My town is building a new police station across the street from my condo complex. Part of me thinks this is a good thing because the town needs a new police station but another part of me thinks that the area will ultimately degenerate as areas around police stations often do. Police stations do bring a large police presence into an area but they also bring a criminal element into the area and there will always be criminals coming and going from the station.

What would you think if a new police station was built next door to your neighborhood? I would describe my neighborhood as middle class. The town has about 10,000 people and is mostly made up of corporate offices. I have been told up to 100,000k people commute to the town every day to work which seems right because traffic during the day is insane. Our town has a low crime rate currently. I'm hoping we won't see Bob's Bail Bonds or Jim's Title Loans pop up next door any time soon.

Click.

If you click the link and switch to satellite view you will see a small, red building - that is a fire station. The clump of trees to the right of the fire station is gone and the police station is being built there, pretty much touching the ball fields. I think there are going to be a bunch of broken windows at the police station. Across the street you can see the condo complex which is a gated community. There is also another gated complex to the left of the fire station. The road is a dead end, only one way in or out.

Edit:

The link is fixed, also if you wanted to see the progress of the station you can visit the web site. Click.

Why would a police station degrade teh neighborhood? it's not like the criminals are willingly coming in.

Are you concerned someone might break into your condo freshly out of the station or what?
Any self respecting criminal would refrain from committing crimes near the Police Station.

businesses will open up nearby that cater to criminals (bail bondsmen, cheap lawyers, etc.)

Yes they are, often to visit other criminals in lock up. I used to work next to the county jail and the people coming and going are not the sort of people you generally want to associate with.

I'm not saying it will be entirely good or entirely bad. I don't know what I think for sure about it - either way it's going to happen. The building is maybe 50% complete right now. This is otherwise a very quiet street with basically no through traffic.

are you sure that prisoners will be housed long-term?
i've never been arrested, so i don't exactly know how this works...
obviously they will have holding cells and whatnot...but not house prisoners or criminals there long enough for visitors to come, etc.

police stations & jails aren't the same thing are they?

They often are in smaller cities. OP says the pop there is around 10,000 so it's very possible.

Correct. Are we talking about a Police station or a Jail?

Based on the size of your town, if it's a police station it's not going to have a large number of holding cells.

Just a couple of holding tanks to store folks til they sober up or they ship them to county.

i live across a parking lot from our police and fire station in a town of ~20,000. there are no bailbondsmen, cheap lawyers etc.

Well, our town is surrounded on all sides by other, larger towns. The metro area is 2.5 mil.
