Question New PC - Casual Gaming - Value play

1. Replacing an old windows PC running a AM3+ motherboard with 16gb of DDR3 1600 memory. PC will be used for casual gaming and sharing media as it is connected to a TV screen with expansion options in the future as there are two kids 4 and 2 that will be growing up with it.

2. $1000 is the top of the budget. Don't need a monitor but likely need a case. Power supply is dead.

3. Parts availability in the USA, with a Microcenter close by.

5. Looking for the system that will be able to grow and AMD or Intel is fine.

6. I'll be using storage, I have a moving drive, an SSD, and a DVD/CD drive. Otherwise, I expect everything else has to go.

7. No plan to overclock

8.1920 x 1080 on older television. Is not 2k or 4k.

9. Would like to start collecting parts now, though if it makes more sense to wait, that's doable.

10 .I'll need Windows.

Looking at pc part picker I found these modest system recommendations. Any red flags with either the AMD or Intel? Or anything saying intel for sure right now, or AMD for sure right now.

Well, if you plan on growing with a better GPU the PSU's are likely not to be sufficient.

On Intel going with an F CPU means you have no backup if your GPU fails i.e the iGPU built into the non-F versions

DDR4 is still the best option at this point with inflated DDR5 / MOBO options.

There's of course new options coming EOY with both. CPU / MOBO's will be updating again for new CPU designs.

There's also the ability to skim through completed builds based off the CPU you intend to use for ideas. As to your existing PC swapping the PSU is easy / cheap enough to do for ~$100 or less. Replacing the PSU though with a new build in mind should shoot for the new target wattage if considering a new higher power GPU.

Taking into consideration this will be hooked up to the TV are you considering Plex or some media playback? Then the CPU/GPU will make a difference if transcoding is needed from the original format.

The AMD one does enable you to upgrade to 5800X3D a few years later, giving you excellent upgrade potential. The Intel one's upgrade path is not clear at this point. It may be upgradable to Raptor Lake. If future upgradability is a concern, go with AMD.
