Size Comparison:

Old Nexus 7: 198.5 x 120 x 10.45
New Nexus 7: 200 x 114 x 8.7
iPad Mini: 200 x 134.7 x 7.2

The Mini has a larger screen of course.

They shrunk the side bezels and grew the top and bottom ones. If they had front firing speakers I'd call it a good trade, but that isn't the case. I don't think its a deal breaker though.

That photo doesn't seem right. The physical size difference is only 1.5 mm (198.5mm vs 200mm).

I dunno, have a gen 1 N7, and an iPad Mini, for the $, I'd rather have a Mini, I'll be skipping this gen of the N7 (and having a Note 2 sort of makes the N7 redundant anyway)

The bezel is ridiculous. That and the footer menu keys, there's like no screen left.

Lol, people are dropping the 2012 Nexus 7 in droves.

Yeah, except most of them want a lot more than it's worth, and will end up having to keep it.

Either way, I don't understand what all the excitement is about. While the new Nexus 7 is an improvement over the previous one, it's not a "huge" improvement, and definitely not the sort of improvement I was expecting. Constantly upgrading hardware without any software to back it up is pointless. (from a users perspective) I guarantee about 80% of all Nexus 7 users WILL NOT use the front camera more than a few times if ever. I also know, there wont be a single app or game that will not run on the old device but runs on the new one. Android 4.3 will be available on the old device too... Even if it wasn't, there would be a CyanogenMod version for it.

Overall there wont be anything truly "essential" which you can do on the new device but cannot do on the old. It's sort of like deciding between the Galaxy S4 and S3. There is practically nothing that the S4 can do which the S3 cannot when the S3 has CyanogenMod installed, short of the bigger screen and better camera. The only truly useful, and special thing the new Nexus 7 has is the longer battery life. That is truly awesome. Also, hopefully it doesn't have the charging problem its predecessor has. But still, it's not like most people use their Nexus 7 more than 5 hours at a time...

That google commercial about the kid struggling with public speaking is so cheesy. I almost wanted to puke. Seriously... If I ever see ONE kid in the whole country consistently use the device in the same exact way to accomplish similar tasks I'll be truly astonished. In real life that same kid would probably use his Mac or a PC to do the same thing much more quickly and efficiently. I was also deadly afraid of public speaking in school or in college. Guess what.. No tablet or PC could ever help me get rid of that phobia. I also looked up famous people in history who were good speakers, and articles talking about how to overcome public speaking fears.. It was all useless when I actually went in front of that class, the only thing that existed is me and my fear. What helped me overcome this one day was simply.. repetition... going up there again and again... Same as learning to play guitar.. Same as studying any subject.. or learning any new thing... Do it over and over enough times, and even the biggest imbacille and idiot will learn or overcome whatever it may be. No Nexus 7 required.

The bump to 1080P is by itself an improvement worth getting.

Please refrain from throwing out statistics as if you know for a fact.

In "real life" a lot of kids don't have rich parents and can't afford their own Mac or PC, but a brand new Nexus 7 is more within reach.

You clearly missed the point of that ad. The Nexus 7 is the kid's vehicle to accessing all of the content be it videos, websites, etc. that's helping him learn about his fear and overcoming it. With a tablet you don't have to sit in a chair or behind a desk, or more importantly in a lab or room, you can do the same stuff outside in a park, or on your bed, or anywhere you want.

I think its great there's a new Nexus 7 and that its faster and all. And this review is ok I guess.

But, there's nothing more grown up or less grown up about a back with holes and a bsack without holes, so that part is nonsense.

Speed. The old Nexus 7 isn't slow. Its great the new one is faster, maybe its required becasue of the new screen. But I never encounter any slowness on the old N7 unless it runs out of memory or storage, which I'm sure will be true of the new one as well.

It's the exact same size. Exactly how is there no screen left?

Exact same size as what? The old N7? Well, why didn't they reduce the bezel further? Look at the wallpaper, its so small compared to the rest of the physical device size. Web browsing in landscape mode has got to be horrible. I would say its strictly a portrait device in that case.

Reviews from the verge can't really be trusted these days.

They gave Windows a 9 for ecosystem. iDevices apparently have a better ecosystem than x86 Windows.

EDIT: Case in point.
While Apple has a track record for supporting older devices, Android manufacturers don't, which makes me question the long-term viability of this Nexus 7.

Dude doesn't know how Nexus support works, or where it comes from.

I don't think we should have to buy devices every 3 years to continue to get the latest updates. I'll be happy when we leave this hyper-performance growth curve and the focus is largely on software where even a 4-5 year old piece of hardware can get the latest software. Of course, this means OEMs need to ship less hardware if there is any hope of keeping all hardware up to date.

The fact that they post reviews so early after release is ridiculous. The verge review didn't even have any benchmarks or battery life tests.

If you had said 1 year I might have agreed, but 3 years is a long time. I would not want OEMs holding back hardware updates just because some people want their purchase to be the newest thing for 3 years.

I found out that Best Buy has it in stock and impulse bought.

Funny thing is I can't verify if it is the 2013 model. Guess I'll have to find an app.

This was "pickup" though. There's no way to tell on the packaging actually.

I downloaded CPU-Z and it shows the S4 Pro. Says the display res is 1200x1824, heh.
