New Nvidia drivers "hang" system.

I've actually had this problem before but was able to fix it through sheer lucl. Anyways, up until a few months ago I had a bad habit of installing new Nvidia drivers over the old ones. It always seemed to work fine so I didn't pay much mind to it. A couple months ago I tried to update the drivers, and while they installed fine, during boot my system would hang at the loading screen for an extra 30 seconds. After it got past that, the screen would remain black for yet another 30 seconds. Eventually, the desktop would load and all was well. The extra load time was a PITA so I rolled back to the old drivers. Month later, tried new drivers, all worked fine.

So I've been using 43.** for a while now and figured it was time to try again, except this time after reading several posts here, I decided to uninstall the drivers and use Driver Cleaner 2. I followed the instructions...uninstalled drivers, reboot into saef mode, run DC, reboot , install new drivers(52.16). Once again though, my system hangs forever during boot. Something else I noticed this time however is that if I try to select the Nvidia settings icon in the taskbar or Advanced under Display Properties> Settings the system does the same thing, hangs for 20-30 seconds before opening the settings. As far as games, the drivers seem fine. Tried KoToR just to test and it ran fine.

So does anyone have a clue as to why it keeps hanging up so much? If I got to deal with this much longer I'm gonna roll back again. Any advice is appreciated.

I decided to uninstall the drivers and use Driver Cleaner 2. I followed the instructions...uninstalled drivers, reboot into saef mode, run DC, reboot , install new drivers(52.16). Once again though, my system hangs forever during boot.

When you remove your drivers via Control Panel and Add/Remove programs icon,I recommend you disable your NIC(renable it after driver install) and boot into safe mode and run driver cab cleaner then SP1 cab cleaner(for WinXP SP1) before you actually run the main Driver Cleaner part(both can be found in tools menu of Driver Cleaner).

Both driver cab cleaner and SP1 cleaner only need to be run just the once(first time only).

I`ve the same motherboard,I`m using the latest VIA Hyperion 4.49 drivers which work well with that board so try reinstalling them if you still get problems after you`ve run Driver Cleaner, btw Driver Cleaner has been updated so make sure you`re using latest version (2.6).

VIA 4.49 driver link .

One last thing after you have run Driver Cleaner, you should reboot back to normal desktop and then install the Nvidia drivers,if wizard detects new hardware on reboot and when you go in safe mode hit cancel.I recommend anti-virus is disabled while they are installing.

Make sure you remove the old DC first before installing the new Driver Cleaner 2.6.

No dice...

Details:

Currently running 43.45
DLed Nvidia drivers 52.16 , VIA 4.49 4in1 , and Driver Cleaner 2.6.
Installed 4in1 drivers-reboot
Uninstalled Nvidia drivers-reboot into safe mode
Canceled Hardware wizard- Installed DC 2.6
Ran DC under the Nvidia profile-reboot to normal
Installed 52.16 drivers(With Norton disabled)- reboot
Same crap....hangs for 30 extra seconds on Windows loading, another 20 seconds of black screen after that. Accessing the Advance display setting causes a 30 second system hang before executing. I even unloaded all my start-up items just in case something there was conflicting....no dice there either.

All in all, the drivers work, but it is just fvckin annoying to have these hang-ups, especially on boot. Thanks for the advice though. Anything else?

Reformat is then probably the best option.

Btw what other PCI hardware are you using? Also leave PCI slot one empty(nearest to AGP slot),some BIOS tweaks can`t do no harm so go into BIOS disable video ram cacheable, disable system bios cacheable, disable all video shadowing, disable fastwrites and set AGP aperture size to 64mb or 128mb.

Only other PCI cards I have are a network card and a sound card, neither are in the slot nearest to the video card. I'll tinker with the BIOS but I think it's inevitably going to have to be reformatted....

I'm having the same problem and have similar specs as you - This is what I posted on another board -

"I had a problem with my other computer, so I transplanted my 40GB Maxtor HD, D-Link 10/100 PCI NIC card, and my PNY GeForce3-ti200 vid card to my friends motherboard.

The 40 Gig drive is partitioned into one 30gb FAT32 segment, and then I keep 10gb's for the OS so I can easily remove it if I have problems. After running Fdisk on the HD, to clear out the 10gb partition which held the old copy of Win2k, I formatted using NTFS, then I re-installed Win2k. I had no problems installing the NIC driver, no problems connecting to the net, installing all the windows updates, new service pack, DX9b, etc. Then when I finally install the newest Nvidia drivers and it asks for me to reboot, I get an at least 5 minute hang when I get to the Windows2k splash screen with the little blue segmented progress bar.

