9 units. VA panels are typically worse viewing angle versus an IPS but they are still good.

You might get more mileage out of looking at 4k displays rather than trying to go for 21:9. 21:9 still has a pretty big premium where the 4k ones have come down a lot. I would suggest actually looking into small 4k UHD TVs as they have to have good blacks, but no HDMI 2.0 on your laptop will slow you down there since hardly any 4k TVs have DP

Also if you're okay spending in the $700-800 range, buy yourself a colorimeter and calibrate the display. This should make a world of a difference for movies and office work.
