You heard wrong, that would be Austin. Houston is terrible.

I have news for you. Almost anyplace you move to if you start telling people how much it sucks or that you don't like XYZ and it was done this way back where I come from etc their natural reaction is going to be similar.

good point.

Meh, Kentucky is nice, but you might get some backwards attitude in some of the neighborhoods. There are plenty of places to live in the US, what are you looking for other than it being a normal place? Any particular hobbies or climate prefs? Surf, Ski, hike, motorcycle etc?

I love Kentucky, but I'm not going to treat you like an ass if it isn't your favorite place.

I thought about Austin to work for AMD (I got a buddy that used to work for them) but I never got the call back. Now I wouldn't be sure they'd even hire me with all of the recent AMD troubles. I get discriminated against more times than I can count and I am just plain sick of it because I am a mulatto man (half spaniard from Spain, half black), and most of my friends are white and all of them were born and raised it Texas and refer to me as the token black guy who eats fried chicken and drinks orange soda...I'm HALF black...can we stop living in the dark ages please? I don't listen to rap, I don't wear negatively portrayed cultural clothes, I don't talk with "ethnic slang". I just want somewhere where I can live out my life normally and die in peace because Texas... AIN'T it.

sounds like you have more problems with the people youre hanging out with, than the state.
Dude, if you cant live in Dallas as a half Black / Half Spaniard, then youre not noticing demographics or youre out in the 'burbs.

-The racial makeup of Dallas was 48.89% White, 40.41% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 25.88% Black or African American...

so, you're in the majority. remember that when moving somewhere else.
There's good things about Texas, there's bad things. Like anywhere else. I for one don't miss people's pompous attitude. Some posts in this thread is a great example of that.

Come to Minnesota, its cold but that helps to kill the bugs yearly.

More or less, quality of life is good, clean, lower crime, decent schools, not a bad place to settle and raise a family

Texas is the O'Doyle family of America. If you can't understand just how much O'Doyle rules, then by all means, we'd rather you live in Minnesota.

Try Portland. I've heard its a very awesome city. Im taking a trip there next year to find out myself. I live in Kansas City right now. it is not bad, just not enough out door things to do for my tastes.

Somewhere that has a more middle of the road feel to it, politically at least. Any ideas? I'm 26 and know that I want to be somewhere that you can relax, low crime rate, and racial discrimination as low as possible. I have a degree in Electrical Engineering and I'd almost take any job that pays decent, just so I could get out of here. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Have you thought about the northeast at all? Pretty liberal and accepting for the most part. Obviously, you are going to have some bigoted idiots no matter where you go but I'd say the northeast is pretty tolerant overall. Colorado, parts of the northwest and of course California are probably good choices too. Lots of tech jobs for an EE in San Diego and northern California but housing is expensive.

Good luck man!

Texas sucks....so humid and crap in a lot of the more populated areas. Ugh. Couldn't stand Dallas/Ft. Worth area when I was there.

Colorado is great Nice weather if you like cold winters like me. And no days and days on end of 100+ temps.

The only criteria you've given is some place middle of the road politically. In terms of states that would probably be Missouri, Ohio, or Arizona.

Although, there are places in every state to find more moderate politics. Here in Sacramento, for example, you have a nice blend of central valley and bay area sensibilities because of our proximity to both places and mixture of suburban sprawl and urban lifestyle.....and factually the most culturally diverse populous in the United States. Same with San Diego which is in So Cal (liberal hotbed) but is very affluent so the people there prefer not being taxed like mofos and so they vote economically conservative. Places like these exist in every state.

Dude... Dallas sucks. Don't judge all of TX just by Dallas.

Not that we need any more newcomers here, but I'd still say you should try Austin before giving up on TX altogether.

I wouldn't suggest the northeast or north-midwest because you're a minority and those are the whitest places you can go, I think.

Also, I hear that California is a workers paradise /sarcasm.

Cool. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I really appreciate it. I might have to plan a few trips to previously mentioned cities for a weekend or two. And it isn't that I have a problem with my friends, it is that because I don't think like they do about things they have problems with me. So normally I would just brush off their detrimental sarcasm as nothing more than a loose attack with no meaning, but that has been going on with anyone I meet since I was 13. Thanks again guys!

New Mexico is another more politically neutral state. If you can swing a job at Los Alamos National Lab, that area is really nice! Lots of ethnic diversity at the lab.

<- Worked there for a summer while in school

New Hampshire is the best state. No sales or income tax. Its relatively cheap. Manchester, is the largest city in NH and the largest north of Boston and its an hours drive from Boston. In with a 45 minute drive you have many tech companies around here. They call the Northern Boston/Southern NH area the silicon valley of the east. There is no segregation at all here and it is becoming more and more diverse every year...well Manchester at least. Lots of history here in New England too and you have the mountains to the north. Perfect. Plus we have the best motto. "Live Free or Die"

Edit:If it makes any difference I am black, 21, and I was raised up here and see no reason to move.

Let me guess, you where born and raised in New Orleans and then moved to Texas? I ask because with that math it appears you graduated from our great N'awlins publik skewl edukation system.
