I can replicate my GPS issue.

Using GPS Test, it locks immediately after a fresh reboot. However, if I turn off GPS and turn it back on, the GPS refuses to lock.

Anyone else seeing this issue?

This is the only issue I am having. It appears to be software related. The screen is absolutely gorgeous. Anandtech's mini review rates it higher than iPad mini's screen. Bonus on the processor being Snapdragon 300 (not 200 like N4) which is really just a binned 600.

Being better than the ipad mini screen is not an accomplishment, and just goes to show why we need to stop comparing this stuff to Apple.

I think there's 2 things that go into screen rating: dpi and colors. He's talking about colors because the Nexus 7 gets a great screen calibration that outdoes the iPad mini. Of course it outdoes the mini in terms of dpi--didn't take a genius to figure that one out.

I'm glad one of the main complaints of Nexus devices has been resolved--color calibration. Let's hope Google keeps this up for the next Nexus 4 and 10, because all of 2012's Nexii really looked terrible because of the washed out screen colors.

Which is interesting since the Optimus G which is basically the exact same phone has great colors.

Indeed. The iPad Mini's display was outdated and outclassed when it launched, compared to the original Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD, and Nook HD. Comparing it to the new Nexus 7 is like beating a dead horse deader.

To be fair, the NN7's screen compares well even to the iPad 4 even if it only exceeds it in the ppi metric.

Once again more BS from you. The Nexus 7 had a great display on paper but the calibration was so bad and the colors were so washed out it's instantly obvious. Look at the threads about the N7 versus iPad or N10 versus iPad. All of Google's products last year were released with HORRIBLE calibrations.

"Outdated and outclassed" are just your words because you're using a single metric--ppi. Honestly, I don't get it. Ppi might be amusing at first, but what's far important and noticeable EVERYDAY when I use my Nexus 10 is the bad colors. I'm not saying go back to non-retina, but I'd rather have a minor sacrifice in ppi than to have some terrible colors. 1280x800 versus 1024x768 at a 7" tablet space really isn't a clear cut victory, so stop acting like the N7 was some sort of heavyweight champ and the iPad Mini had no chance. I wonder what sales numbers say....

i find it hard to believe there's still no gps!

There’s GNSS (GPS+GLONASS) on the WiFi only model.

this is confusing because the engadget review didnt mention any and neither does google.
i remember now.. the old nexus 7 has gps. but cant find any mention of gps for the 2013 version

Someone @XDA compared black levels.

And whites (more like temperatures)

Higher PPI tends to give more "creamy" looking whites so that needs to be taken account, I think. But in this shot, iPad mini's white looks more neutral. (then again, I thought similarly about AMOLED v. LCD as well)

BTW, thank you zerocool84 for pointing me toward the engadget review. It is at least one data point wrt USB OTG. I prefer, though, a first-hand testimony.

Another big unknown that is important to me is whether the headphone jack can double as mic-in. If not, whether the Bluetooth supports mics. There was no way of using mics, so you could not use headsets to talk (for voice search, dictation, or chat, etc.) on the N7 2012.

The great thing about a Nexus device is that you can take matters into your own hands. Color calibration is easily within the realm of your control if you so choose.

http://www.displaymate.com/iPad_mini_ShootOut_1.htm

iPad mini Conclusions:
The iPad mini is certainly a very capable small Tablet, but it does not follow in Apple’s tradition of providing the best display, or at least a great display – it has just a very capable display. What’s more, the displays on existing mini Tablets from Amazon and Google outperform the iPad mini in most of our Lab tests as documented below in the Shoot-Out Comparison Table. Some of this results from constraints within the iPad product line, and some to realistic constraints on display technology and costs, but much of it is due to a number of poor choices and compromises.

