I am having this "black screen " issue with Asus R290. Latest drivers didn't solve the issue. There is a beta driver on the AMD site, but it's older than the current drivers.

This "black screen" issue is so annoying, it rendered my computer almost useless.

Maybe this problem is Vram-related. If black screen issue don't allow you even start the windows, then you should RMA it.

If you don't want to RMA and would like to workaround the problem. There's a bunch steps that will probably solve your problem:

1.1) Check the external power cable and the electrical installations of home(to avoid the appearing of coil whine);
1.2) Check out the installation of the card into the case;
1.3) Make sure all internal power cables are comfortable into the chassis;
2) Update your BIOS to the lastest BIOS from the ASUS website;
3) Format your system to completely remove older driver remains(Only newer drivers only have the newer powertune control feature);
4) Use driver 13.12 WHQL, don't use any driver older than 13.11beta v9.5 with your 290 card;
optional) Override your FAN profiles with afterburner/Trixx with more aggressive fan profiles, don't letting the card going over 90°C in gaming.

I think , i found a way to replicate this "black screen " problem.

Running Heaven benchmark for almost an hour a few times didnt cause a problem.
But once i started MSI Afterburner, same benchmark caused a "black screen" .
Everytime i get a black screen or BSOD , a similar software (hwmonitor, cputem,gpu tweak ) is running. If i dont start those applications ,system works without any problem.

So i guess this is a driver problem???

To check this for us you can do this "trick": Enable the program ingame OSD to se if the program is locking the FAN control into below 40% levels.
Users related on the forums you can use afterbuner/Trixx/VGA monitor with the 290 cards normally.

I tried that. Applications don't lcok the fan control.

But i 've uninstalled all those monitoring tools, updated the bios, uninstalled and reinstalled the latest drivers, disabled Overdrive . 10 days in a row, no BSOD , no black screen.

If it is a hardware problem, it's a very tricky one. Since i can't show the error, i can't send it to RMA.

you said updated the bios. what is your card exactly? I want to know cause mine is sapphire r9 290x tri-x and if there is BIOS update I missed it.

Btw all the problem is with the monitoring tools I think for some specific cards. Sapphire for example is not using the new PowerTune but the old one, so the card is not throttling based on temp and fan speed, but just temp. Give it some time for it to have matured drivers.

No, i was refering the Mainboards new bios . I don't know if it makes any difference, but thats one of the parameters i changed.

I'm waiting for the new drivers, but i am about to lose my "30 day " right. I emailed the local distributor of the card. Lets see if they have any solution.

Perhaps the BIOS update could have solved it. When the HD 7000 series were released, there were reports of older motherboards requiring a new BIOS for it to work correctly.

No. DVI .

I checked the newegg cumsomer reviews. Some users just return them, and get a new card without a problem. Some users returned them a few times, and new cards have the same error .

Its Driver/New Powertune/High temps on other components than GPU/Video Memory related. Seems weird, but is this.

No problem then. Hardware problem still have chance to show at anytime if you have a true defective card. A little bunch of 290 cards will still die, but the amount of dead cards will be proportionally low compared to BSOD/crash issues on 290 cards.

Could you post here to me the link of the BIOS you used on your card please? I found so many problems like this on other forums, and a friend of mine that haves to RMA his card because this...

I wish I could be more help than this, but all I know is one of the Sapphire 290X cards I used to have would black screen all day everyday, randomly, during use or just browsing desktop. The other Sapphire 290X I had was fine. Both Gigabyte 290s I have are fine. I think it might've just been a bad card, because any combination of latest drivers/BIOS would still black screen that card.

I sent the card to RMA . I don't think new drivers will solve the problem. it's a tricky hardware problem. Even if it's a driver problem, i don't have to figure out AMD 's bugs for them.

Edit :

@el etro , it's bios for the motherboard , not the graphics card. I coulnd't find a bios for the card either. Sorry i coulnd't pm you. I don't have rights to pm (not enough posts )

20 days ago, I sent my Asus R290 to RMA .
And today , it is sent back to me, cause they didn't find any problem with it.

Thank you Asus , for manufacturing a malfunctioning card, and not taking responsibility for it.

And what am i supposed to do with this? I paid around $550 last month for it. Shall i just throw it in the garbage?

Monitor goes to a "black screen" or turns itself off .

I did a little google search. It is a very common issue. AMD says, they are aware of the issue , and working on it. But the latest drivers still has the problem.

I did a burnintest. MSI kombustor + prime95 worked half an hour without a problem. Also memtest+ completes without errors.
This maybe a hardware issue, but so far, looks like a drivers issue. Some games work without a problem. Heaven benchmark almost always ends up with a "black screen"

That would seriously ..mess me up. Can you remote in to the machine? Maybe we can work around it until a fix lands (and lands soon, i'd be all over RMA and worse on that)

edit: sry, too little too late.

Do you have another piece of hardware you can throw the card in? It could be your specific hardware configuration .. (if so, RMA it again with evidence).

Actually i use very common hardware configuration. And since i removed the Asus R290 from the system, it works without a single issue.

Internet forums, even youtube is full of people complaining about the problem. I think Asus Authorized Tech should have info about the problem. But it seems , they are just a few "computer wiz kids", that checks the hardware by playing a few set of Fifa or Battlefields.

Still, if you RMA it again and they send it back one more time with "tried in 20 different configurations, no problems".. Then what? - You try it out in another rig at the problem is gone? You have no play left.
On the other hand if you test it in another pc and the problem persists, you've got good RMA cards on your hand.
Me? I like to define my hand before playing it.. But we're all different.

I only have an old Q6600 rig laying around. And it's too old to support R290.
Also problem happens randomly. You may see 2-3 BSOD's in 10 mins. or use it without a problem for a few days. Trying it with another computer is not an easy solution for me.

Everytime a BSOD occurs, i check the windows dump file , and it 's the AMD drivers thats causing the computer to crash. Also "black screen " is a know problem with R290,R290x . here are two videos about it. I don't see a reason to suspect other components, since everything points to the graphics card, and the computer works without a single flaw without that card.

I've been a computer enthusiast since i can remember, so i had to deal with these tech services all the time. They are just incompetent. Thats the issue.

like cytg suggests, trying in other PC would be good.

When uninstall AMD drivers, is good to use always the express(total) method offered by the uninstaller in program files.

Delete the "C:AMD" and "C:Nvidia"(if you too have this second) folder, them clean your register/tempfiles with CCleaner.

Reinstall driver(Try a different driver this time, like 13.11b9.5) and at install options chose the minimal installation that you can pick(No catalyst control center or raptr, is ok to pick the runtimes) and use afterburner beta(Latest version is v3.0.0 beta 18).
In afterburner menu, use the fan control to override your fan setting to a higher rate(above 55%) and lock on it with "apply".
Try disabling ULPS in afterburner on the general settings menu.

EDIT: Try to remove UEFI mode setting it(the legacy mode and disabling the secure boot) on BIOS and reformatting the system. It should solve your problem.

(bump)

Sheldon, can you please test disabling the UEFI mode?

This may solve your problem.

Where do i disable the UEFI mode from?

What's your motherboard model?

I want more two things from you:

*To you upload a print screen of the data showed by this program;
**and executing the command msinfo32 on the cmd or in the run men("Win key + R") and telling me the Value on the string named "BIOS Mode". It will show only Legacy or UEFI.

Solution may involve formmating the system.

I will Tell you how to disable the UEFI mode when you give me the three info i asked you.
