New Motherboard Issues (Asus P5B)

I just bought an Asus P5B board from Newegg, and after plugging everything into it and getting it going, I get a blue screen that flashes for a fraction of a second once Windows starts booting up. Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

It's not my hard-drive, that still works. I installed everything to the board and put my case back together and booted it up, and it always gets the blue screen when Windows is starting. The BIOS have all my information correct (correct processor, RAM, everything). I don't understand; is my motherboard defective? Thanks.

That's usually a memory issue -- as Windows puts a load on the system booting up, the memory fails, causing the blue "memory dump" screen. Check to make sure your sticks are fully seated in their correct (check the manual) slots. P5B boards are very picky when it comes to RAM, especially the voltage, which has to be 1.8v. Make sure the timings and voltage are correct in your bios, compared to the Manufacturer's specs for those sticks. Check the Qualified Vendor's List (QVL) to make sure your sticks are on it. Some RAM just won't work with the P5B. Post your system specs back, if you continue having trouble. MM

Is that a fresh install of WinXP or just an old install (from another MB) i.e. wrong drivers = blue screen. Also check and reseat memory, video cables etc.

I don't think the OP is getting the traditional BSOD, but instead a page fault error right as Windows begins to load. It usually flashes for a second, then causes a reboot.

But you are correct, I've seen it happen when you try to move a copy of Windows from one computer directly to another.

Ekim101: if that's the case, you need to get a hold of an XP install disc, preferably your own, boot from it, go through setup until you get to the window where install finds an existing copy of Windows, then select "Repair" from the menu at the bottom. You'll have to install drivers for the new m/b, gpu, etc., plus go through all the Windows updates, including service packs, because the repair wipes them all out. It should still maintain all of your other files and installations. There's always a few "hiccups" with this method, which is why a clean install would be better.

I have Vista installed, which is a problem? I mean I already have a computer and whatnot, I'm just switching out my motherboard (my previous one only has RAM speeds of 533MHz capable; I really want more than that).

It says before it reaches the memory dump that I should "Repair my computer". Would that fix it? Also, I read the manual for it and I had the memory in the right slots. But for reference, here are some of my specs:

Pentium Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz (No OC)
EVGA nVidia 8800GTS 320 MB
Windows Vista
2 Gigs of 800MHz Corsair RAM

My two roomates here in college assure me it isn't my hard-drive or any of the drivers, which is really the only thing that makes sense to me. I would assume you need the drivers and such to have Vista recognize the motherboard or else it breaks. Am I far off in my assumption?

As previously suggested: please tell us if the Vista installation is from another computer or if you've installed it from CD in your new system. If it's not a new installation it would be a good idea to install a fresh copy of Vista or at leat do a repair install.

It was brand new. Tell you what, I'm just going to RMA it for a new one, then if it does the same thing I'll work with the Vista repair disc and whatnot.
