So Obama has posted a new painting outside of the Oval Office.
A piece by Norman Rockwell, but not just any piece. Perhaps one of the most important post WW 2 piece Rockwell painted titled "The Problem We All Live With"
It is a painting of 6 year old Ruby Bridges being escorted into a New Orleans school in 1960.
The piece has great historical significance because prior to that Rockwell was the all American painter who was loved by all Americans. But he also kept to the social norms of that era by showing blacks in subservient roles in his paintings.
So this piece was a great shock to the readers of the Saturday Evening Post. The all American (white) painter bringing to light the plight of a single black child. You can only imagine the impact of the image. Perhaps the equivalent of the picture of the guy standing in front of the tanks in Tiananmen square. An iconic image that humanizes the struggle faced by the people of China like this painting humanized the struggle faced by one little girl.
It is a nice move by Obama's White House to place it in such a visible location.
And he did it without any fanfare either.
