Yeah, same here, the 3.5GB/.5GB split is the 970's downfall.
I rather get a 8GB card and be more future proof than stick with a card that will be EOLed long before the 480 is.

If I had to choose between GTX970 and RX480, I'd go for the full 4GB card without hesitation.

sure, at the same price there is no doubt, but i can t see a chance to have the same price:

- RX 480 8gb :325 EURO
- RX 480 4GB: not listed atm (but it s probably 30e less than 8gb)
- GTX 970: 225 EURO

i can assume rx 480 4g is going to cost about 285e at day1(325uro-30euro)

edit:
pls don t post shop links here

Can you please explain your rationale for requesting that shop links not be posted? Your OP claims that the Zotac GTX970 has had a price cut in your country to EUR220, but that's below sale prices in pretty much any other country let alone an across the board price cut. No one specifically calls you out on it, but when someone asks for it you not only refuse to link the card you're using as the basis for your AMD vs nVidia comparison, but you request no one else post links as well.

I might get an infraction for this, but as other have noted this whole thread smacks of fanboyism and FUD.

Reviews matter, but given Nvidias lack of support for discontinued Products in recent years, it seems quite the gamble.

There is no problem with posting shop links here to my knowledge, when used as an example like this.

I don't believe there is a store selling a 970 for 220 euro after VAT. Post the link or its not real.

$240 to AMD for at least a 970 equivalent with 8GB, lower power and far better aging or slightly more for NV without the advantages? What a tough choice!

Kind of convenient to just leave out that the 970 is running at almost 1.5GHz, and those are games that are heavily biased towards nVidia. We will have full benchmarks soon. Lets just wait a bit shall we

GTX 580 used to be faster than a 7870:
https://tpucdn.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7850_HD_7870/images/perfrel_1920.gif

Today?

370 is an overclocked 7850, 270X is an overclocked 7870:
https://www.computerbase.de/thema/grafikkarte/rangliste/

Time is not kind to the old, especially if they have less VRAM.

For a ~1 year place holder sure, but what would you be waiting for since 1070 is here? Cheaper 1070/1080 after more AMD competition? The time for Nv 900 and AMD 300 series placeholders has ended, imo.

Using different reviews with a complete set of different games on different systems- not a good comparison at all.

The next issue- the 270x was 130-140% the speed of a 7850 and 110-115% the 7870 at launch. Which means, it would have always been faster. Busting that bubble.

Since there are so many different 370 models, partner custom designs on a card that was quietly rolled out....it is a little hard to nail down exactly where it stands but logically it should be a a decent improvement over the 7850, especially considering we already had a bump up from the 7800 to 270 series.

But you know...all of this is besides the point when you are comparing an ancient nvidia card vs an AMD line thru 3 generations of improvements. The new consoles have sent ram requirements well past the days a 580 was acceptable...

I mean, seriously, your comparison is not at all a valid when looking at a 480 vs the 970.

There were youtube videos today that showed performance of RX 480 is pretty much the same as gtx 970.

But I think I am onto you, u seem a little bit of an nVidia fanboy causing all this fuss for no reason, trying to make the new cards look bad because they are too expensive... Btw have u seen the release prices of 1080 or 1070 when they came out ?

Just like others pointed out if u shop around u can find an 8GB RX 480 for 269 Euros in one of the french amazon links above... so thats pretty close to its real price.

It's a no brainer, get the RX 480 the 970 is done and will advance no further.

Right. Who is confident NV will keep on optimizing for the 970 or other Maxwell GPus in new games?

They didn't show much love for Kepler once Maxwell was the new king.

That definitely has to affect your purchasing decision.

Thus, its the same for people asking about 1070 vs custom Oc 980Ti, at the same price, go for the 1070.

That's a stock 480 versus an OCed 970 to it's very limits. 20% OC. And it still can't beat a 480.

970? Is it 2015 again? No point. If you really cant bring yourself to buy AMD and are willing to play with less RAM going forward anyway, just wait a month and buy a 1060.

There is every reason to believe that GTX-980/70 performance is going to tank just like the 700 series. They haven't actually replaced the 980 ti yet so that should be alright for a while. Add to that poor support for DX12 and I can't see any reason to pay the same or even close for the 970.

970 would have to cost a bit less to be better than 480. Newer arch on top of GCN already being better in dx12. Why would anyone go that route now? Backwards move. A 970 is pretty close to a 380x in dx12 iirc. And a 390 beats a 980. if a 480 matches a 390 stock, its easily better unless the 970 is significantly less in cost.

Lol, a stock 480 matching a 20% OC 970 is called "both are barely playable". Not only that, the Witcher 3 1080p comparison vid shows CPU utilization is far lower with the 480.

Can he be even more obvious in his blatant NV goalpost shifting antics?

Can actually now get some of the custom 970's for less than the reference 480's in the UK. Not as a big gap as above mind, but it would be a distinctly hard choice until the 970 stock is gone.

Down to the UK exchange rate vs the dollar going awful of course. Not just because they're new cards so being purchased more expensively, but the discount they're getting to help clear old stock is being paid in dollars so it takes more off.....

Listed for 270 here in NL. Cheapest 970 is 275.

480 has 8GB, performs a bit better, similar power use. I'd go for the 480.
