Impacted sure, but fall off a cliff? 7" is great for reading and portability, but plenty of people will remain attracted to the 10" form factor. Many will still prefer the extra screen real estate, more powerful hardware, larger battery, etc.... I think 10" makes more sense for those trying to replace traditional laptops with a tablet.

Pretty much what I am thinking of doing, if they release an iPad Mini with Retina. I would dump the iPad asap. Though with Nexus 7 2013, I might do that anyway.

However, some people will buy simply because of the fruit on the back.

Releasing new products without regard to the possibility of them cannibalizing the sale of their old products is one of the reasons Apple has succeeded. If they change that policy, the are going to end up a stagnant dinosaur like Microsoft, because others are going to be releasing higher definition displays on smaller tablets as seen by the new Nexus 7.

The new nexus 7 has a great screen and SoC. The only thing is that its physical shape is awkward. It's definitely the best bang for buck though.

Have you used it? My old Xyboard 8.2" had relatively small uniform bezels that most people think are better but I actually like the feel of the Nexus much more.

Dunno, but I expect I'll probably but the Air in a couple years once it does get a retina display. And I've never owned anything Apple. Though I don't see myself buying an iPad probably ever, but mostly because I don't use my Nexus enough to justify the cost. I still greatly prefer a small light laptop for casual use (like my 11.6" acer).

I find the determination to compare the Nexus 7 against the existing iPad mini a bit odd. Surely folks here know that the iPad mini is likely to be replaced in several weeks, right? Retina + an A6 is my guess, and that would make the iPad technically superior, since it'd have a slightly higher resolution and potentially edge out the S4 Pro in the Nexus 7 (the A6 generally outperformed the S4 Pro last year, if only slightly).

Lot of assumptions there - on performance, specs and release date.

Reports are that if there even is a Retina iPad mini, it will be coming in Q4, meaning not until the end of the year.

The S4 Pro is pretty comparable to the A6, since the A6 only has a dual core CPU. The S4 in phones throttled a lot; in Tablets I believe less so. Do you mean A6 or A6X? Because a Retina ipad mini would probably need A6X for good performance since it will have the same resolution as the iPad 4.

Yeah. It's tough. We've come to a point where most computers are fast enough. People won't care that you get quad core in an MBP or a better graphics card.

Hell as an enthusiast I think most of my needs are satisfied by an MBA. So yeah, I'd like a rMBA, as I have no need for the increased features of the rMBP, but this is a dilemma for Apple. I just wish I had a crystal ball that could tell me whether its worth waiting for 2014 for an MBA purchase because my old MBP is seriously feeling like shit now. Oh and I hate working on my work laptop that takes 5 minutes to boot up with those damn mechanical drives

Is there something else about these Retina displays beyond the high pixel density because the PPI difference between the 2013 Nexus 7 and calculated 2048x1536 display at 7.9" is a whopping...1.

Note: According to an engineer in the thread, it is not possible to fix this in software. It's a design choice (not flaw per se but a conscious choice) to use crap parts, knowing this would be a problem, but hoping most would not notice it.

I wonder if Google knew this up front, or if the conscious choice was mainly Asus's.

Only when it's products with better margins. The iPad has better margins than their Macs. The iPhone has far better margins than their iPods. It's when you get into people wanting the iPad mini and "cheap" iPhone that Apple may run into problems because they start having to do the same math other companies do: sell more products at a lower margin in order to grow revenue.

And unlike before, there's clear competition in these new markets.

Well yesterday was my birthday and the wife was sitting there listening to me talking about how "nice" the new Nexus 7 seemed to be ... so she got me the 32gb version lol. Still playing with it. Need to find a nice slim case for it now. I've been out of the android scene for a while since I also have an iPad 4. So naturally I'll have some questions, like launcher recommendations, tweaks, etc. I've noticed all my music hasn't ported over, only some. Best keyboard?

Anyway, its melted butter fast. Screen is awesome and the speakers seem decent. Gonna take awhile to get it all figured out.

Swiftkey seems to be the defacto flagship keyboard for Android. I've always Launcherpro on my phone, haven't used a non-stock launcher on my nexus though

I have this cover for my 2012 nexus, and I love it. Nice clasp, smart screen wake, 3 different angles to prop in landscape, handstrap, and elastic strap to "lock" it open when using the hand strap, and doesn't add much to the thickness compared to some cases I've seen. You can't set it up in portrait though, if you're wanting to do that

I use Nova Launcher although stock launcher is nice too. I use stock keyboard. As for tweaks, I just run stock on Nexus devices. Google is pretty good with software.

The MoKo Slim-Fit Folio is the best Nexus 7 case, but I don't know if it's available for the new Nexus 7 yet.

I like Google's Keyboard, but SwiftKey has better prediction, and Swype has better swiping. But it's only a matter of time before Google surpasses both in each area.

i got to play with a friend's nexus 7 today and i was truly impressed. super slim! just when i thought it couldnt get smaller, it feels razor thin.
it is definitely much more portable than an ipad mini because the nexus easily fitted in my short.
