A buddy of mine needs to get a new monitor. Well, new monitors. He wants a 2X 24" widescreens, but he doesn't know what to go with now that the Dell 2405 is discontinued. He looked at the 2407, but it seems like it's still having banding issues.

Background: He does professional work in graphics design and animation. CAD, Photoshop, 3ds max, maya, illustrator, and a little bit of World of Warcraft. Any ideas would be great! Thanks guys!

The 2407 never did have much banding since they disabled ACC in Desktop mode. They are probably speaking of the high contrast making gradations (discrete 256-level grayscale DVI) visible. VGA has an infinite grayscale while DVI does not (that might explain why it's less visible in VGA). They are saying vertical banding is not fixed but horizontal banding is. That doesn't really make any sense.

Banding is pretty much eliminated in Desktop mode but still very present in other modes...

However, I'd recommend your friend try to get a hold of 2405's if he can (much better for colour accuracy), or perhaps look into the new BenQ 24" screen.

1. Learn how to spell
2. Learn proper grammar.
3. Do not make recommendations that are stupid and/or that the OP would have NO interest in.
4. Realize that the 22in monitors have a native res of 1680x1050 and that a 24in LCD has a native res of 1920x1200. That is 30.6% MORE pixels. And obviously if the OP's friend is interested in TWO of the monitors, then he must care about his pixels.

Hehe..anyway

Best large photo monitor out is SDM-P234/B.. this monitor used to cost $1200 and now is only $650. Uses IPS which is hands down best Image quality, color and viewing angles of any LCD tech. What all the pro monitors are from APPLE, NEC HP etc/

I agree with that. If you don't mind 23", the SDM-P234 is very decent.

How about the Samsung 244T?

We had looked at the 244Ts, but heard there were lag issues. Your opinion?

My opinion is that I don't know enough yet to have an opinion

No stores in my area are stocking this monitor (and very few stock ANY 24" monitors)..

I almost purchased that monitor when I was in the market for a 23in LCD a while back. But I decided to upgrade myself to the more expensive Phillips 230W monitor ~$920ish at Newegg

Beautiful monitor, fast enough for my needs. Works fine for me in UT2004. Excellent hardware scaling engine. Oblivion at 1440x900 with 2xAA looked fabluous.

It supports three pixel scailing modes--Native Mode, Fill with Aspect and Full Screen.

Native Mode: No scaling!
Fill with Aspect: 4:3 resolutions will scale with black bars on each side, 16:9 will scale with black bars on the top and bottom. 16:10 will scale to the entire screen (doh).
Full Screen: Any non-native resolution will scale to all edges of the screen.

The back levels could be better but I'm happy with it and I consider it $920 well spent.

Oh and I totally adore the S-IPS panel's fantastic viewing angles. No substantial color distortion......at any angle.

Excellent choice Bulldog and even better because it's an overdriven IPS....but $300 xtra too. I guess I meant the Sony is the best price to performance big monitor out..no offense. Best overall 23+ yes I'd buy Philips too. however I've discussed this with xnight and almost did buy it.... stopping me in my tracks was the bezel looks pretty sad, I like the low profiles like NEC and Dell have....but of course that has nothing to do with IQ of what really matters.

Are you from Europe.. because in USA that model is designated as Philips 230WP7NS.

Here is a good user review and you may want to contribute your experiances too.
