Yeah, the bezel definitely looks weird. Hopefully its because the speakers are on the front?

I think the old one looks better tbh but this is a day one for me. I'm not keen on devices keeping the same size screen and getting bigger, that's pretty odd. Hope it's more durable than the last too.

Hopefully performance is at least up to current standards as the original sucked. Also let's hope the screen isn't washed out like before either. Other than that the original was great, fix those and I'm sold 100%

I never pulled the trigger on the first one even though I wanted to as I see the 7" tablet as the perfect couch companion if I don't need full blow PC capabilities.

This will be a day one for me, just wish they'd up the storage $229 should be for the 32gb, we all know going from 16->32gb is pennies on the dollar.

Wow bezel. Looks like that thing is about 1/3 bezel 2/3 screen. Will definitely need to see one of these in person first.

The speaker was also really weak.

I know people keep saying "but for the money it was a good deal", but I wasn't impressed with the original Nexus 7. Out of the box performance was poor, though a different rom helped that out a ton. It was my first taste of a Nexus device but based on that first impression I won't touch another Nexus until it drops in price. I don't know if this was specific to the nexus 7 or not, but it seems like they pump out firmware updates quickly without regard to the device... so it just turns out unoptimized and clunky. The rom I used flied compared to the stock vanilla rom, which is embarrassing AFAIC.

So, couple that with the fact that this thing looks like it has even BIGGER bezels than before and well... you guys can keep it. I love me new gadgets but I don't have much desire for this thing.

The whole bezel thing is fine if they're going to deliver a thin product. However, the N7 had bezels and was relatively thick. It was thicker than most if not all competing tablets.

Yeah, nothing I've read on this really screams "great" to me. It'll be the launch platform for 4.3, obviously, but the whole thing screams cheap to me.

Which is to be understood, as I'd expect it to sell for $200 or less. It'll be nice to have a spec bump to a newer processor though. The Tegra in the N7 was a bit long in the tooth from the moment the N7 came out.

1920x1200 resolution display on a 7 inch screen. That is 323, higher than the iPad 4 and Nexus 10. I think it's the highest tablet DPI available.

The rear has stereo speakers on each side of the tablet. Already a step up and I haven't even heard them. Hopefully sound quality will be better and louder this time.

It sounds like this most likely has a S4 Pro processor. Shame it's not the S600. But my understanding is the difference is pretty small. And the S4 Pro is still a pretty good processor.

I'm pretty excited. Just hope there are no manufacturing screws up (loose left glass) and Google actually has them calibrate the colors somewhat on the displays (some colors look pretty washed out on the original Nexus 7).

Oh and the bezel may not be as bad as it looks. It appears the portrait bezel has gotten even smaller than the original Nexus 7. And I think this makes the other bezel look more significant. I think it'll be fine.

Guys, you actually do need that bezel to hold the tablet comfortably in portrait. Going nearly completely bezel-less is very much in the design ideology of form over function.

They could have removed the rear facing camera entirely though, those have no place in tablets. Use the bezel space for a better front facing camera to make video calls/chat/hangouts look better and/or use front facing speakers.

I'm hearing they've nixed the 8GB model from this lineup, starting with 16GB as a base. Kinda annoying that we've been stuck at 16GBs for base models for years now when flash memory is pennies. Easy profit, though, I suppose. Charge an extra 30-100 dollars for a nickels worth of hardware.

And lets be honest, I'm sure the #1 thing that everyone wants is NAND that doesn't suck. Lets hope Google brought Asus to task on that.

Brian kin of at spend an entire page comparing s4 pro (six month old high end) compared to the 1.7 ghz s600 (the current high end) here

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6747/htc-one-review/11

in integer, floating point, and memory benchmarks it is not even close. most of the time showing greater than 40% improvement.

According to qualcomm we should see 25 to 30% improvement in real world performance

The Nexus 7 doesn't target the high end, it targets value. I think the S4 Pro is a good compromise for price vs performance?

I like the rear camera. It's useful for webcamming. I don't expect some award winning camera, but it'd be nice to have a decent shooter in there for some quick snaps. I used my N10 yesterday at the airport for example just to take photos of some drunk idiot in Las vegas. Why bother reaching for my phone when I'm already reading on my tablet? I also took a selfie (yes dumb I know) because my gf passed out on my shoulder in a very unattractive manner. I had to send send that to my friend who was at another gate waiting for her flight.

I'm not suggesting the rear camera be used for photos like a phone, but its still useful. Those camera modules are dirt cheap, and if the iPad can accomplish it with minimal bezel and thickness why can't the N7?

I'm also kinda worried about the battery. Knowing that the S4 Pro on the N4 is a power hog and also gets throttled, this new device profile sounds like it might throttle as well? Who knows.

I think the rear camera encourages people to take pictures with it, something that should be avoided. Do you have any idea how stupid people look at concerts, malls, museums, etc, taking pictures with their iPads?

iPad = 500 dollar tablet, Nexus 7 = ~230 dollar tablet.

Lets hope thats another kink they got ironed out with more polished manufacturing and improved drivers.

I've been waiting for this for way too long. I hope there is no battery drain issue.

I will never use the rear camera. It's a dumb move for a tablet. It will strictly be used in the "office" and travel, so I hope the audio DAC circuit is decent. Hope it sounds decent with my Etymotics.

It makes no sense from a cost perspective to use the older s4 pro instead of the newer s600.

According to Isuppli, the bom of the s4 pegs the s600 at 20 dollars that means the chip cost of the better chip is less than 10% of the final item price.

The reason to go with the s4 pro is either time to market or being nice to the other OEMS allowing them to have better products at a significant markup to allow said OEMS to make a profit, and to keep said OEMS happy.

Even an S4 Pro compared to other Android tablets in the same price range blows them out of the water. S600 would be overkill.

Sorry but the iPad mini disagree with you.
The size of the ipad mini is about as perfect as it get and it doesn't all that bezels.
That is an ugly tablet.
I had both the N7 and the mini and even factoring in the price $329 vs $249(16gb), the Mini is a better buy.
They needed to make the N7 as small as it can be or make an N8 around the size of the mini and I would make the switch.
If Apple release the new Mini with the high res. any where around $350, thats where my money goes.

In my fantasy land Google would've had Sharp manufacture this new Nexus 7 using the Aquos Pad SH08E as a base.