Lower Screen Resolution:
Many people were expecting a Retina Display like the new iPad 3, but that would have required a 326 Pixels Per Inch display with more than 4 times the screen area of the iPhone 5. That is currently out of the question for both cost and manufacturing volume and yield since it would need to be Low Temperature Polysilicon. Given that Apple has been sticking with either 1024x768 or 2048x1536 iPad displays for compatibility reasons, that meant the iPad mini had to be 1024x768 with 163 Pixels Per Inch. But that’s now considered to be rather on the low side, especially given that the $199 Amazon Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7 both have considerably sharper displays with 216 Pixels Per Inch. So Apple, the inventor of Retina Display marketing, now has a significant competitive shortfall on this very issue…

Improving Screen Sharpness:
Apple could have increased the iPad mini Screen Resolution in the same way as it did for the iPhone 5 – simply having older Apps running Letterboxed inside a higher resolution display, which would have been a great way to provide a higher Pixels Per Inch display. iOS and newer Apps would have used the full higher Resolution – that didn’t happen. While screen Resolution gets lots of attention from both consumers and marketers – it’s really only critical for providing visually sharp text – but that applies for most applications running on a Tablet. As we have pointed out a number of times, the best way to increase visual text sharpness on any display is by using Sub-Pixel Rendering, which Apple should now implement in order for the iPad mini to become competitive on visual sharpness…

Viewing Widescreen Content:
All of the iPads have a 4:3 Aspect Ratio screen, rather than the 16:10 or 16:9 Aspect Ratios found on most other Tablets. One advantage of the iPad’s more square 4:3 screen shape is that it lends itself better for use in both Landscape and Portrait viewing modes. Another is that a 4:3 screen is often better suited for reading because it has the same Aspect Ratio as content on 8.5x11 inch documents. But another major application for mini Tablets is viewing widescreen video content with Aspect Ratios of 16:9 (and higher for many movies). On the iPad mini 16:9 content is viewed Letterboxed with only 1024x576 Resolution, which is getting pretty close to Standard Definition video rather than true High Definition 1280x720 video on most other mini Tablets like the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7. A much better screen resolution choice for the iPad mini would have been 1280x960, because it could then deliver true HD video content, satisfactory Letterboxing for older 1024x768 Apps, plus much sharper text for reading…

Higher Screen Reflectance:
The iPad mini is the most portable of the iPads so it will often be used under brighter ambient lighting than full sized Tablets. As a result it’s more important for the mini to have a low Reflectance screen, otherwise reflections from the higher ambient lighting will reduce screen visibility and wash out the images and colors. Most displays are now coming with lower Reflectance screens. The Amazon Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7 managed to accomplish this, even at their low price points, but the iPad mini comes with an unusually high Reflectance – it reflects 53 percent more ambient light than the Nexus 7 and 41 percent more than the Kindle Fire HD. This is another poor choice and another significant competitive shortfall…

Smaller Color Gamut:
The previous generations of LCD Tablet and Smartphone displays had smaller Color Gamuts in order to improve their screen Brightness, Power Efficiency, and Battery Running Times. But that’s been changing due to both technology and competition. Full standard Color Gamut displays not only deliver more accurate and vivid colors, but are better in high ambient lighting because the additional color saturation improves image contrast. While the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 had reduced 61-64 percent Color Gamuts the new iPad 3 and iPhone 5 have full 100 percent standard Color Gamuts. So it was a surprise and major disappointment for the iPad mini to arrive with an antiquated smaller 62 percent Color Gamut, especially considering that the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7 both managed to deliver considerably larger 86 percent Color Gamuts. That’s another poor choice and another significant competitive shortfall…

Ok...for the whites picture, we need to know exactly what white balance settings the camera was set to to make any kind of fair comparison. All we know from EXIF is that the white balance was "manual." Hopefully that means it was manually set to 6500K, otherwise the comparison photo is useless.

Where is the original thread on that comparison? Perhaps the photographer mentions his setup in more detail.

I tried to remember where I saw it but that forum moves fast and I can't seem to locate it at the moment. I don't even remember what the thread title is. Heh. I will keep looking.

In another news, apparently mic works. Woot! This is a wonderful news. AT apparently reported otherwise according to the thread. (I didn't read the AT review so I had no idea)

I'd pick one up in a heartbeat if they had text scrolling that was half as good as the ipad.

But they don't.

Looks good on paper. I'll pass.

Got my 32GB model in the mail today, alongside a Chromecast I ordered at the same time. Can't wait to get home and mess around with both of them more, but in the meantime, fired up The Citadel app from Epic and got 59fps average at 1920x1104 in the benchmark. Holy smokes, this thing is fast...

Got mine last night. Very sleek tablet. The one noticeable improvement for me is the Google keyboard. It's 100% butter smooth when gesture typing, which wasn't the case before.

As of right now MX Player doesn't work for me (4.3), but I'm sure it's being worked on.
