New motherboard = CPU heat problems.

I recently put in a new ASUS Motherboard a CUV-4X to be exact, I upgraded it from a Tyan that worked just fine, but fried so I figured I'd switch to a better "brandname" like ASUS.

Low and behold, I have problems.

My old board never had problems with CPU heat, but this one does, massively so.

I run a P3-933 and it's not bad just sitting on the desktop running nothing, about 34c, but when I attempt to run a game, it flies up to 65-70c and forces the game to skip and jump so it's unplayable.

I'm not sure what to do about it, never had heating problems before.

I have no chasis fan, but for a test, I grabbed a large room fan, popped the side of the case off, and pointed it at my CPU's guts, it dropped the mobo temp (which has no problems, runs at a steady 30c always) to around 25c. But the processor barely budged maybe one or two degrees, and still heated up in games.

For CPU cooling, I have a fairly simple Antec fan/heatsink combo attached to it. And it's obviously not doing much for this mobo.

Needless to say, considering I have no real performance difference, and the massive heat problems, I won't be purchasing another ASUS board at this rate.

Any suggestions at ALL, hints, tips, whatever, any help you can give I would massively apprecaite.

Thanks very much.

.... It seems that you have the normal behavior for the Asus mobos with the
Via Apollo Pro 133A chipset...basically the hardware monitoring su*** big time..

I use to have a P3V4X and it was the same thing... I was very woried 'till I got
a digital thermistor and tested the heatsink temperature...under full load it was
around 35C while both motherboard monitor and asus probe were reading 60/70C....

Anyway a good heatsink/fan and thermal paste should avoid any problems.....

hummmm...I have a P3V4X and I believe my cpu temps to be pretty accurate. I've experimented with different coolers and could see differences under load.

Sparkles - Did you remove ALL traces of the old thermal pad or compound? If it's getting hot I would suspect that it's not tight enough, since that's the only thing that changed. Just get yourself a new cooler. I'm actually using a CoolerMaster for Athlon tburds on my 933...it works beautifully. The stock Intel h/s fan would run about 57°C under load and the CoolerMaster runs about 43°C under load.

Actually, your problem doesn't sound heat related to me. Normally, games will completely freeze when there's a heat or cpu overclocking issue, not studder. What version of the 4in1 drivers did you install? What video card/drivers are you using? What specific game gives you the problems?

Don't be quick to blame Asus. I've built hundreds of Asus based systems and they are great mobo's.

Well, I assumed it was heat, since when I entered a game, played for a few, then exited, the history in my ASUS Probe showed temps of 65-70c.

And I use the 4in1 4.24 drivers, although I've also tried the 4.27 and 4.30, no improvement with switching to either.

As for my card drivers, I have a Geforce 2 running on what I think is the 10.80's, I'm not sure, it could be the 6.50's, I switch occasionaly, the proble with me finding out is that I can't draw up my display window at all. When I click settings on the desktop for it, or display in the control panel, it loads for a second or so, then the hourglass dissapears and nothing is there, maybe you could offer some insight on that as well?

Oh, and I figured it might be a sharing problem, so I looked and there my Modem and Video card had the same IRQ, so I switched the PCI port for the modem, and it fixed the conflict, but the problem remains.

Only other sharing/conflict thing that may actually mean something in there is:

MEMORY ADDRESS 0xEE000000-OxEFEFFFFF VIA CPU TO AGP CONTROLLER
MEMORY ADDRESS 0xEE000000-OxEFEFFFFF NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS/GeForce 2 Pro

And I have little to no clue about that...

I still assume it may be heat, so where can I get a CoolerMaster, would I be able to snag one at BestBuy or OfficeMax or somewhere in town? Or do I hafta get one online, any specific model.

And thanks for the welcome and all your help!

Well, that temp is still BELOW the Intel max spec of 85°C for most cumines. If you like, I can sell you a CoolerMaster for $15 shipped if you have PayPal. PM if interested.

