I have been wanting to move to another state for a long time but because financially I wasn't able to, I have been here in Texas for about 12 years. Somewhere that has a more middle of the road feel to it, politically at least. Any ideas? I'm 26 and know that I want to be somewhere that you can relax, low crime rate, and racial discrimination as low as possible. I have a degree in Electrical Engineering and I'd almost take any job that pays decent, just so I could get out of here. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Why would you possibly want to leave the greatest of states?

*cue the Texas haters.

Yeah, if you don't want to be in Texas, good riddance.

And good luck with all the other shitty states that are out there.

(and yes I had lived in 12 other states)

Because your pants make that swooshing sound whenever you enter a room.

You can get a job in the oil field in South Louisiana pretty easily.

Texas is the greatest state in the Union, but it'll take your moving out of it to realize that.

You are crazy! TX is perfect! But if you have to go, I'd suggest Montana! I love exclamation marks!

I do have to agree with Crusty's comment below me. Austin IS different than the rest of the state!

I would guess Austin if he's working in an EE field. Possibly Dallas.

OP, if you are NOT in Austin I would give it a try before you give up on Texas. Austin > the rest of Texas.

I live in Dallas.

And the good riddance remarks is part of the reason why I am not a fan of the state...happens all the time. I thought about Austin to work for AMD (I got a buddy that used to work for them) but I never got the call back. Now I wouldn't be sure they'd even hire me with all of the recent AMD troubles. I get discriminated against more times than I can count and I am just plain sick of it because I am a mulatto man (half spaniard from Spain, half black), and most of my friends are white and all of them were born and raised it Texas and refer to me as the token black guy who eats fried chicken and drinks orange soda...I'm HALF black...can we stop living in the dark ages please? I don't listen to rap, I don't wear negatively portrayed cultural clothes, I don't talk with "ethnic slang". I just want somewhere where I can live out my life normally and die in peace because Texas... AIN'T it.

I believe that Texas and California both exist for the sole purpose of providing the rest of the country with examples of inflated-ego, annoyingly pompous, diehard conservatives/liberals respectively. It's like watching Kim-Jong Il and Saddam Hussein argue about which of them is more charismatic.

OP: Parts of Colorado might be to your liking. It ranges from very conservative in some parts to very liberal in others, so you can probably find a good middle ground somewhere in there.

People in Austin hate the Californians because they are all migrating out here and making everything more expensive

I have news for you. Almost anyplace you move to if you start telling people how much it sucks or that you don't like XYZ and it was done this way back where I come from etc their natural reaction is going to be similar.

Almost. I'd say Northern Midwest, like Wisconsin and Minnesota (Milwaukee, Madison or Minneapolis/St. Paul).

Also consider Denver or Boulder, Colorado.

Boston is a nice place to live if you don't mind the high cost of living

I wouldn't want to live in Dallas either. I've heard that it fits the Texas stereotype. I might be moving to Houston next year and I've heard it's a lot less texan and much more cultured.
