There is absolutely, positively, ZERO chance that the average new grad starts out at $50K. NONE. NADA. ZIP. ZILCH.

I've been involved in the engineering department at two colleges now. Both schools show the exact same chart from the exact same publication showing ostensible graduate statistics.

I am wondering how someone is supposed to really live on, say, $40k/yr. You lose the first third to taxes, so there's $27k/yr left. A low-cost rent area can get to what, $700/month? Still $8400/yr, and then you'll need to purchase a car (see: car payments), keep it maintained, repaired, and fueled. High cost rent area is double for the worst places, and more than that easily. So figure easily half your remaining income is gone just for living and possibly a car.

Yep, they use old stats because if the truth were known, people would go elsewhere, choose another major, or not go at all. Law school and MBAs are probably the worst offenders after undergrad.

Old stats, and the only favorable ones. RIT and UML obviously have different payment figures, different placement figures, but the ones they are most likely to blow up and put on a poster are the happiest ones.

Oh, add utilities to rent costs. Yeah, let's go with about $10k/yr left, maybe a little better.

That has to cover food, clothes, entertainment (movie, drinks, whatever), services (phone, TV, internet), hopefully some savings, and whatever other crap might pop up to make a mess of things.
