It has been 10 or 11 years since my last pc build and I am thinking of building another to play some of the newer stuff on.

My current system is
Asus P8Z68V Pro/Gen 3 Mobo

I5 2500K at 3.30Ghz CPU

16GB G-Skill Ram

MSI GTX 570 video card

I know that GPU's are drastically over priced right now, so I thought I would get a used one until the prices settle down a bit.

If anybody has any thought on mobo's and cpu that would be a great start. I want intel and an Asus mobo, because I have always had great luck in the past.

I will have many more questions, but thought this would be a nice place to start...hoping 2K will get a nice rig not including the video card.

At $2K for PC with no GPU, no way I would skimp on the storage. I would go PCIe4 and a nice drive, just watch for any sort of deal. I’ve never had issues with heat when using the heat sinks - and even not using heatsinks…

32GB of ram is also a minimum for that type of build too, I think.

Do you have a budget breakdown?

What is your GPU budget?

Sounds fun as you have the budget to do it right!

I am going to have to think on the ssd storage.

I may go ahead and do 64 GB of ram, unless that is really overkill for gaming. I will just be gaming at 2K for the time being,
but eventually 4K if the rest of my rig will be up to it. I will be waiting to get a new gpu until the crazy prices drop.

What ram would you suggest for this mobo

Don't overthink it. For games, the type of SSD doesn't make a huge difference, so go for capacity first. I recommend 1TB as a BARE minimum, ideally 2TB or larger. If you can find a decent Gen4 NVME drive for a minimal price premium over a gen3, then you might as well go for it, otherwise it is better to get a 2tb gen3 over a 1tb gen4.

Here is a video benchmarking game performance with the various SSDs:

well, I am sort of trying to make a list of stuff that is compatible ans seems to be good....when I am done with the list I will add up the total and probably have to adjust from there....but maybe it will be easier that way to see what I could save a little on and get close to the same performance

Since 32 GB of ram is fine.

Any suggestions for a good kit for this board

Also for gaming purpose only considered
Intel Core i7-12700K or Intel Core i7-12700KF
I am assuming here, but being I am not going to be using integrated graphics...just grab whichever is cheaper ?

You can always look at the qvl list for RAM that is tested to work on the board. Otherwise I'd just go with whatever 3200 to 3600 CL16 or lower RAM is cheapest. Beyond that, the cost is going to go up for little improvement in performance.

That is what I did. As a gaming machine, iGPU is useless so why bother spending extra for it. There may, on occasions, be times that you might want an iGPU (mainly for troubleshooting), but I've never used mine in my older pc.

There's no point in spending money on a PCIe 4.0 drive unless it's actually going to make a difference. Most workloads won't see a difference. It's not skimping, it's putting money where it will do the most good. (Which might well be back into your pocket.)

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with spending more for the theoretically faster drive, it's OP's money. I just want to point out that faster on paper isn't always faster in real life. I run a workload that ought to benefit significantly from PCIe 4.0; the actual result is 3-4 minutes improvement running an hour+ long, relatively I/O bound job.

As for 32 GB, there are some arguments in favor. Going higher can actually impede performance unless you actually need the extra RAM.

I think it's worth noting that MS has talked about using accelerated storage tricks like the Xbox Series XS use (I forget the acronym they used) and it's at least possible that they will require similar performance requirements (ie, greater than 5,000 MB/Second read speeds) to enable it.

(almost) pure speculation but OP seems like he keeps stuff for a millenia and PCIe 4 will age more gracefully, even if its like debating a SATA2 or SATA3 interface on an old SSD.

I am going to go for the best deal on a 2TB for games, those seem to be a much better deal for PCIe 3.0

I may get a 500GB PCIe 4.0 as the price seems to be more reasonable last I looked.

I think I would be fine with PCIe 3.0 for all to be honest.

I think I may $60 and go for a H670 board also.

Use the extra cash for GPU money
