so based on a rumor you will start a fanboy thread aimed at trolling?

Look, without a doubt the next Nexus 7 will be better than Apple's offering. The iPad mini was a counter to the Nexus 7. You would expect the next generation to be better.

With that said I'd like to see a few things addressed by Google:

- Haptic feedback
- Front AND rear camera (both improved)
- Thinner device. The Nexus 7 is just plain fat.
- Same form factor. So if the screen goes up, it better be at the expense of the bezel.
- LED notification light. It's nice on the Nexus 10
- Better screen: 720p won't kill me, but I would prefer 1080p. More than anything I want good colors and not washed out screen that uses dithering...
- 16/32gb options at the minimum. Would like to see a 64gb, but who knows... the better solution would be to allow SD cards, but we know that's not happening...

I would've expected the Mini to be better than the current N7, yeah.

In some ways, it is: it has a rear camera (and a decent one, at that), a bigger screen, a thinner body... and of course, a much better selection of tablet-native apps.

The Nexus 7 sequel will probably be dandy, but heaven help Google if the iPad mini gets a Retina display.

What do you mean 'if'? That's what Apple wants to do with every device. Throw in a high res display, then throw the marketing term Retina so people think 'omg, it's going to be so awesome'.

At a low enough price point, I think Google can definitely pull out ahead of the pack with a new Nexus 7. I mean think about the other options out there in the low cost (Android) tablet market. You really only have a handful that are even decent yet still cost nearly the same as a Nexus 7. I think this one will shut up all other tablet makers or finally make them step up their game.

Looking forward to seeing what Key Lime Pie brings. I'm gonna keep waiting on hardware for the next Transformer though.

Maybe this means I can grab a used N7 for cheap...? The Resale price on them seem to be pretty good so far.

no kidding, the current iPad Mini is a joke. Extremely low PPI and iPad 2 specs at $330+??? Small tablets need high PPI. Apple of all people should know this. Sexy bezel along does not justify premium price.

I am excited for the new Nexus 7.

I see the iPad Mini as their interim product. They had to rush it out to battle the smaller tablet market regardless of specs.

They'll definitely have it fixed and much better when the new one comes out later this year.

I'm going to agree with this. I don't think the original iPad Mini is the product Apple really wanted to put out there but had to.

I think they wanted to establish the $330 price, even with an underspecd tablet, because if they released the Mini at $230, then released a much upgraded model this year for $330,
The talk would be about how Apple has raised the prices on the iPad Mini as opposed to how improved the new version is. They wanted to set the expectation of the $330 price point. This years Mini will probably be a lot closer to what they wanted to launch but couldn't.

It's Apple. They released the mini with it's current specs knowing that it'll sell just because....It's Apple.

When a new version comes out it'll sell to those who waited and for those who didn't....It's the Apple way of doing things.

better speakers, SD card > front facing camera.
higher resolution screen or its DOA

love the Nexus 7 size and form factor for portability.

I completely agree, but I'm saying that the Mini was rushed like bearxor said. Apple had to put the product out or else they'd lose market share and potential customers. They needed to put something out and push it out as fast as possible. The easiest way was more than likely to use the older parts which ends up getting it produced a lot faster which ends up meeting demand instead of putting a strain on themselves by releasing something that isn't anywhere close to being ready to be released.

You're right though. When Apple releases the updated version this year, people will buy it whether they had the previous generation or if it's the new one they waited for.

A couple points.

- Rear camera on a tablet, imho, is idiotic. Do people really like taking pictures of their crotch all day long?
- Thinner? Why? There is absolutely nothing bulky about the N7 unless you happen to have tiny leprechaun hands or something.
- Speculation is that they'll be bumping it up to 1080p. Being a screen real estate whore myself, and having spent the past week on vacation doing things like writing a resume, browsing, doing server admin stuff, etc., on my N7, more screen real estate would be welcome.
- SD card yes please. Please yes please! Who's dick do I have to suck to get that feature added?

Please put better speakers on it

^^^ This x EleventyBillion. The speakers on the N7 are mediocre at best, and horribly positioned too.

NEEDING a rear camera on a tablet is very dumb, BUT...

Having recently left retail computer sales, customer think they HAVE TO HAVE IT! Even when you tell them that and decent phone camera is better, and they look dumb holding a tablet taking pictures, they still "need" it.
It a selling point and until someone comes along and tells people that you don't need a rear camera on a tablet(like apple did with the DVD drive), people will demand it

Op - do define "eating their lunch". Android tablets have had superior specs to their Apple counterparts plenty of times in the past, only to be left distantly behind in sales.

I'm not going to go take pictures with the Nexus 7, but some people do. However, more important to me is Google Hangouts and being able to video chat with the phone. It's the same reason why we have front cameras on our phones and rear cameras. I know it took some time for the front camera to become standard in the US, but the 2 camera solution has been around forever.

- Thinner? Why? There is absolutely nothing bulky about the N7 unless you happen to have tiny leprechaun hands or something.

Why not? The Nexus 7 is 10.6mm, the Nexus 10 is 8.9mm. iPad 2 is 8.8mm. iPad mini is 7.2mm. I'm not saying go thinner than the iPad, but go thinner. The Kindle Fire HD is 9.4mm. They can shave 1mm off easily. Otherwise, yes the Nexus 7 is on the fat side.

- Speculation is that they'll be bumping it up to 1080p. Being a screen real estate whore myself, and having spent the past week on vacation doing things like writing a resume, browsing, doing server admin stuff, etc., on my N7, more screen real estate would be welcome.

But if 1080p just means smaller text, that's not that big of a benefit. Sharper sure.

lol dream on

I guess they're not great, but do you guys blast music on your N7s? I don't, so I guess I don't mind that much.

Ignorant posts. I showed you the thickness of competing devices. The Nexus 7 is fat. The only device that's fatter is the original iPad at 13mm.

Android tablet's market share is predicted to pass up Apple's this year.

Nexus 7 is 10.45mm, not 10.6mm (unless Google is lying to me). Could it be thinner? Sure. Should it be thinner? Sure, why not? Is it too thick? Not at all. The Surface Pro is an example of too thick.
