New monitor question

With my tax money, I figured i'd spend a little bit of it to get one of the more highly recommended 8ms or 12ms 17" LCD screens, since I believe I would have no troubles with them in the games I play. This is my system:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 90nm @ 2.4Ghz
2x512Mb Crucial Ballistix DDR400
Abit AV8
2x80GB Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 SATA RAID0 (video creation/editing and more)
Leadtek GeForce 6600GT AGP overclocked ~18% (but is also stable at a MUCH higher percentage).

As you can see, I really shouldn't have any problems. I think its painfully obvious which ones are the best to get, but I can find other CRTs like a Sony CPD-E440 used on Amazon.com ('Very Good' condition rating) for $149 as well. Should I change my LCD decision and go for an FD Trinitron monitor instead? It sounds like a good choice, what do you guys think? I figure I should ask anandtech forum posters because, of course, they're just that awesome:beer:.

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 997DF T/T already and it is fabulous but I would like something better and I'm in a giving mood and would like to give my brother this one so that he can have a great monitor too.

I'd suggest you go LCD unless you're a die-hard professional who needs a CRT to display the high resolutions for editing programs, etc. etc.

I think they are Diamondtrons(Mitsubishi) sony stopped making Trinitron monitors when the patene rights expired an so Diamondtrons are the new Trinitrons.
Trinitrons are GREAT for GFX intensive work like video and games. try it if you have the desk space.

btw, with a 6600gt, you wont be able to play some newer games at native resolutions of the lcds(12x10, farcry, DOOMIII highest settings are a bad idea.) so might as well go LCD. you can choose any resolution you want.

Actually I will be able to play some newer games at native resolutions, because I already checked it out . I played Doom III and HL2/CSS at 1280x1024 on my 19" CRT and they're just fine. I didn't say that I set them to the highest FSAA/Aniso filtering settings, just those resolutions. I have CS:S at 2x FSAA and 4x Anistropic filtering and it is perfectly smooth. This isn't a system i'm going to be building, its a system I'm already using, hence the dilemma I have.

I am aware of the production halt of their trinitrons, but then again that CPD-E440 wasn't a new monitor, I said it was used . I considered a while ago of maybe an FE991SB but people are pretty much split 50-50 on it so I didn't go with it.

I agree with you, Kensai, since I saw one of the monitors I was thinking of at best buy (went there for a different reason though) and it looked fantastic. I had never really seen either of the highly recommended ones until about 30 mins after posting this topic and people didn't disappoint with their praise of them . I have a condition that makes my eyes very sensitive to light, so I guess an LCD makes sense. Besides, it seems like no reputable seller has those good aperture grilles anymore, save for that used CPD-E440 on Amazon.com. I spent almost an hour looking and thats all I could come up with .
