New Nexus 7 thread

Sorry but the iPad mini disagree with you.
The size of the ipad mini is about as perfect as it get and it doesn't all that bezels.
That is an ugly tablet.
I had both the N7 and the mini and even factoring in the price $329 vs $249(16gb), the Mini is a better buy.
They needed to make the N7 as small as it can be or make an N8 around the size of the mini and I would make the switch.
If Apple release the new Mini with the high res. any where around $350, thats where my money goes.

I kinda think the bezel really isn't as bad as people think. We went through this with the first Nexus 7 and once I had it in my hand I thought the bezels were fine and didn't look as big as it seemed in the pictures.

Our minds might be playing a little bit of a trick because of the aspect ratio and one set of bezels being so thin while the other is kinda normal sized.

In my fantasy land Google would've had Sharp manufacture this new Nexus 7 using the Aquos Pad SH08E as a base.

Now thats a good looking 7" tablet.

Guys, you actually do need that bezel to hold the tablet comfortably in portrait. Going nearly completely bezel-less is very much in the design ideology of form over function.

Reminds me of car mockups with ridiculously low profile tyres.

1920x1200 (or 1080) screen for $230 is a pretty good deal. Wonder if they also upped the general build quality.

Yeah my only gripe with the tablet is the bezels, I think they definitely could have been thinner as seen with the Aquos Pad.

Guys, you actually do need that bezel to hold the tablet comfortably in portrait. Going nearly completely bezel-less is very much in the design ideology of form over function.

They could have removed the rear facing camera entirely though, those have no place in tablets. Use the bezel space for a better front facing camera to make video calls/chat/hangouts look better and/or use front facing speakers.

I'm hearing they've nixed the 8GB model from this lineup, starting with 16GB as a base. Kinda annoying that we've been stuck at 16GBs for base models for years now when flash memory is pennies. Easy profit, though, I suppose. Charge an extra 30-100 dollars for a nickels worth of hardware.

And lets be honest, I'm sure the #1 thing that everyone wants is NAND that doesn't suck. Lets hope Google brought Asus to task on that.

I think they could definitely take those side bezels and go with that thickness all the way around. the top and bottom bezels of my HTC One are perfectly sized, why does a ~7" tablet need bezels WAY bigger? It doesn't.

Nothing wrong with the bezel here. I understand it "looks" better with a slimmer bezel, but that's not a big deal to me because I think the current N7 looks and functions perfectly fine.

You mean the really thin bezels need to be made larger? The idea is that it's narrow enough you can just wrap your hand around the back.

I think he means the other way, using it horizontally you would want the wider bezel to hold on to, vertically I agree the tablet is thin enough to hold in one hand around the back.

Best Buy apparently is taking pre orders already, $230 for 16Gb and $270 for 32Gb.

Yeah I don't understand it either. The Nexus 7 was easy to hold from the back, you could basically use it like a large phone with no issue. I think cost cutting is the reason why the bezels are not thinner than they are.

Look, I get its a great price for a great spec tablet.
I've had the N7 and loved it but once the Mini came out I loved it more.
You figured after 1 year, they would improve on the form factor.
The specs are better but thats given a year later.
Not only did they didn't improve on the form factor, they made the top and bottom bezels bigger.
You figure if they can do something in like with the Mini(thin and little bezels) in a 7" form, they can really compete with the Mini given its >$100 cheaper.

I was really hoping for the haptic feedback and the Snapdragon 600.

The buttons are software, but can't you enable haptic feedback on them like you can with the keyboard? I always disable any haptic feedback so I'm not sure of this.

Sorry I think I meant vibration motor... It seems the device lacks it altogether. I have mixed feelings about haptic feedback for the keyboard, but in terms of having vibrating notifications, etc, I'd like that. I appreciated it greatly on my N10 at least.

Yeah yeah I get it its a cheap tablet, but a vibration motor is a few pennies anyway I'm pretty sure.

That's my guess. I assume it's easier to design something with more bezels around the edges (more room for internal components too). I don't think it's a coincidence that all the cheap devices you see tend to have thicker bezels.