Then it hangs again when I get to the desktop for another min or two. And also when I try to access the advanced area of the nvidia graphics tab on the display properties menu. Once I get through all that, everything seems to operate normally as far as I can tell.

Anybody have any clue what the culprit could be? I had this same exact problem with my other machine, though seemingly amplified on this slightly slower computer. The only things shared are the Hard drive, Video Card, and the NIC card. I'm thinking maybe totally whiping out the hard drive, as I had an old partition on there, but I haven't done that just yet since I don't have a quick an easy way to backup the stuff on there that I don't want to lose. Other than that, I don't really know what else to try.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks much =)"

Specs of my old computer -

Epox 8K7A
Athlon 1.33
512 DDR PC2100
Win2k SP4
GeForce3 Ti-200 64MB - PNY Brand
DX9b
D-Link 10/100 NIC - DFE-530TX
Maxtor 40GB HD

Also, if you read the above, transfering only the Vid Card, NIC, and HDD duplicates the problem on a 1.1 GHz system, but it hangs even longer than before, and on a brand new install of Win2k.

Have you checked the EVENT LOG to see if it shows what
app or service is hanging?

Have you enabled BOOT LOGGING?
Start the computer, press F8, and then select 'Enable Boot Logging'
on the Windows Advanced Options Menu

Then check the file Ntbtlog.txt for the error.

I'm having the exact same problem here. I've tried Detonator 52.16 and 45.23, both are causing problems. The Detonators that come with the nForce2 software download also caused problems. I have an Epox 8RDA3+ which is an nForce2 Ultra 400 board. PNY GF3 Ti200, Athlon XP 1600, Leadtek Winfast TV 2000 Deluxe, 768MB PC2100 (ValueRAM and Crucial). This is a fresh install of Windows XP. It worked fine until I installed the nVidia detonator drivers. Now it hangs for 1-2 minutes on boot. It hangs for 10 seconds going into the advanced display properties, and it hangs for about 30 seconds when I right click on the nVidia Media Center icon in the system tray.

I used Bootvis to log my startup, and it shows the video driver as the cause of the delay. Sometimes when the system starts up, it will reboot right after I log in to Windows. Sometimes it boots fine except for the delay. When it crashes unexpectedly, on the next boot Windows always shows a dialog box warning that the video drivers caused a crash.

Any ideas? Seems like the same exact problem is happening to a lot of people.

The common denominator seems to be the GeForce3 ti-200. Perhaps specifically the PNY brand. Not sure which brand darkeneddays has. As to why, I have no clue =(

You may want to run the SYSTEM FILE Checker to find out what
system files have been replaced or corrupted.

From Start \ Run type sfc /scannow
You will need to reboot and likely need the WinXP CD.

Your systems are probably unstable anyways. It probably wont matter what version you are using, it's virtually inevitable that your systems will experience problems sooner or later. My recommendation is get rid of anything obsolete, reinstall fresh OS and use all latest drivers despite your opinions of them. The latest Forceware drivers work great on a system with a stable environment. BTW, the first boot after a driver install will always take the longest, it's initializing, so give it some time and patience. If it persists, then you have a problem. There should be no reason why an old driver would work better unless you are running software/hardware that is more or less obsolete or badly programmed.

I wanted to bump this thread. I'm still having this problem. Epox 8rda3+ (nforce2 ultra 400), PNY GF3 ti 200, Sil 3112A SATA, Hitachi 160GB SATA drive, 768MB RAM. nForce driver version 3.13, which comes with video driver version 52.16.

This is a clean install of Windows XP SP1. It ran OK until I put the nVidia drivers on it. I guess it may be an issue with the old PNY cards. It is a 2 year old video card, maybe it's time to start thinking about a replacement.

PNY doesn't release drivers, that's just a link to nVidia's reference drivers. I guess I'll try 53.03, which are the latest nVidias. Haven't tried them yet.

I tried both 50X versions and they both "hang" the system. I also had the PNY GF3ti200. I recently RMA'd it with my warranty though. I really believe it's the card.

I had this at work- open Task Manager and kill off "rundll32.exe". IIRC, that's a hardware scan in progress- looking for new devices. Don't know why it's there but stopping it loading with "msconfig" didn't produce any undesirable results and fixed it entirely

woah...i forgot all about this thread.

In case anyone was wondering I went over to the MSI forums( makers of my gf3 ti200) and it was a known problem. It seems all drivers after 44.xx cause the system to hang on boot. Many angry owners over there

Just fyi....

People on the MSI and Guru3D forums mentioned that flashing the video card's BIOS may solve this problem. I'm feeling adventurous, so I think I'll try that tonight. Never flashed a vid card before..

I'm a poor S.O.B. I don't have the guts to flash the BIOS on mine. Especially considering it's out of warrenty. Good luck though
