New Orleans Not Worth Saving

I keep wondering in my mind if these areas around new orleas that are below sea level are even worth saving. I also question why the federal government has to build a bunch of levees just to keep New Orleans dry. Why should the federal government build a stupid levy anyway. Why is it the federal government's responsibility to do such a thing. It would be more inetlligent to just raise up the entire city.

I say bulldoze the low lying areas and use it for a landfill till you can raise the level of the land at least to sea level. Either that or convert it to a nature reserve where no one is allowed to rebuild. Most of those houses are going to be condemned anyway. Just buy the people out and tell them to relocate. If they want to build tell them they have to build on top of 20 foot steel girders and all residents are required to have a boat.

This might be a good area for a modern day venice.

would be a shame to see NO turned into another drive through auto-centric wasteland like the rest of modern american cities...

holland does just fine under sea level...

why would stuff get demolished? the structural damage isn't that bad...the quarter looks kinda soggy though...

but if you lived there the place is pretty damp anyway..

The French Quarter didn't get flooded at all. It's fine save some minor damage from the winds.

Why not build more canals and make the buildings in the "bowl" sit atop a couple floors of supports, a la Venice?

I don't think building more canals is the answer. Low-lying housing should certainly be elevated, but a more prudent course is not to build in flood plains.

I have heard this idea and at least doesnt try to fight nature.
It isnt a matter if but when the levess are broken again.

I bet AQ is already drawing up plans to detonate a couple of them once we drop 250 billion into that pit.

Even Venice has nasty water problems. Flooding and mold are huge issues in Venice. Heck, have you ever been there? The place stinks horribly from the water problems.

Even if the NO houses are structurally fine, many of them need to be bulldozed to get the mold out. I say keep what is salvagable, but don't rebuild in the doomed location.

Every house I lived in in NO had mold....nothing new.

I carried my girlfriend to work on my shoulders one summer when pumps went down...nasty water and there were some funky moldy couches on the street for trash days but sh1t happens.

They will be reopening the quarter soon....they do need to fix those damn projects though..the 9th ward looked like baghdad long before katrina, absoloutley shameful how americans let our poor live that way.

What do you suggest we do in order to "make" them live differently?

Nobody (especially those from NO) wants to hear that, but it's true.

there is no place in america not threatened by some disaster....preperations need to be put in place is all.

NO is not going anywhere...there is no money to rebuild a city and are they going to move the old residents back in to this new beautiful NO...hell no they wouldnt.

it would be a new gentrified corprate sh1thole like the rest of america with the colored folk hidden away somewhere (or more likley in jail)

Unless they do something about the subsidence of the land in NO, rebuilding there is futile. This will only happen again in the future, and possibly to a greater degree.

Who is "you all?"

And yes, this thread is idiotic, and I bet most here can pinpoint the exact moment when it turned that way.

I am curious how people caring more from thousands of miles away will make the neighborhoods improve.
