New Opty 165

I'm jumping on the Opteron 165 bandwagon (about a year late) to do my dual core upgrade to get the most out of my 939 system. I hear the Opty's come with a nice heat sink fan. Should I use the new one, or use the XP-90 that I have now? Will it really matter? I am looking to OC, so I guess I'm looking for the best cooling.

The stock cooler Opterons use is actually very good, but i suspect the XP-90 would be slightly better unless you are running the stock fan at full blast.

I agree with n7. Between the stock HSF and some AS5, I've maintained great temps on my 165 even with a 40% overclock. Don't really see why I need anything different. But if you get the 165, you can try both and see which works best in your situation, so you really can't lose either way.

There are 2 types of AMD Heatpipe Heatsinks, One has a 70mm fan, the other 80mm Delta fan that can be easily removed. I put on a 80mm to 120mm adapter then a 120mm fan and it works better than any aftermarket fan.

Think of it as a smaller XP-90, an XP-80. What makes it work so well is the fan blows through the heatpipes directly into the CPU baseplate itself as well as the motherboard

Thanks guys. Yeah, I guess I can play around with it and see which I like better.

It's been a while since I've been in my case. I forget which fan I got with the XP-90 (it was the one everyone recommended) but I do know it's currently hooked up to a fanmate and turned down about half way.

The Shrimp Knows, Seems to be a nice quiet combo, not great for OC'ing. >Looks similar except it is missing the Heatpipes
