New Orleans is below sea level. Looks like it will be okay, though, as most of the trouble will be to the east. Surge will still cause a few problems I'm sure, but it could have been much, much worse.

I live about 180 miles north of New Orleans. All of the hotels are booked, and the animal shelters are packed as well. Traffic has been a bitch on the highway going north through town for the past couple of days. Still, we're glad to have them.

I am just about 10 miles South of Memphis and my family drove up from around Meridian, MS, about 100 miles due north of Gulfport/Mobile. Traffic was very bad they said when they hit Interstate 55 (the highway going north outa NO) in Vaden, MS about 200 miles norht of NOs.

This is a bad one. The bouys out past Dauphin Island (about 80 miles due south of Gulfport) are measuring 46 ft waves. I suspect the beaches will get destoyed. Their talking 20ft+ storm surge around Pensacola.

umm, probably the people who figured out where the mouth of the largest river in North America was, and wanted a port that could control trade to a huge portion of the continent. BTW that was the French, so if all else fails, blame them

They have a large system of levees, seawalls, pumps, etc. The swampy, marshy land down there doesn't help when it comes to engineering solutions. Coastal erosion is a serious problem, the state is losing lots of wetland every year.

From what I've read, if N.O. took a direct enough hit from a big hurricane with a major storm surge, it would overwhelm all of that and submerge the city, probably killing thousands of people.

Very true. Dauphin Island is so pretty. I hate to see what it looks like after this storm is done with it. I had a nice time there a few years ago. Same thing goes for the botanical garden they have in Mobile.

I just finished bringing in all the light stuff I had outside and put it in my garage in preparation for the wind gusts we're gonna get up in Central MS.

Florida's average height for the whole state is only like 100 feet over sea level, with the highest point at like 300'.

The wind has been blowing nicely since yesterday but still no rain as of yet but I know it's coming. I boarded up my windows yesterday. I've been getting alot of movie watching done.
