So between my laptop and phone, why would I want this? Saw the picture of it in the guy's hand and can't see why I'd have such a need for a few more inches of screen space.

When your phone is only a few inches, a "few more inches" is actually a lot. Makes a big difference for videos, books, and especially web browsing.

Last I checked my laptop won't fit in my jacket pocket. I'd rather take my tablet out and about with me.

1920x1200 resolution display on a 7 inch screen. That is 323, higher than the iPad 4 and Nexus 10. I think it's the highest tablet DPI available.

The rear has stereo speakers on each side of the tablet. Already a step up and I haven't even heard them. Hopefully sound quality will be better and louder this time.

It sounds like this most likely has a S4 Pro processor. Shame it's not the S600. But my understanding is the difference is pretty small. And the S4 Pro is still a pretty good processor.

I'm pretty excited. Just hope there are no manufacturing screws up (loose left glass) and Google actually has them calibrate the colors somewhat on the displays (some colors look pretty washed out on the original Nexus 7).

^ wow I already forgot about that! I had to return one N7 and RMA another because of the loose glass problem! Then my third N7 died after 3 months (wouldn't turn on even when holding the different button combinations). Too bad, it was a great tablet otherwise!

It's a fantastic size for mobile gaming and reading ebooks. Also nice for surfing the web on the go, if you can use your phone like a mobile hot spot. I like the backlight and color vs. a regular Kindle. I do prefer my 10" ipad for reading web pages and magazines, though.

This is pretty impressive. I'm going to wait to see if there are any glitches but I might finally have something to replace the Touchpad.

Chromekey time!

Edit: Err, Chromecast, that is.

Nice it turns your TV on and switches to the right input automatically.

If this thing doesn't do local streaming (from the device) then it misses out on half the potential use.

Maybe I'm just an idiot but I still prefer to do things "the old way." The new ways seem to offer ease of use for the average Joe, but I don't see how its any different. Like Dropbox and SugarSync are really glorified FTPs. That's it. I can upload to my FTP without worrying about limited space.

I still prefer plugging in my laptop to the TV and using VGA out.

Am I really missing out by not joining this revolution of new streaming devices like a Roku, etc?

Even disregarding VGA's antiquity (and the additional audio cable needed), having a 10' UI and a simple remote is well worth it for streaming services.

Right, but you're tied to streaming services and all that right? I have a NAS with plenty of music and videos. It'd be nice to just play all that through my tablet onto my TV? Is that Miracast? Unfortunately I have an older TV so looks like I'm screwed.

Anyway, that's why connecting a powerful device like a laptop works well for me. All these newer devices force you do things their way, meaning running special software, use streaming services, etc, and offline content seems to be an issue.

Err nothing is stopping you from connecting these devices just like you would your laptop. They have the additional benefit of being wireless and more mobile.

Chromecast is running a stripped version of ChromeOS. I imagine there are plenty of people just waiting to get theirs in the mail so they can begin testing out local media streaming apps.

If they can fit XBMC or something as fully featured, I might not need to pull the trigger on an HTPC, and just focus on the NAS.

EDIT: I guess the bulk of the XBMC-alike would be on the remote control device, and the (web)app would feed Chromecast the local address of your files. The device itself might need some work of its own in regards to codecs, unless that's easily handled by the NAS or serving device.

Didn't they say Amazon would be selling the Chromecast this afternoon? I still don't see it yet. I don't want to buy it from Google Play because the cheap shipping will take 2 weeks and they charge a fortune for 2 day air.

Well, more $$$ than I was hoping for. 16gb still useless and 270 for 32gb version is a rip. May look into a Nook HD or Asus Memo HD or something like that. that bezel looks like ass and makes it look cheezy.

wasn't the 1st gen N7 $250 for 16GB at launch?
so we have better specs all around for less money and people still aren't happy...

I think the ASUS is a good value for it's $150 price. But I also think the new Nexus 7 is a very good value at it's $270 price too. You get a much faster processor, a higher DPI screen, twice the RAM, and stereo speakers.

And I would be scared of just how slow of eMMC memory ASUS uses for a budget tablet when they use some pretty crappy stuff in their high end tablets.
