Looks like a solid option for anyone who wants a decent Android phone with a smaller (4.3" in this case) screen size.

Only the screen resolution is still a mystery, most likely 960 x 540 or 800 x 480.
Will be interesting to see how well they can make it run (over time) with only 4GB of NAND and a dual-core A7. But the battery life should be really solid.

Ideally it should be $99, more realistically 119$, but we can expect some great deals with the prepaid packages I guess (like with the Moto G).
Quick 8GB Moto G vs. Moto E:
8GB NAND = 4GB nand + SD
1GB RAM = 1 GB RAM
4.5" 720p > 4.3 (I expect less then 720p)
front facing camera > N/A
Flash light > N/A
Snapdragon 400 (4 x A7 + Adreno 305) > Snapdragon 200 (2 x A7 + Adreno 302)

Right now the Lumia 520 is the (unlocked) smartphone to get for around $99, but now it looks like Android will have a really viable option in that price range as well; and with the more established Android ecosystem, I expect it to do quite well.

Moto G is already $80-$100 for some MVNO carriers. I understand that it is not the 'unlocked' version, but this Moto E looks like another level lower spec-wise so it should be lower than that to be a success.

That seems rather low. The linked article says they expect 720p. A few years ago that might have sounded fancy, it's hardly earth-shattering today. Also, Motorola has used a 4.3" 720p screen before in the Droid Mini and the Droid 5 is rumored to use the same, so they probably have some spare screens of that type around.

It's a phone designed for the low-end, they wouldn't take out the flash light if they wouldn't look for ever penny. On top of that the higher resolution would slow down the budget SoC.

We will see on the 13, who get's the "bragging" rights ()

That's what's confusing... Why did you post this here? It's a typical boring budget phone with nothing special going for it from what I see. Hundreds of phones like this exist and we've ignored them all. Why bring this one up out of all the other budget phones?

Maybe because Motorola was the first to do an affordable Android phone right, so we are interested if they can do a cheap one too.

Personally, I really want to see how well can they make Android work on that hardware.

Available in India tonight for Rs 6,999, as I said about $120. But I noticed that the Moto G 8GB is about $210 in India, so there is still the possibility for the 99$ mark for the USA.
It's still unclear what is the resolution of the screen.

I think the "E" is for Emerging Markets.

This is beyond wonderful. Motorola Mobility, a company who has made little headway - with mixed efforts - in the global market at large, is finally beginning to see the road leading out from an American-dominated market.

I want them to succeed - hopefully they don't feel the need to start working on a billion more phone models though. Moto E, Moto G, Moto X, and the upcoming Moto 360, with annual or thereabout refreshes, will serve Motorola (and now Lenovo) more than they could ever dream. I wouldn't doubt if they throw a tablet or two in there, which, with the new, non-Verizon approach, they could see much better results.

I'm still surprised how fast the Moto G feels. I used one as a daily driver for a month before going to the Moto X.

TBH I thought of the OnePlus One as just one more phone in the market that's trying to do the same thing everyone else is doing, but look where we've come since then?

I hope that's wrong, I need a 64 GB card if I want to carry my music collection even in MP3 format. There are no 320 GB cards yet so FLAC isn't an option
