The Civil Rights movement was the greatest moment for the US Marshal Service. I bet that a good number of them didn't support integration, but they carried out some of the scariest orders ever given to law enforcement.

Forcibly integrating schools while being outnumbered hundreds-to-one and while being given orders not to shoot even if fired upon really must have been a hell of a gut-check moment.

BS. We've sent them an enormous amount of welfare payments over the years (for the children of "spiritual wives"), along with excessive tax refunds, etc. After all Utah is the white collar crime capital of the USA and mormons have no compunction about cheating us "gentiles."

It's ugly - intentionally, because it represents an ugly time in our history - but I find it very inspiring. That tiny little girl bracketed by those huge, faceless men, walking into a war zone with her back straight and her head held high . . .

There are few paintings that so well represent courage as a human quality.

Or for that matter, why a painting of Ruby Bridges, when he could have hung a portrait of Condi Rice who got similar protection when she was the same age and same physical size threat level.

True enough! His work is good enough to be a featured attraction at the new Crystal Bridges Museum (Alice Waltons baby). Along with Warhol and Gilbert Stewart.

I see tha Obama has decent taste in art. I don't see racism so much as a reminder of past racism in a different time.
