New pc speakers, recommendations??

Hi there,

I have the Logitech Z-2300 for a good few years now which connects to Xonar STX sound card. I am hoping to upgrade EVERYTHING later this year or earlier next.

I'm no audiophile but I do appreciate good sound. Right now I don't game on PC but I may get back into that once I do my everything upgrade later. So its mainly YouTube, Netflix and some music.

Doing some earlier research, I want something sleeker in design. The Z-2300 woofer is huge and takes up too much space on my desk. (I tried it on the wooden floor under desk but those downstairs were ready to murder me).

With the little research I have done, I am leaning away from the usual pc gaming speaker brands and probably away from the 2.1 system.

Here is what I am looking at so far but I open to better recommendations and suggestions.

1) Edifier R1850DB
2) PreSonus Eris E4.5 4.5
3) Edifier S1000DB (prob too big and pricey)
4) Q Acoustics 3020i
5) Kanto YU4 (prob too pricey)

Also, out of curiosity, should I invest in a decent sound card or would the audio on one of the latest motherboards suffice?

What about a nice pair of headphones? You can crank them up as much as you want, and don't have to worry about complaints.

If you are limited in what you can use because of neighbors, that might be your wisest option. A computer speaker setup has too much treble without a separate subwoofer IMO, and even if you pay a lot of $$$ for a set that offers good base, you will likely run into more complaints from neighbors because bass is really vibrates floors/walls.

I was thinking more of the wife downstairs trying to watch the TV. The subwoofer on the floor was pounding (apparently). So its not too bad noise wise on my desk. It just takes up a lot of space and that is why I was thinking of going for something without the woofer.

Actually I may be in the market for decent headphones as well. Ones that could work with a console as well as pc.

I have the PreSonus Eris 3.5 and am quite happy with them so I'd imagine the 4.5's are even better with a bit more bass. For the price they are tough to beat. If I didn't have my Headphone DAC and Amp alongside a 27" monitor on my desk taking up space I would have gotten the 4.5 size for sure.

I do have a nice headphone setup with a Schiit Bifrost Multibit DAC and a Burson Soloist MkII Amp that make my headphones sing. I used to use my nice headphones on my console to game with but it was annoying mostly because they were wired; eventually I just bought a pair of wireless Steelseries Arctis 7 gaming cans for my PS4 for just $125 and it's a much better setup.

If you really want a nice headphone setup to listen to music with your PC - optical out to a nice desktop DAC and then Amp is the way to go.
