Get the GTX 1060 on July 7th

Earlier today I made a joke about how AMD stock should be down 20% today. If the 1060 was actually launching on July 7th, I think AMD stock really would be down 20%. If not 40%. The 480 only just barely beats a 970. There is no way it holds up against even the simplest die shrink of a 970.

If you don't mind heat and stuttering along with frame drops in game go with the 480. See the reviews that ran GTV5.

It would obviously be very silly to buy a new 970 right now, not just because of the 1060 but because it's a 2 year old card and the used market is filled with last gen cards for less money. It'll get even better after 1060 comes out, just go to ebay and take your pick. Alternatively you could get a 290X or a 390 for about the same money, there's loads of choice at that level of performance or a bit faster.

Maybe, but the 970 is a higher tier of card. If you happen to pick one up near the same price its only because they are on closeout to make room for the newer cards.

I would not get the 970. If you dont like the 480 i'd wait for the 1060, but in either case I wouldnt get a 970

It seems unlikely that the 970 is 220 euro VAT included. Even in countries with a low VAT, wouldn't that be US$200 or less before tax?

USD is strong but not that strong. It's around $250 which I don't think can be beat.

problem I'm seeing for the 970 is if it starts hitting problems like this more often

In Norway the current price situation is this (listed cheapest modell from each) :

Asus GeForce GTX 970 Strix DirectCU II OC HDMI DP 2xDVI 4GB / 299.81 US Dollar

Sapphire Radeon RX 480 HDMI 3xDP 8GB / 334.73 US Dollar

And with AMD killing motherboards cause they OC'ed the card to far with a 6 pin power connector it's kind of a no brainer

Yeaa you just buy a 970 then. Lol
Seriously the 970 is tanking in dx12. And what games is comming next year?
Buying 970 is crazy shortsighted.

which motherboards are confirmed killed by 480? so far i see 2 reports. one with 3 x 480s mining on a lower end board and the problem seems to have been the PSU cable not being able to handle 3 x 75W.

second is inconclusive.

He damaged his slot previously since he talks of a single contact being damaged :

My old 750Ti DID have a 6 pin connector. It was not reference. My overall system draw, measured at the wall via a Cyberpower UPS never exceeded 295w while gaming. Max draw when running something like Folding@Home using max CPU and GPU, however, did hit 380w. This is not something I normally do and I only did it to test max draw moments ago.
So he molested his MB with an Nvdia card, likely damaged a contact or two and is now putting the blame on AMD, as there s no way a few extra watts will cause such a damage..

Indeed his case has made the turn of all the net, i suggest to read better rather than serving one more time what is obvious FUD.

In respect of the 480 UVD it s even total non sense, the 970 is totaly obsolete in its price range at least.

470 with the TBP of 110W or so, and 460 with even lower consumption will also be there for the truly marginal SMPS owners. However, that's AMD, and we know how some here will rather recommend buying a GTX960/ 970 than 290/ 390 So is it a surprise that they recommend 970 over RX480? When 1060 comes, and perhaps at ridiculous prices as 960 originally was, such behaviour would repeat.

That said, what was in favour of 960 was if you were making a HTPC, it was the only HDMI 2.0 card, which was HDCP 2.2 compliant iirc. Now though, it's going to be a toss, and i doubt that Nvidia will price 1060 under $250 for 3gb version and $300 for 6gb one. There's no other Nvidia card till $400 or so, and given how some people here seem in a hurry to give Nvidia their money, it makes sense for Nvidia to keep prices high till GP102/ GP100 arrive on the scene. Then we would possibly see some price adjustment for 1060/1070/1080.

We ll see, what is sure is that in terms of market share here in Europe the 140-190€ segment is the most important, so the 460 and the 470 particularly are extremely important for AMD even more than the 480 wich is still too hefty for the majority of the PC gamers.

Retrospectively they were right to start with this segment, besides the fact that the 470 will launch quite later is an indication that waffers yields are healthy, otherwise they would have started with this one as well...

Are you seriously advocating for a 4gb 970 over an 8gb 480?

Wait for the 1060 or aftermarket 480

Getting a reference 480 is is probably the worse buy in history, not only runs hot and noisy as hell but it's another AMD failure that you can't even trust your motherboard with it (let's face it, whoever buy a rx 480 won't use it in a shinny new motherboard that can hold the extra power)

There's some desperate deflection going on in that thread. From scrutinizing everything but the burned PCI-E slot to blaming him for gaming for 7 hours straight.

Did you even look at it? I'll bet PayPal money that it's made up.

from the reviews the 480 reference is pretty average when it comes to fan noise and temperature it seems, and in terms of overall power draw it's around the 970 level (which was still praised as highly efficient like 2 months ago) the problems is not that, the problem is using to much power from the 12v portion of the PCIE slot, and for that reason, yes I would avoid a 480 reference, unless AMD can fix it via a driver or firmware update... in that case, the 480 4GB is GREAT perf/$ and everyone should buy one, but for now...

The heat and noise is in line with most reference cards from either manufacturer. And the whole premise that a few extra watts drawn through the pci-e than spec will blow out mobo's is BS.
