new monitor suggests, lcd vs trinitron

I am looking for a new monitor, and I am planning on buying one just after Christmas.

I currently go to school far enough away from home that I cannot take a monitor back and forth to school. At home I use a 21 inch dell trinitron. For the current semester of school (just ending), I have used a 17 inch generic crt. This week it quit displaying images at 85 hertz and now maxes out at 70 hertz at 1024x768. This is a problem for me because 70 hertz is low enough to give me a headache when using it for reading.

My past experiences with lcd monitors have not been good. Although the fastest one I have used is an 8 ms monitor, there was enough texture blurring to give me a headache. I found that when I spun quickly more than 90 degrees, the texture blur was bad enough that I could not tell what team my opponents were on. I found this texture blurring very distracting and a detriment to my playing.

Until recently, I had believed that lcd's could not hold a candle to trinitrons for serious gaming. With the new 2 ms monitors with what looks like a <5 ms gray to gray time, I am thinking about giving them a shot.

Here are some questions I have:
I am concerned that going back and forth between an lcd at school and a crt at home will give me headache or eye problems. Could someone who goes back an forth comment on this.
Is the texture blur still an issue for newer low latency lcds?
How does switching from a 5:4 to 4:3 monitor affect your gameplay?
Do new lcd monitors still have texture blurring issues (vs crt tearing issues)
Is there a way to run a 4:3 aspect ratio resolution on a 5:4 monitor without stretching the image?

Performance is the #1 concern. Cost is important but negotiable. Color quality is important but I do no photo editing so 6 bit vs 8 bit panels don't make a difference to me. I am not concerned with looks, power consumption, weight, footprint, text readability, or any onboard extras (speakers, usb, etc). I am not considering a widescreen monitor.

These are my three choices
A 19" or 21" trinitron which can do 120 hertz at 1024x768 (my preferred resolution)
Cost of between 80 and 120 dollars from a local monitor refurbishing company. Note that I can check the monitors for defects before I buy, so this is a relatively safe optioon.

A 19" samsung 940 lcd. 5:4 ratio means that playing at 1024x768 is not possible without stretching the image. Cost of roughly 250-275.

A 20 or 20.1 inch lcd with a 4:3 ratio. 1024x768 is possible and 1600x1200 may be an easier switch because the aspect ratio does not change. I am not sure on prices and model number on these because the lcd thread doesn't have much choice on this size and aspect ratio.

I recently got back to school and the 70 hertz is really bothering me. I still am unsure about which type of monitor to buy. Thinking about lcds, I am concerned mostly about texture blurring during fast movement and paying 150 dollars more than a trinitron. I am also looking for more information on lcd displays that run a 4:3 resolution. Nearly all of the displays in the sticky lcd thread are 5:4 or widescreen. I am not sure if this is the right time to switch or if I should give lcd technology another year.

Any input is appreciated.

There aren't too many 4:3 LCDs out there anymore. 17" and 19" are either 5:4 or widescreen, and then everything 24" and up is widescreen.

In the 20" - 23" range, it's a mix of 4:3 and widescreen.

I'm using a couple 2007FPs but I don't really do much gaming so can't really comment on the gaming performance of them.

I don't know if your previous monitor had DVI and Clear type, but if not, then perhaps LCDs have improved enough for you.

I'd suggest a 19" Hanns-G 194D LCD from PCConnection for $220 - $120 in rebates = $100 and see how that works for you. It:

* certainly would be easier to bring back (or back and forth) to school then a 19" or 21" Trinitron
* would cost about the same as a 19" or 21" Trinitron
* could easily be sold at school to recoup your investment if you don't like it
* any video card that can run a game @ 1024x768 should run it @ 1280x1024 with lowering settings too much
* frees up that much more deskspace that what you are using (I'd imagine that deskspace would be an important need for a student)