These questions may seem odd, but they are relevent- What versions of the following do you have: operating system, direct x, windows media player, and internet explorer? What programs are set to run at startup as viewed using MSCONFIG?

The latest version of the 4in1 is 4.31. For nvidia, the latest OFFICIAL version is 650. What are your AGP settings in BIOS? i.e. aperture size and mode.

hummmm...that memory address conflict is also suspect. Those do NOT normally overlap. Also, please list all your IRQ's.

I'm on Windows ME, my IE is 5.0, my DirectX is 8.0, and I don't use Windows Media Player.

And does your CoolerMaster come with the thermal paste and such?

It's the onboard monitoring that is wrong...it thinks is overheating so it
slows down the processor speed to lower the temperature....I've seen
this behaivor on two CUV4X and on my P3V4X...

On my P3V4X I solved the problem with a good cooler and a decent slot-1
adapter...you can test this by disabling the CPU temp. monitor in the
bios.....

With the CUV4X changing the slot adapter is not an option...so try some
thermal paste and better H/F or consider replacing the mobo.....

Thanks for all your help, I picked up some better gear at BestBuy today and solved the problem.

However, it didn't fix the game skipping issues, so I looked into it some more, and that issue is 100% sure from the video card heat.

Unlike the processor, which has always felt cool to the touch, I felt the back of my video card during a Tribes 2 match where the chipset resides on my GF2GTS (can't touch the front, it has a fan/heatsink combo on it) and it was sorching hot, it literally hurt to touch it, I could probably burn myself if I held my hand there.

Anything I can do to cool it down? The drivers and everything are fine, no sharing issues or anything like that.

The first thing I would try is shuffling some IRQ's. Do you use the com ports? If not, I would disable those in bios and get the modem off IRQ10 and onto IRQ 3 or 4. I would also pull all the cards, except sound, and try to get it over to IRQ5. The USB is better off on IRQ 10. Here's what you should shoot for (but this is NOT necessarily your problem):

IRQ 3 or 4 = modem (PCI SLOT 3)
IRQ 5 = sound (PCI SLOT 2)
IRQ 10 = USB
IRQ11 = vid card
PCI SLOT ONE SHOULD BE EMPTY!

This may take some effort, but it may resolve some of your I/O overlap, which MIGHT be part of the problem. You will have to use the bios, pci slot order and the "add one card at a time and reboot" method to get the IRQ's straight.

Since you're on DX8, you should update it to DX 8.0a from MS. Also, go ahead and install the 650 detonators and the Via 4.31 drivers...INSTALL THE VIA DRIVERS FIRST.

The coolermaster comes with a thermal pad. You just remove the film and go. It's an excellent h/s fan. If your mobo has a lot of room around the socket like the CUSL2-C, you can use the SUPER giant athlon coolermaster which is $4 more.

Let me know what's up...we'll keep trying. I'm focusing on helping you right now.

RE: Geforce heat, that's normal, they run SUPER hot. What I do on geforce systems I build is add a fan called a "system blower". This is perfect, it takes a PCI slot and I always leave PCI1 free which is right next to the AGP. The blower actually sucks heat right off the geforce and expells it out the back of the case. What's really cool is it fits so close, about 5mm from the GPU, so it's very effective. You can find these on the web, or, LOL, I can sell you one. They run $12 shipped.

So thats the reason why I always get kickout while I am playing a game. I have the asus board and I am running a p3 600 o/c to 800 and my tempature is about 95-100f. I usually leave both side of the case open and put a sixpack next the case with my fan blasting the 6pack and the case.

Thad, do you run a store or something?

I can just see a shady guy in a trench coat selling computer parts on the street.

I'll most likely buy one from you, PM me about it and we'll work out the details.

sparkles - LOL No, I don't run a store nor an internet biz. I'm just a guy that builds/sells PC's and parts locally "on-the-side". I've only made a few internet transactions. You can PM the Elite member "kranky" and/or "emjem" as a reference, I've sold them both RAM. HERE is my heatware eval, it's pretty small because I don't like dealing over the net much.

You need to enable your PM option!
