There are three ways to fix the issue:

(1) Edit the driver INF file and remove everything but the highest refresh rate for each resolution (subject to your monitor of course).
(2) Use a utility like RivaTuner that alters your registry and strips away all refresh rates except for the highest one your monitor supports.
(3) Use a memory resident program like Multires which intercepts resolution changes and automatically applies the refresh rate you've selected.

were you able to get rivatuner or multires to work? i was using rivatuner before the upgrade and was working perfectly for the refresh rate. after installing the new drivers though, at least in counterstrike, it hasnt been able to work.. so i tried multires (checkbox checked to force refresh rate), and it partially works until i enter an actual game, then it reverts back to 60hz. thanks

No, RivaTuner won't work until RC11 comes along because nVidia changed their registry driver structure with the 2742 drivers.

Multires works fine and in fact should work with any video card and any driver because it's memory resident. Just make sure to keep it running in the background after you lock your refresh rates or else you'll go back to 60 Hz.

The ideal solution of course is to edit the INF file before the drivers are installed but not everyone knows how to do this and you can screw things up if you don't know what you're doing.

that's strange then.. cuz i have it in my system tray/background running.. oh well. i rather not mess around with the inf files. i guess ill just wait till rivatuner is updated or find something else.. it was only recently that i started running the refresh rate fix, so my eyes will adjust easily back to 60hz for the timebeing.. thanks for the info though.

Brian48, that UT problem is not linked to the nvidia drivers (although they could make it worse I suppose), but is actually a UT problem. Actually its not really a problem because even though it can go on for a second or two after exiting it has never failed to stop playing the music. Probably it has a slight delay killing the thread they used to play music.

Anyway, this happens on lots of other graphics cards that aren't nv based.

As for these new drivers, they sound like a pretty poor new set that have been rushed out just so that nvidia can claim their reference drivers do support the GF4. I think I'll stick with the 21.88's as they are fastest in games compared to the 22's and upwards (3DMark score is irrelevant as when I use newer drivers 3DMark goes up usually while game performance goes down) and dont think I'll even bother with these new ones.

Just found that out here too.

I'll stick with 23.12 til then..........

vss1980,

I realize that it may be UT problem, however I never had this problem with the v21.83 drivers when running from my old GF3. It wasn't until I upgraded to the more recent drivers (v23.x and above) that this started to occur. The problem is very reproducable and has since carried over to my GF4 despite a reformat. I've already emailed both Epic and nVidia about this, but like always, I never got a response.

UT is fairly old so I'm not as concerned about this game per say, but I do use it as a test bed for other Unreal-based games and hope this is not going to carry over to Duke Nukem (taking) Forever, which is my real concern.

Brian48, I understand and see how this could be slightly annoying (it was off-putting the first time I noticed it).

However, (and excuse how flippant this sounds) there are more important things in life to worry about and far worse problems you could have with your computer. I assume epic know about this problem but as its nothing serious are not worried about it. I also doubt it will be a trait carried forward into the next Unreal games.

I installed these. What file exaclty do I need to alter to fix this damn refresh rate problem? Do I fix it before or after the install?

Make sure you've followed the correct steps:

(1) Load the application and select the "lock refresh rates" option.
(2) Go to the system tray icon and at each resolution pick the highest refresh rate you can.

Thereafter whenever you switch to any resolution the refresh rate should be locked to whatever you chose provided the app is open and in the tray. I tried it on the 2832s last night and it was working perferctly. Note that you should have your monitor driver correctly installed for the best results.

If you don't want to use MultiRes (like me) I highly advise you use PowerStrip to force refresh rates instead and that utility works perfectly with pretty much any video card and driver out there. With that utility go to each resolution, click the padlock button and then pick what refresh rate you want. When you've finished check the "Lock All Standard Refresh Rate" selections and set the program to startup with Windows and you're all set.

hey all... errr... I just bought a Geforce 4 Ti4400 card... Its coming soon (next week) and I am about to build a system with Windows XP Pro. Now the questions:

1. I am a little behind and worried... what problems do the new drivers have... (the 28.something)???
2. Will the new one work... if not how can I fix it (i heard Riva tuner????)
3. If I dont like the version of drivers I used how do I completely roll back ( i heard of the Detonator Destroyer or something)?

Sorry for being behind, but this thread is making me a bit worried for my new system. THanks for any help.

I wonder if these drivers will fix the Diablo2 slowdown issue with Nvidia cards.

I don't think you need to be worried.

The issues you are reading about here are not problems that systems don't work, they
are issues of optimization.

The new drivers are going to work fine for you. What we see that we are complaining about
is that when a 3D application starts, the refresh rate of our monitor is being switched to 60Hz.
This can be annoying because a flicker is noticable (especially when the monitor is in your periferal (sp?) vision.

Several ways exist to avoid this "issue"

Here's what I do:

I download the detonatorXP drivers version 23.12 from here

Then I use winzip to extract them into any directory.

Then I use the windows hardware manager to update the video adapter driver (I have to point to the
directory I unzipped the dets. to.)

Then I download RivaTuner from here

I unzip the RivaTuner to any directory, and run Rivatuner.exe

When the window comes up, you see an upper and a lower section for tweaking.
In the lower section, click on the small button (marked with a triangular icon)
it pops up several icons, and then you click on the one that says 60Hz

Now you are done. Nothin to it!

PS: yer gonna LOVE that card!

quick question ...

i was under the impression that drivers should be downloaded from the video card manufacturer, rather than the chipset manufacturer. has this changed? i just downloaded creative's newest drivers for my card, which were only released a few days ago on 3/17 ... should i upgrade again?

speaking of UT, i've been having trouble running it too. my mouse is disappearing and letters r missing from words like so: "U re l Tour ame t"

I used to have a Diamond Viper V770 (TNT2).

I had much better luck with the NVidia drivers than with those from Diamond.

Biggest problem was their application software, not the drivers themselves (I forget what they called their program)

Anyway, experimentation is probably going to be your best tool. Be sure to COMPLETELY remove all the creative software (add/remove programs)

then upgrade to the Detonators. You may even want to experiment with different versions of the dets.

I don't think there is any SET answer.

After more extensive testing I have concluded that these drivers suck majorly. UT performance is really slow in both OpenGL and Direct3D and they also cause hard lockups in Serious Sam2 after 30-60 minutes of play.

btw, where do ppl here get older drivers or directx7? i have the newest directx8 installed
